Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Harley Quinn season 5, episode 1Harley Quinn season 5 might not have been talked about much before its release due to the focus on James Gunn's DC Universe, but I have to say it will likely turn heads. I'm a fan of the show and the expanded universe it has created, which now includes a Kite Man spinoff series. That kind of worldbuilding, presenting a lived-in world from the start full of established heroes and villains, is exactly what Gunn is going for with the Dcu, and Harley Quinn could teach the franchise some lessons.
Harley Quinn is a 2019 film focusing on the titular character's evolution after severing ties with the Joker. As she seeks to establish herself as an independent force in Gotham City's criminal underworld, the film explores her journey toward becoming Gotham's criminal Queenpin.

Harley Quinn Season 5 Score (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Harley Quinn returns for its fifth season on Max, continuing its unconventional take on DC’s most chaotic anti-hero. Despite DC struggling for over a decade, the unapologetic form of Dr. Harleen Quinzel has thrived, branching out three Margot Robbie movies in the DC Extended Universe and now surpassing even Batman: The Animated Series’ four-season run. Not to mention, it has also gotten a spin-off, Kite Man: Hell Yeah!
While it is devotedly followed by a strong fanbase, early reviews suggest cracks in Harley Quinn’s continued success. Once again voiced by The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco, the latest season debuted with an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes—a notable drop from its earlier highs. While 89% seems respectable, it pales compared to the show’s perfect 100% ratings for Seasons 2 and 3. Even Season 4 saw a dip to 96%, making this consecutive decline in critical reception hard to ignore.

Harley Quinn is one of the most interesting offerings DC has ever had. Clearly taking inspiration from both Margot Robbie's version of the character and DC Comics, the TV-ma animated series has no fears, exploring several different corners of the DC Universe. Following Creature Commandos season 1, those wanting another dose of bloody, hilarious adult animation with DC characters should check out Harley Quinn season 5. The new year of the TV show makes a good case for why James Gunn should keep it around for years to come as an Elseworlds project.
Developed by Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Dean Lorey, Harley Quinn is a Max original series focusing on Harley Quinn, the former therapist led astray by the Joker. The show sees Harley learn that the Joker truly doesn't love her and decides to find her place in the world without him - and cause a little mayhem along the way.

Warner Bros. Discovery just made its first move into continuing the new DC Universe. James Gunn’s adult animated series “Creature Commandos” will be returning for Season 2.
The renewal announcement was made ahead of the series’ fifth episode. Season 1’s finale will premiere on Max Jan. 9. The series follows a secret team of incarcerated monsters who are recruited for missions that are too dangerous for humans. The release change for one DC show has made me even more interested in it and the tease of its mysterious spinoff. The main DC Universe release timeline being established has confirmed a number of neat projects are on the horizon for us, with a considerable range of installments - from the Superman movie and Supergirl: The Woman Of Tomorrow film to more unexpected releases starring the likes of Swamp Thing and Booster Gold - set to debut in the upcoming years. However, there's also still a lot outside of the mainline Dcu that holds fascinating potential for DC and its future.
Indeed, with the roster of releases not centered in the main Dcu timeline becoming smaller than before, the movies and shows that still exist as part of the Dcu's Elseworlds banner - that is, releases set in another universe outside of the central Dcu one - have become all the more interesting.

The hierarchy of power in the DC universe just changed. As the Arrowverse bows out with the ending of “Superman & Lois,” its shared universe is giving way to the next attempt by DC to build a cinematic universe, this time stretching across TV and film. James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios kicks off not with a big-budget theatrical four-quadrant blockbuster, but with a gory, gnarly and irreverent animated TV show. At its core, “Creature Commandos” is essentially a sequel to Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” a story of a team of superpowered freaks treated as monsters — who are sent to a foreign country and discover that maybe the authorities should not be entirely trusted, all while becoming a found family that cares for one another because no one has cared about them before — in a project accompanied by plenty of gore, guts, swears and a killer soundtrack.

Creature Commandos might seem like an odd choice to be the first new project of James Gunn’s tenure running DC’s film and TV operations. Why kick off this post-Snyderverse era with a gory and frequently sad animated spinoff of Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, populated largely by DC Z-listers like GI Robot and Dr. Phosphorus, plus public domain characters like Frankenstein’s monster and his Bride? Why not go straight to Gunn’s Superman film, and save the quirky obscurities until after the brand has been more properly rebooted?...

