In terms of modern filmmaking, it's hard to do better than Christopher Nolan. Even dating back to his early works such as "The Prestige" and "Memento," it was clear that this man was something special. Everyone is going to have their favorites and yes, to an extent, film is a subjective medium. That said, Nolan's broad critical acclaim coupled with his ability to deliver a commercial hit makes him unrivaled in the 2000s. Rather quantifiably, he has proven himself to be the most consistently bankable director working in Hollywood today, and one pretty eye-popping stat proves it.
Nolan had a run from 2008 to 2017 that was, in a word, ridiculous. That run includes the $1 billion beloved blockbuster smash "The Dark Knight," his mind-bending thriller "Inception," DC's one-time highest-grossing movie ever "The Dark Knight Rises," the ambitious modern sci-fi classic "Interstellar," and...

A Dwayne Johnsonaction movie that grossed $428 million is getting a new streaming home. Decades after making his WWE debut, Johnson is now one of the most recognizable movie stars on the planet. Following his jump to acting, Johnson appeared in a number of action movies, like The Rundown (2003), Faster (2010), Fast Five (2011), Snitch (2013), and Pain & Gain (2013). More recently, Johnson has embraced more family-friendly fare, but that doesn't mean he's left his action roots behind.
The mid and late 2010s saw the release of a handful of classic Johnson action movies, but the budgets got larger and they became action blockbusters instead of genre movies in the mid-budget space, reflecting the actor's growing star power. In addition to several Fast & Furious movies, Johnson starred in San Andreas in 2015 before going on to have a big year in 2018, starring in two buzzy titles. One of these titles was Skyscraper, which was ultimately a disappointment,...

The 2017 Baywatch cast features a mix of world-famous movie stars and promising newcomers at the time, and they've all followed up with some huge projects. Baywatch marked a major cinematic reboot of the classic television series that dominated screens in the 1990s. The film infused the original's campy charm with a modern twist. It not only aimed to capture the essence of the beloved series but also sought to broaden its appeal to a new generation. With its mix of action, comedy, and a hint of nostalgia, Baywatch offered a fresh take on the iconic show.
A significant aspect of the reboot's appeal lay in its star-studded cast. The film featured a mix of established and rising actors, each bringing their unique flair to the characters. This casting decision was pivotal in reimagining the series for a contemporary audience, and while it is considered one of the worst movies based on TV shows,...

Mark Wahlberg has shown that he is actually more than willing to go to unexpected heights for his roles, just to deliver what the story requires of him. His dedication and commitment toward the same is nothing short of commendable, considering how the master bodybuilder once didn’t hesitate to double down on proteins and food items to bulk his muscles.

While, in today’s day and age in Hollywood, Wahlberg is easily one of the most fit and physically active actors in the entire entertainment industry, there was a time when he used to wake up in the middle of the night just to start gorging food like a madman. This he did for the sake of his character in his $86 million commercial hit that failed to appease most critics.

Even though professional wrestling involves a degree of acting, the professional wrestler-to-actor pipeline hasn't been particularly smooth for most. Hulk Hogan generally found himself unable to tone down the volume and the bluster of yelling to an entire arena, and while Roddy Piper had some success with John Carpenter's "They Live," he owes it to the director being a wrestling fan.
In the '90s, wrestling began to change into its "Attitude" era, often called the Monday Night Wars, developing more adult and reality-based themes, and depending at least as much on behind-the-scenes vignettes as in-ring action. This transition required a newer, more versatile sort of performer, and none excelled at it more than Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock. It was in The Rock's charisma as both hero and villain that promoter Vince McMahon saw the potential for the World Wrestling Entertainment to gain a foothold in Hollywood, and WWE Studios,...

You’ve probably heard the story behind the name of “Seven Bucks Productions”, and even if you haven’t, it’s a good one. After injury derailed his NFL chances, and he failed to latch on in the Cfl, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, with not much else besides the $7 in his pocket. He returned home where, despite his father’s storied wrestling career, there was little more on offer than his loving family. Dwayne’s father reluctantly taught him the family trade, and while there was a period of wrestling shows for $40 a night, his meteoric ascendency in the world of pro wrestling as “The Rock” is nigh unparalleled.
Though he maintains tremendous gratitude and deference toward the art of pro wrestling, Dwayne Johnson has never been one to limit himself to doing just one thing, and he parlayed the fame he gained from that platform into featured roles on television,...

Dwayne Johnson is one of the biggest, most bankable powerhouses Hollywood has to offer. He went from dominating the wrestling ring to becoming a superstar overnight but let’s be honest – the man needs more diversity in his portfolio. Sure, he has the face of a typical action hero but Dwayne Johnson can be so much more if given the chance. His upcoming films are good examples of that.

