This film isn&#39;t breaking any new ground in terms of the usual sport film you see maybe besides the lead been a Lesbian Ice Hockey player. It does the same old beats of any sports film you seen before with a male character in it . But it&#39;s got heart to it and performance from Alina Schaller as Mira is really good. Judith Altenberger as her new team mate and rival turned lover is charming in the little she&#39;s given to do. To be fair the performances across the board are good. The film is well shot and is workman like. I like that Mira isn&#39;t struggling with her sexuality in the film, in the first 5 minutes of the film. She meets a older woman on a dating app and has a one night stand with her. To be fair even the love story between Mira and Theresa doesn&#39;t get a ton of time in the film, It&#39;s mostly kept to last part of the film and they have a nice sex scene and they end up together at the end at least until Theresa goes off for her try out in America for hockey. This is far more about Mira&#39;s family life with her overworked mother, Grandfather with dementia and her flaky party animal brother. With Mira carrying all weight on her shoulder&#39;s with the family wine business. That gets most of the films running time along with the ice hockey stuff. But I would definitely recommend this film, the performances are good and at 1hr 42 minutes the film doesn&#39;t outstay it&#39;s welcome. Could have done with more of the love story with Mira/Theresa but that&#39;s a minor complaint.

Breaking the Ice

Breaking the Ice (2022) is an Austrian film written and directed by Clara Stern. It&#39;s a film outwardly about Austrian women&#39;s hockey, but really about interpersonal relationships. The movie stars Alina Schaller as Mira, the captain of the team. She&#39;s torn between working at her family&#39;s vineyard, caring for her grandfather who has dementia, and, of course, hockey. A new player joins the team, and that&#39;s the basis of the plot. We saw this movie as part of Rochester&#39;s excellent ImageOut LGBTQ Film Festival. I enjoyed the movie, and recommend it. Breaking the Ice has a high IMDb rating of 7.9. I agreed with the other raters, and rated it 8.