American Horror Stories season 4 story "Backroom" includes a tight cast of television veterans. The horror anthology series, set within the greater universe of American Horror Story, has been largely focused on stand-alone stories that flesh out the frightening setting. This includes "Backroom," which focuses on a grieving father as he begins to disassociate with reality and find himself in a mysterious plane of existence. These "Backrooms" offer a clue to what really happened to his son Roman, a truth that Daniel doesn't realize he is actively avoiding.
This episode of American Horror Stories season 4 keeps the focus entirely on Daniel and his experiences, bringing audiences along with him into the unsettling realm of the "Backrooms." Initially mundane locations like a shopping market or an empty hallway, the true purpose of this space is steadily revealed to not be some random apparition. Here are the stars of "Backroom," and where audiences...

If you're a fan of DC Comics, the past few years have probably been pretty tough for you. A merger at Warner Bros. led to the cancellation of a slew of movies and TV shows set within their cinematic universe, and new owners at The CW also resulted in the cancellations of multiple DC TV shows that had been dominating the network for the past decade.
Yeah, it's been rough out here for DC fans. The good news is that a new DC Universe is coming from Peter Safran and James Gunn, but it's going to take some time before it comes to fruition (animated series Creature Commandos is debuting in December and Gunn's own Superman movie doesn't come out until next year). That means there will still be a prolonged period of time without much DC TV content on our screens - unthinkable this time just three years ago.

Before the formation of DC Studios, Warner Bros. brought many of its characters to television. Some like The Flash and Superman were well known to fans; others - the Doom Patrol and Human Target, for example - were not.
The plan moving forward is for the vast majority of live-action projects to take place in the Dcu, meaning we're likely to see fewer comic book heroes and villains on-screen.
In a recent interview with The Direct, Dean Lorey, the creator of animated TV shows Harley Quinn and Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, revealed that he briefly worked on a Hitman TV series for Syfy based on the little-known but still popular character.
Kite Man: Hell Yeah! has featured appearances from several characters tied to Hitman's world, something which now makes a lot more sense.
"Because we established the bar Noonan's, that sort of naturally led to some Hitman characters," he told the site.

After the “Harley Quinn” animated TV show proved to be such a success that it survived two streaming services, it got the classic sitcom treatment of having popular characters get their own spin-off series. That’s how we got “Kite Man: Hell Yeah!” an animated sitcom in the vein of “Cheers” starring the titular powerless villain buying a bar with his girlfriend, Golden Glider.
After a season of common, everyday issues like moving in together, managing a business, and finding a time-traveling toilet in your apartment, the season finale paid off the big serialized storyline of the season — the hunt for the Anti-Life Equation, which was hidden at Noonan’s Bar by Lex Luthor. Kite Man and Golden Glider realize that this formula gives the holder control over the minds of sentient beings, and in the finale, they come up with a brilliant plan to pull an “Exorcist” and have...

After watching a range of Bane's misadventures in Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, I still can't decide if I love or hate the DC show's version of the character. Bane has a unique place in Batman's rogues gallery, being well-known to broad audiences, but with relatively little adaptation onto the big or small screens. With Bane's Knightfall story being one of my first "big" comic reads, and The Dark Knight Rises releasing as my love of superheroes began to truly blossom, I've always had a soft spot for Bane that has made his comparative lack of adaptations feel like a true shame.
As such, Bane becoming a quasi-main character in Kite Man: Hell Yeah is something of a relief, as the DC animated show features the character in a capacity that is really above any series prior. However, this makes its distinct depiction of Bane all the more crucial, and makes...

After the first three episodes of “Kite Man: Hell Yeah!” focused on the acquisition of the bar Noonan’s and Kite Man and Golden Glider’s relationship, the fourth episode of this “Harley Quinn” spin-off takes a bit of a turn. After helping the couple move in together, Bane uses their new bathroom — and finds himself back in the ’80s, accidentally (or very much willingly) changing the future. That’s right, it’s a time-traveling superhero episode, but instead of a hot tub or a DeLorean, it’s a toilet that lets you go back in time.

Lately, in between reviews of swanky limited series and dramas desperate to be “Game of Thrones,” I’ve been using my non-work-related TV time re-watching “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” What a comfort. What a joy. What an escape. The weary modern world is filled with I.P.-driven franchise extensions and comedies that aren’t really comedies, whereas Moore’s iconic ’70s sitcom gets laughs every other sentence from its simple setting in snowy Minnesota. Credit to the phenomenal cast (somehow Ted Knight and Ed Asner’s five Emmy wins in six years weren’t enough), the smartly designed, blessedly humble studio apartment (her new digs in Season 6 are more offensive than the episode where Murray professes his love for Mary), and good jokes elevated by a precise understanding of their punchlines. I can’t tell you how often I’ve burst out laughing because of a clever twist on the expected kicker,...