Have you heard of "the butterfly effect?" No, not the 2004 Ashton Kutcher vehicle, but the principle associated with figures as various as meteorologist Edward Norton Lorenz and sci-fi author Ray Bradbury, all about how the slightest change in conditions can result in widespread changes over a period of time. History is full of such examples, where instead of obvious life changing events there exist small moments (or a series of moments) that change the futures of multiple people. As with most things regarding history, these cruxes can only be identified in hindsight, and sometimes they turn out to be surprisingly unlikely.
For example: who would've ever thought that the 2020 Netflix action film "Extraction" would have been such a turning point for the careers of the Russo brothers, Dwayne Johnson, and its star, Chris Hemsworth? For starters, "Extraction" itself was originally going to be a very different film: when first put together,...

There are few actors with as many ups and downs as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The actor, wrestler, and lifestyle guru earned his celebrity through hard work. However, Dwayne Johnson’s track record has been spotty. One moment, he reached a new career high, especially during his “Franchise Viagra” era. However, the next moment, he misses with a big budget franchise tentpole film.
A common complaint against Johnson has been his insistence to appear in movies where he plays himself. Unfortunately, his 2024 ends with Red One and Moana 2, which seem to fall in that camp. With the bad reviews of Red One dominating most of the coverage, we want to focus on his better movies. Below are five of his best.

Red One has quite the star-studded cast sliding onto Santa's sleigh this November. Like many Christmas comedies before it, Santa is a central character in Red One. This time, he's kidnapped right before his one big job of delivering presents around the world. It's up to some major action stars, Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, to save Santa and, ultimately, Christmas.
The cast is quite a good one, with resident movie and TV mom and dad Bonnie Hunt and J.K. Simmons taking on the titular roles of Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Kiernan Shipka has a more magical role as an evil snow witch who preys on naughty children, while Lucy Liu keeps Johnson and Evan's characters in line as they race against the clock to rescue Jolly St. Nick.

Although Red One does look like it will be a box office disaster, this will not stop Dwayne Johnson from having an incredible career revival in the next few years. For a while, it seemed as if Dwayne Johnson could do no wrong at the box office. The Jumanji movies earned $962.5 million and $801 million in 2017 and 2019, resurrecting a nostalgic 90s franchise and turning it into a blockbuster series. A few years earlier, The Rocks role in the Fast and Furious franchise saw its box office jump by hundreds of millions of dollars with each new movie,

Dwayne Johnson's $177 million box office disappointment lands on Netflix's global chart seven years later. Dwayne Johnson's best performance was in the dark comedy Pain & Gain, showcasing his comedic abilities in absurd situations under Michael Bay's direction. Johnson's comedic talents have been wasted in recent films like Jungle Cruise and Red Notice, lacking the humor found in Pain & Gain. While Johnson may not be a great actor like Marlon Brando, his dedication to comedic bits shines in Pain & Gain, proving his ability in the right role.
More than a decade later, Dwayne Johnsons darkly comedic turn in the action-packed Michael Bay satire Pain & Gain is still my favorite performance by the iconic wrestler-turned-actor. While Johnson is renowned for his charismatic screen presence and undeniable star power, hes not known for being a particularly great actor. Dwayne Johnson's new movie The Smashing Machine fixes the criticism of his repetitive roles. Johnson's transformation into Mma legend Mark Kerr is a departure from his recent action-packed blockbusters. The gritty biopic promises to showcase Johnson's acting talent and humanize a troubled character.
While Dwayne Johnson looks unrecognizable in his new A24 movie The Smashing Machine, this proves that the star is finally addressing the oldest criticism about his choice of movie roles. Stan Lee’s favorite DC character could find a place in James Gunn’s Dcu if one director were to helm the film. In the earlier Dceu, reports suggested that Michael Bay was attached to direct a movie featuring the character Lobo. The Transformers director has a knack for creating movies that gamble with absurd characters and produce amazing results. He might be the right fit to handle this character of an intergalactic bounty hunter.
The character of Lobo could still get a solo project in James Gunn’s Dcu
Interestingly, Jason Momoa pitched a solo Lobo film to Gunn during the promotion for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Momoa became a fan of the minor Superman villain of the ’80s who became popular in the ’90s as a parody of grim and gritty characters who defined comics in that decade.

