The 2023 The Little Mermaid live-action remake will bring favorite characters like Ariel, Sebastion, and Flounder to life with the help of its exceptional cast. For some, this means lending their faces to the characters that audiences know and love, while others will give their voices to the various animals and sea creatures that Ariel calls her friends. Many of these, especially the adorable Flounder, have been fan favorites since the original 1989 The Little Mermaid, so it's essential that they are placed in good hands.
Every Disney princess needs an animal sidekick, and in the case of Ariel from The Little Mermaid, that is Flounder. The adorable yellow and blue flatfish was a memorable addition to the original animated version of Ariel's story, where he was voiced by child actor Jason Marin. The 1996 version of Matilda counts on the talents of various well-known actors, but is Pee-wee Herman also part of the cast of Matilda? Roald Dahl wrote a variety of stories, with many becoming classics of children’s literature, among them the 1988 novel Matilda. The popularity of Matilda has been such that it has been adapted to other media, including a two-part radio program, a stage musical, and a film adaptation of the musical. In 1996, Matilda made the jump to the big screen, with Danny DeVito as director and Mara Wilson playing the title character.
Matilda tells the story of the title character, a child prodigy who is neglected by her parents and tormented at school by the tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris). Matilda gradually realizes that she has psychokinetic abilities, and she starts to use these to deal with her abusive parents, Harry (DeVito) and Zinnia Wormwood (Rhea Perlman), and Miss Trunchbull.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.
First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.
Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

Paramount Pictures has unveiled a release date for its third Sonic the Hedgehog film, at the same time pushing back the date for its Untitled Smurfs Animated Musical. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will open wide on December 20, 2024, with the newest Smurfs pic going wide on February 14, 2025, having previously been set to unspool on the date now claimed by the former film.
While Sonic will open against James Cameron’s Avatar 3, it’s not yet clear what kind of box-office competition the new Smurfs pic has in store.
Based on the beloved video game franchise from Sega, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog franchise launched with a 2020 film of the same name, in which a small-town police officer (James Marsden) helped the titular blue hedgehog (Ben Schwartz) contend with Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), an evil genius looking to make him the subject of his experiments. A24’s acclaimed stop-motion/live-action hybrid “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” could be the wild card in the animated feature Oscar race — going up against such early favorites as Pixar’s “Turning Red,” Disney’s “Strange World,” and Netflix’s two stop-motion behemoths: “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” and Henry Selick’s “Wendell & Wild” (the latter being the lone animated feature premiering at TIFF).
And why not? The feature debut from director Dean Fleischer Camp (adapting a series of shorts he created with “Marcel” star Jenny Slate), has been embraced by critics for its charm, wit, inventive stop-motion, and its adorable breakout star. The one-inch anthropomorphic shell (voiced by Slate) lives with his grandmother Connie (Isabella Rossellini) and develops a friendship with doc filmmaker Dean (Fleischer Camp), who moves in and films Marcel’s daily activities, which go viral. Jacob Tremblay is set to co-star alongside Peter Dinklage in Legendary’s “Toxic Avenger” film, a reboot of Troma Entertainment’s 1984 low-budget action-comedy splatter film.
The reboot will follow a mild-mannered janitor at a health club who’s pushed out of a second-story window by bullies into a vat of toxic waste. The chemicals cause him to transform into a hideously deformed mutant gifted with superhuman size and strength. He must go from shunned outcast to underdog hero as he races to save his son, his friends and his community from the forces of corruption and greed.
The original film generated four sequels: “The Toxic Avenger Part II,” “The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie” and “Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV.” The franchise expanded into an animated children’s TV series spin-off called “Toxic Crusaders,” a musical stage production and a Marvel comic book series.

ABC has given a pilot order to a comedy written by Jimmy Kimmel, Shawn Vance and Daril Fannin.
Called “Adopted,” the trio also executive produce the single-camera project.
Here is the official logline from ABC: “When a Green Beret returns home to Texas from military service, he and his family struggle with the challenges of adopting his new brother, a 12-year-old Russian boy. Inspired by a true story.”
“Adopted” is produced by ABC Studios in association with Kimmel’s Kimmelot production banner.
The “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host has also written for Comedy Central’s “Crank Yankers,” “The Andy Milonakis Show,” “The Man Show,” “Windy City Heat,” both the Oscars and the Emmys on more than one occasion, and once for the Grammys in 2002.
Kimmel has been hosting his late-night talk show since 2003. He has also done some acting since then, including voicing the dad in “Boss Baby,” Batman in “Teen Titans Go! to the Movies,...

There’s a reason why you’ve probably never heard of Erika Rosenbaum. An attractive, intelligent, and ostensibly talented Canadian actress who stepped off the bus in Los Angeles with nothing but a dream to her name, Rosenbaum was no less prepared or deserving than any of the legendary screen idols who had inspired her to reach for the stars. Lana Turner was famously discovered at a malt shop, so why not her? Twenty years later, Rosenbaum’s most prestigious role to date is Bartocci Customer #2 in “Brooklyn.” Before that, she was Pregnant Mom in “The Smurfs 2” and Cashier in a TV movie called “Abducted: Fugitive for Love.” But while it’s true that a prayer and a pretty smile aren’t enough to guarantee a successful career in show business, there’s reason to believe that she never had a fair shot at having one.

Lotus Entertainment has unveiled the first teaser-trailer for Kirby Atkins’ “Mosley,” an animated family film from Huhu Studios in New Zealand and China Film Animation, the first co-production between the two countries.
Lotus Entertainment, which is representing “Mosley” in international markets, will be premiering the film at the European Film Market in Berlin on Feb. 7.
Lotus has already pre-sold it to Australia/New Zealand (Rialto), C.I.S. (Top Film Distribution), China (China Film Group), Czech Republic/Slovakia (Fenix Distribution), Bulgaria, Ex-Yugoslavia and Romania (Programs 4 Media Limited), Israel (Five Stars), Middle East (Eagle Films), Portugal (Nos Lusomundo), South Africa (Filmfinity) and Vietnam (Ram Indo).
“Mosley” follows the eponymous hero and his family of four-legged “Thoriphants,” intelligent creatures with the ability to speak like humans but that have been cursed to live a life of servitude. In an attempt to free his family, Mosley embarks on a perilous journey to find the mythical land of Kinesareth.

MaryAnn’s quick take… An essential history lesson with a smart smack of relevance for today (because feminism always has to be relitigated). It’s also warm, funny, and hugely entertaining. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): not a sports fan at all
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
That saying about those not remembering the past being condemned to repeat it? Of course it’s true… but sometimes it’s not an accident that the past gets forgotten. Sometimes the squashing of history — and the continuation of history into the present — is deliberate. Feminists know this: Women are constantly having to reinvent feminism, refight the same battles, because they don’t stay won. A brief moment of small triumph very quickly gets drowned out by major cultural pushback; women may savor victory only long enough...

Saturday Am Update: WB and New Line's Annabelle: Creation is off to an excellent start, bringing in an estimated $15 million on Friday (including $4 million from Thursday previews) on its way to a weekend around $35 million if not more. It's also great news for director David F. Sandberg who helmed last year's hit Lights Out for WB. That film went on to gross nearly $150 million worldwide on a budget under $5 million. The film received a "B" CinemaScore, matching the score for the first film. Open Road's The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature is performing even worse than expected, delivering an estimated $3 million on Friday. This is already shaping up to be the lowest opening for a film playing in over 4,000 theaters by a wide margin. Currently the worst opening for an opening that size belongs to The Emoji Movie with $24.5 million, but with the $9 million or so Nut Job 2 is...