Whether it’s DC’s animated comedy “Harley Quinn” or its spinoff series, “Kite Man: Hell Yeah!,” vulgar language and bloody violence are center stage for every episode. Katie Rich, a writer and executive producer on both, relishes that the shows’ villainous protagonists allow her and her team to crank up the “naughtiness” a few notches.
“Because they are bad people… the dirtiness and the funness is organic,” said Rich. “We are not forcing it to be an adult comedy, this is really who these people are.”

It’s important to note that these scores might change as more reviews come in, considering only three episodes have aired so far and the viewership is still limited.

Harley Quinn stars Lake Bell and James Adomian are costarring again in HBO Max’s Kite Man: Hell Yeah! spinoff and they have one special wish for their characters. No, not for Poison Ivy and Bane, but for the other characters they also voice in the show.

Oftentimes, actors lend their vocals to more than one character when needed, but in this particular setting, Bell and Adomian want to bring the spotlight to two side characters. The catch is that they do it in the raunchiest way.

Kite Man delivers a poignant critique of Lex Luthor's obsession with Superman in the opening of his show. The series offers a fresh take on the DC Universe, focusing on an unconventional character. Luthor's fixation on Superman blinds him to other opportunities and genuine connections, as highlighted by Kite Man.
In the very first episode of Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, the eponymous, often ridiculed villain delivers a surprisingly astute critique of one of DCs most formidable villains: Lex Luthor. Despite his comedic and ineffectual persona, Kite Mans observation strikes at the heart of Luthor's character. The bold indictment from one of DCs weakest supervillains is as unexpected as it is accurate, shedding light on the character flaws that have long defined Luthor in DC Comics and the Dcu timeline.

Kite Man: Hell Yeah! brings back Zack Snyder's original Dceu plan through Anti-Life Equation, reprising a cut story arc. The Anti-Life Equation, a powerful DC force, is hidden in Kite Man's bar, setting up a cosmic conflict with Darkseid. Kite Man's possession of the Anti-Life Equation adds humor and stakes, showcasing unlikely character development and absurdity.
Kite Man: Hell Yeah! has become an unlikely conduit to actualize Zack Snyder's original plan for the Dceu, which was unfortunately disregarded before it could be fully realized. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and last year's SAG-AFTRA strike, San Diego Comic-Con is finally set to host its first regular convention in five years this weekend.
“I’m cautiously optimistic,” says chief communications and strategy officer David Glanzer (via Variety). “We’ve learned to always expect the unexpected but, in the end, try to produce the type of show we want to attend. I think it will be a really good show. Finally, we’ll be back to normal.”
“It’s been a challenge,” he adds. “We knew that if there was ever some kind of a catastrophic event, we would be able to withstand a year without conventions. We never thought that it would last more than one year.”

Harley Quinn’s new spinoff show Kite Man: Hell Yeah! is here, and with it comes plenty of connections to the original series and even a surprising recast.
The show follows the lovable idiot, Kite Man, voiced by Matt Oberg, who fans knew in Harley Quinn as Poison Ivy’s fiancé. That is until she left him at the altar so she could be with Harley.
While life has not been so great for Kite Man, he now has his own show. So, things could be worse for the down-on-his-luck villain—perhaps his series has some fun surprises for him.

Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, the spinoff of the animated Harley Quinn series, turns the focus to another ragtag group of villains. Kite Man was a great character in Harley Quinn, always delivering comedic moments and even some genuinely heartfelt ones. Amazon’s popular superhero series “The Boys” has always been a thinly veiled allegory for right-wing politics, but it’s never been as unfortunately timely as it is now. The game-changing Season 4 finale, which is currently streaming on Prime Video, features an assassination attempt on the life of a U.S. president just a few days after a similarly violent incident occurred in the real world. It’s an unbelievable coincidence, and you can choose to watch the episode or not based on this information (Amazon has also added a viewer discretion warning to the beginning of the episode), but the dramatic hour sets up the Emmy-nominated drama for what is sure to be an epic final season. From gruesome deaths to emotional declarations to the unexpected final moments that will leave fans wondering how our ragtag group of heroes can possibly escape what’s coming next, “The Boys” is...