After garnering visceral reactions from the Sundance crowd in January, Kristen Stewart’s Love Lies Bleeding has opened to a whopping 91%, becoming her second highest-rated film in the Tomatometer. Announced back in 2022, the Twilight Star joined forces with Saint Maud director Rose Glass for her first collaboration with A24.
And while fans are thrilled by it, following Glass’ work on the acclaimed horror Saint Maud, her only feature film prior to this one, it’s reasonable to see why this might not be for everyone.

Great actors struggle with subpar material, changes in the industry, personal challenges, and collaboration dynamics, impacting their ability to make good movies. Navigating the complexities of the film industry requires talent, strategic decision-making, and perseverance for actors to consistently deliver quality performances. Even if actors haven't made good movies lately, their past roles serve as a reminder that they have the potential for greatness on the big screen.
Great actors who haven't made a good movie in years may face various factors contributing to this phenomenon. Firstly, script selection plays a pivotal role - even the most talented actors struggle with subpar material. Secondly, shifts in the film industry landscape, such as changes in audience preferences or market trends, can affect the types of roles available to established actors. Furthermore, personal choices or external circumstances - like prioritizing other projects or dealing with personal challenges - can impact an actor's career trajectory.

Mark Wahlberg’s sci-fi action series Transformers wasn’t as adult-oriented as some of his other films. Still, the actor had second thoughts about exposing Wahlberg to the films in their formative years.
Why Mark Wahlberg didn’t want his kids watching ‘Transformers’ Mark Wahlberg | Fred Duval/FilmMagic
Wahlberg picked up where Labeouf left off with the Transformers franchise. The actor led the series in the commercially successful Transformers Age of Extinction, and also in its sequel The Last Knight. In an interview with CBS, Wahlberg asserted that the movie brought him back to his childhood years.
“It’s as much fun as you can ever imagine,” Wahlberg said. “Anybody who’s ever been a kid, playing with big things, this is exactly what it’s like. Blowing things up, shooting guns…It’s amazing.”

Mark Wahlberg and Michael Bay have collaborated for a couple of projects such as the Transformers movies. But as much as the two got along, Wahlberg confided Bay put him in a pretty weird position for one of his movies.

Some people might think of Transformers when picturing Bay and Wahlberg working together. But their collaboration wasn’t just limited to the popular sci-fi franchise. Wahlberg also worked with Bay on the 2013 feature Pain and Gain. There, he played a real-life bodybuilder who committed several crimes to get rich fast.
Wahlberg shared that he was interested in the movie as soon as he read its script, especially since he was into weightlifting himself.
“I thought the story was fascinating. I’ve had this fascination with body building from a very young age.

Whenever you see a film that opens with the words “based on real events”, you can be sure of two things. One, you’re going to have a good time. Two, that this film will probably contain about as much factual material as I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! contains butter.
But we don’t care!
We’re not just talking about biopics or historical films here, we’re talking about crime movies like Pain & Gain, Catch Me If You Can, romances like It Could Happen to You, and crime romances like I Love You Phillip Morris. And of course the horror genre absolutely loves a “Based On A True Story” title card and poster slogan. The Amityville Horror, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and all The Conjuring movies have one (making the last the first ever Based On A True Cinematic Universe).

Michael Bay was a decade into his film directing career when Steven Spielberg and "Transformers" beckoned. He'd established himself as a maestro of mayhem — or, as we call it now, "Bayhem." He made the $19 million budgeted "Bad Boys" look like a $75 million action extravaganza, and the $75 million budgeted "The Rock" look like one of the most expensive action movies ever made. Had Bay arrived on the scene in the 1980s, he would've been making high-style, ultra-violent shoot-em-ups with Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Unfortunately, at the turn of the millennium, four-quadrant tentpole blockbusters were all the rage, which meant Bay had to stifle his R-rated urges and deliver PG-13 spectacle for maximum worldwide grosses. He delivered with "Armageddon," and, to a lesser degree, the distressingly bloodless "Pearl Harbor," which gave him carte blanche to make one of the most morally reprehensible (yet spectacularly entertaining) studio action movies of all time...

The actual plot of Michael Bay's 2009 sci-fi actioner "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is rather oblique. In 17,000 Bce, Transformers used specialized, high-tech, sun-killing solar collectors to gather energy from the galaxy's stars. Their ethical code forbid them from snuffing out stars in solar systems that supported life, but one Transformer defied said ethic to deplete Earth's sun. That Transformer was excommunicated and became the first Decepticon. Fast forward to 2009, and the modern-day Decepticons are intent on activating the ancient solar collector once again. It's hidden inside one of the Pyramids of Giza.
"Revenge of the Fallen" was filmed in several locations in the United States, including Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and remote places in New Mexico, and Arizona. The Pyramid sequences were indeed filmed in Cairo, and the footage of ancient Egyptian cities was filmed in Petra, Jordan. Many filmgoers might recognize Petra from the climax of the 1989 film "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,...

