Aidan J Crowley writes all of his films and characters in the same 'universe' that contain three unusual places he calls Kloxalis, YomiKamta and Târamül and the workings of a mysterious group called the Nexcoyomeh. This universe is a alternative to Earth. The actors in The Haunting Of The Midshipman also work with Crowley on an ongoing project called The Scowling Dusk Trilogy which features these strange worlds in more detail. Each actor was given a dossier with background information and the history of this strange universe for the Scowling Dusk. The story of the Midshipman occurs primarily in the YomiKamta.
This film was influenced by a love of the sea and some personal supernatural experiences of the writer/director as well as Turner's Liber Studiorum plate25 and the murder of the 'Unknown Soldier' 1786 in Thursley/Hindhead Hill in Surrey UK.
The Director has seen a ghost at Chatham Dockyard and Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton.
Various ghostly tales and stories influenced the story including haunting of the gyroscope room on HMS Fearless, the deck of HMS Triumph, RAF Edzell, Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital, USS Halsey as well as various RN Submarines.
Some historic characters were influential to the story such as Amelia Dyer, the murder of the Unknown Sailor, Elfriede Lohse-Wächtler and the terrible fate of the Mignonette.