When Harley Quinn’s Poison Ivy (voice of Lake Bell) finally ended up partnered in both supervillainy and love with the titular Harley (Kaley Cuoco), fans rejoiced. Showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker promised the couple will never break up. Harley and Ivy started their fourth season last summer as current TV’s longest-running queer couple. There was, however, one person their new love left behind: Ivy’s former fiancé Chuck Brown, better known as Kite Man. In fact, Ivy might have never been brave enough to pursue a life with Harley without Kite Man’s intervention. He was the only one at his wedding willing to acknowledge that Ivy didn’t actually love him and, during their vows, answered the officiant’s prompt with a “Hell… no.”

The Best Superhero Series to Binge this Summer and Where to Watch Them - Main Image
Marvel Studios and DC may be slowing down in their theatrically released projects, but that just means there’s more room for television-focused projects.
Summer has had some great series so far, and while some have wrapped their season, there is still a load of other comic book adaptations on their way to the small screen.
X-Men ’97
June was buzzing as Disney+ had brought back the classic version of the X-Men from the 90s. Picking up from where the original series left off, Beau DeMayo’s take on the Children of the Atom finds the X-Men picking up the pieces after the death of Professor Xavier; that sounds complicated enough as it is, but they’re suddenly faced with having to have the team be run by their oldest nemesis Magneto.

Chuck Brown, better known as Kite Man, has never been one of DC’s headliners. In the comic books, hedwells in the shadows of Batman’s rogues gallery, his green suit and skyward scheme earning little more than eyerolls. Things looked up when the animated series Harley Quinn featured him in a funny arc as Poison Ivy’s reluctant beau. But could Kite Man finally take flight as his own show’s lead?
Spinning off from Harley Quinn’s satirical success, Kite Man: Hell Yeah! centers on Chuck and his gal pal Golden Glider running Noonan’s, a dive bar frequented by Gotham’s fallen foes. Sounds like setup for situational hijinks galore amongst the henchmen and baddies. Yet where Harley Quinn excels at peeling back layers on its beloved characters, this show struggles to flesh out its own.

Kite Man: Hell Yeah! is a spin-off of the adult animated series Harley Quinn, the last remaining vestige of the former DC Universe streaming service. Although one might wonder if we really need a series with a D-rate supervillain without any powers as its protagonist, this show answers with a resounding yes.
If you were to describe Kite Man: Hell Yeah! in a high-concept sense, it’s basically adult animated Cheers with supervillains. It’s a cute little concept that will satiate avid comic book fans and more casual viewers alike. It’s a good rotating balance of obscure characters and massive players in the DC canon, allowing the show to feel like it has stakes and relevance without feeling like one has to have seen and read every piece of DC media to understand what’s going on.

Kite-Man's reinvention is a tribute to Frank Miller, Daredevil, and Stilt-Man. Kite-Man's character was humanized by writer Tom King to evoke emotional responses. Both Kite-Man: Hell Yeah! and Daredevil: Born Again have ties to Frank Miller's Daredevil.
Fans may not know it, but the beloved character Kite-Man has an odd connection to the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again television series. Kite-Man has broken through and is about to receive a television adaptation of his own with the animated series Kite-Man: Hell Yeah!. The writer responsible for revitalizing the C-list villain had a few things to say about Kite-Man's connection to the Man Without Fear.
In a 2017 interview with Cbr, then-Batman writer Tom King discussed his run on the series, including his reinvention of Kite-Man, a featured character in the "War of Jokes and Riddles" arc. King revealed that his inclusion of Kite-Man was "a tribute to Frank Miller" and Daredevil as well as Stilt-Man.

Bane's animated portrayals in Harley Quinn and Kite Man: Hell Yeah! offer a humorous yet powerful and intelligent version of the character. Bane's emotional reactions and unpredictability make him a formidable villain, showcasing his flexibility and ability to work with other villains. Previous versions of the character in live-action movies have struggled to capture Bane's true essence.
While recent Batman movies are frequently praised for their darker tones and their grounded villains, one character has always been incredibly difficult to get right, but Kite Man: Hell Yeah! could change that. The Dcu is set to introduce a new Batman set within their shared universe, but The Dark Knight and his Rogues Gallery have been adapted many times over the years. While there has been a degree of success with various adaptations of most of the villains from the Batman comics, there are a few who have proven more difficult to bring to the big screen.