The Twisted Metal video game franchise is being adapted into a TV series by Peacock, and the news so far including cast updates, story teases, and especially the trailer has created no small amount of interest (even outside those who've played the games). The Twisted Metal video game series began in 1995 and is known for its vehicular gameplay, chaotic environments, and bizarre characters. The main character is Sweet Tooth the Clown, who hosts a tournament where opponents take part in destructive battles to the death using customized armored vehicles. Between the colorful characters, the dark humor, and the violence, Twisted Metal is almost like a mechanical Mortal Kombat.
While Twisted Metal isn't the first video game IP that comes to mind that could make for a great TV series, it has the potential to show that even traditionally multiplayer-focused games with a limited story still can be made into solid shows.

Cult indie icons Deeper have announced their new album Careful!, out September 8th, with its lead single “Build a Bridge” streaming now. Along with the news, the band have revealed their 2023 tour dates.
Careful! marks Deeper’s third album overall and their debut for Sub Pop: “I wanted these to be interesting songs, but in a way where a two-year-old would vibe out to it,” the band’s Nic Gohl said in a statement, naming “coked-out Bowie” as a major influence. “It’s pop music, basically… We’ve always talked about how we didn’t want to stay in one genre as a band.”
Pop melodies drive “Build a Bridge,” but they’re undercut with Deeper’s classic pointed, jittery guitars that make the track at once catchy and a little unnerving. Its lyrics reckon with finding — while, perhaps, also losing — yourself: “A troubled life/ I saw the mirror/ Is this really what you need?...

Johnson first rose to prominence as a wrestler in the WWE under the ring name “The Rock,” but it wasn’t long before he brought his charisma and star power to the big screen, becoming one of the best wrestlers turned actors. The Rock is one of the last remaining movie stars who can attract audiences to a film based on his involvement alone. In a blockbuster landscape dominated by franchises, Johnson’s box office draw has made him a franchise unto himself.
Johnson has proven himself as both a charming action hero and a zany comedic performer. In his best movies, like The Other Guys or Pain & Gain, he plays both at the same time. The Rock has appeared in a wide range of different projects,...

Oscar and BAFTA-winning film producer David Parfitt is hoping to reunite with French producer Philippe Carcassonne following their successful collaboration on Florian Zeller’s Oscar-winning drama The Father.
Parfitt revealed his plans during a masterclass at the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra talent incubator event on Sunday.
“He [Carcassonne] is developing something really interesting based on an Israeli novel called Pain, which he commissioned as a French screenplay but they have decided they want to do it in England in English,” Parfitt clarified after the talk.
The 2019 novel by Zeruya Shalev revolves around a woman revisiting the double trauma of being caught up in a terror attack and abandonment by a lover when he comes back into her life a decade later.
Carcassonne’s partner, the actress and director Anne Fontaine, whose credits include Coco Before Chanel, is attached to direct the film, in what would be her first English-language production.

The oldest filmmakers in Hollywood were physical comics, and they can all rest easy knowing Adam Devine is upholding their tradition. The "Righteous Gemstones" star is best known for his work as a comedian, but he also loves performing his own stunts — the more dangerous the better. One stunt was so extreme that production wanted a double to step in, but Devine insisted on going through with it himself.
"The Righteous Gemstones" is far from Devine's first foray into dangerous stunt work. "Workaholics" also featured a lot of physical comedy that Devine had to commit to mind, soul, and, body. Luckily, his commitment paid off, and the series earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Stunt Coordination. "I'm very excited and happy that the Academy took notice," the series co-creator said in a 2013 interview with Join the Synergy. "It looks like I really hurt myself every time, 'cause I do. It's very painful.

If you thought the PG-13 version of "M3GAN" was mouthy, you might want to cover your ears for the unrated cut, now available on Peacock. Shortly after the surprisingly touching horror comedy hit theaters, director Gerard Johnstone and screenwriter Akela Cooper both made it known that the original script was gorier than what was shown in theaters, and teased the possibility of an unrated cut as much of the original gore was already filmed but edited out for a PG-13 release. Luckily, Blumhouse and Universal Pictures made the brilliant decision to release the gorier cut of "M3GAN" on Peacock, which is now available to stream.
There are some definite differences between the two films, some more noticeable than others, and may help make your decision whether to go with the theatrical cut or the new, unrated release. Obvious spoilers ahead, but there are the all of differences between the two versions of "M3GAN.
