The studio that brought us the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise will tap into another nostalgic property this July with Smurfs, an animated adventure based on characters created by Belgian comic artist Peyo. Paramount shared a little trailer tease yesterday, but now smurf on over to smurf the new trailer for the animated/live-action hybrid, Smurfs.

Rihanna gives a little intro as the new voice of Smurfette, as well as contributing to the soundtrack of the movie with her cover of “Heaven is a Place on Earth,” formally by Belinda Carlise. Smurfs combines the style of the classic Saturday morning cartoons with more modern 3D animation. Smurf village is devastated when a mysterious force abducts Papa Smurf and it’s up to a small group of ragtag Smurfs to get him back.

Exclusive: Emmy winner Jb Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm) is set to produce a comedic animated series based on the video game High On Life.

The actor, who launched his production outfit Alternate Side Productions last year, hasn’t officially been cast in the development project but we hear there’s a good chance he will.

High On Life is a comedic first-person shooter game with action-adventure and Metroidvania elements. Paul Reubens, best known for playing Pee-wee Herman, has died.

He was 70 years old. It was revealed via his Instagram account that he had been battling cancer for the last six years.

"Please accept my apology for not going public with what I've been facing the last six years," Reubens shared in a posthumous message.

"I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters."

"I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you."

His estate wrote another message on the account, confirming Reubens' death.

"Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness," the statement reads.

The upcoming Smurfs movie has found its Smurfette in Rihanna. The latest film version of Peyo's The Smurfs will be the fourth overall adaptation of the source material in the U.S., after Sony Pictures Animation's The Smurfs, The Smurfs 2, and Smurfs: The Lost Village. While all three movies weren't critically well-received, they were box office hits. Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies' take on The Smurfs was announced in February 2022, hoping to launch a film franchise. However, details on the latest version of The Smurfs have been kept secret, aside from Pam Brady writing the screenplay and Puss in Boots' Chris Miller directing, with Matt Landon co-directing.

At CinemaCon, Paramount and Nickelodeon announced that Rihanna will be voicing Smurfette in the upcoming film. Rihanna was there to reveal she'll also be writing and recording original songs for the movie, alongside producing it.

Step aside Trolls: Rihanna is here to slay as a Smurf.

With Universal’s animated musical “Trolls” franchise going strong with the upcoming “Trolls Band Together,” Paramount Pictures during Thursday’s CinemaCon presentation unveiled an untitled “Smurfs” animated film starring Oscar-nominated Grammy winner Rihanna as Smurfette.

Rihanna is creating and performing original music for the film and also serving as a producer. The “Smurfs” movie will debut in theaters February 14, 2025, from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies.

Chris Miller and Matt Landon co-direct the “Smurfs” film, based on characters created by Peyo. “South Park” producer and “Team America: World Police” writer Pam Brady penned the screenplay. In addition to Rihanna, Ryan Harris, Laurence “Jay” Brown, and Tyran “Ty-Ty” Smith produce.

Roald Dahl wrote a variety of stories, with many becoming classics of children’s literature, among them the 1988 novel Matilda. The popularity of Matilda has been such that it has been adapted to other media, including a two-part radio program, a stage musical, and a film adaptation of the musical. In 1996, Matilda made the jump to the big screen, with Danny DeVito as director and Mara Wilson playing the title character.

Matilda tells the story of the title character, a child prodigy who is neglected by her parents and tormented at school by the tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris). Matilda gradually realizes that she has psychokinetic abilities, and she starts to use these to deal with her abusive parents, Harry (DeVito) and Zinnia Wormwood (Rhea Perlman), and Miss Trunchbull.

The jokes will extend well past April 1st on HBO and HBO Max.

“Barry” returns for its fourth and final season. After the shocking Season 3 finale which saw Barry (Billy Hader) getting arrested and Cousineau (Henry Winkler) being hailed as a hero, there will be plenty of consequences for both. The dark comedy premieres on April 16 with two episodes.

“A Black Lady Sketch Show” will also bring plenty of laughs when it returns for its fourth season. The sketch comedy series premieres April 14.

On the drama side, the limited series “Love and Death” premieres on April 27. It’s based on the true story of Candy (Elizabeth Olsen) and Pat Montgomery (Patrick Fugit) and Betty (Lily Rabe) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) – two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.

First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.

Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

Bill Hader returns for one final season of Barry and the popular sketch comedy A Black Lady Sketch Show kicks off its fourth season on HBO Max in April 2023. Additional highlights of the streaming service’s April lineup include the debut of Love & Death, a limited series starring Elizabeth Olsen and Patrick Fugit; season two of Somebody Somewhere with Bridget Everett; and the return of 100 Foot Wave for a second season.

In addition, the Titans mid-season premiere arrives on April 13. Summer is about to finally, blessedly be in full swing. And to honor the occasion, Hulu is showing up big with its list of new releases for June 2022.

Hulu is bringing two major TV titles to its stream this month. The first is The Orville: New Horizons on June 2. Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi/comedy started as a simple Star Trek parody on Fox before blossoming into its own entirely sincere space adventuring beast. Now “New Horizons” promises to be a fresh start for the series on Hulu. Next up is Only Murders in the Building season 2 on June 28. Season 1 of this Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-starring series was a big hit. Let’s see if our favorite podcasters can pull it off once again.

An updated press kit from Warner Bros. on the untitled film includes Ricci’s name in the all-star cast, which features Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jonathan Groff and Neil Patrick Harris, to name a few. No details were provided as to Ricci’s role in the sci-fi film, though she is known for playing characters that lean toward the unconventional. Warner Bros. declined to comment on the casting, and representatives for Ricci did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.

Jacob Tremblay is set to co-star alongside Peter Dinklage in Legendary’s “Toxic Avenger” film, a reboot of Troma Entertainment’s 1984 low-budget action-comedy splatter film.

The reboot will follow a mild-mannered janitor at a health club who’s pushed out of a second-story window by bullies into a vat of toxic waste. The chemicals cause him to transform into a hideously deformed mutant gifted with superhuman size and strength. He must go from shunned outcast to underdog hero as he races to save his son, his friends and his community from the forces of corruption and greed.

The original film generated four sequels: “The Toxic Avenger Part II,” “The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie” and “Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV.” The franchise expanded into an animated children’s TV series spin-off called “Toxic Crusaders,” a musical stage production and a Marvel comic book series.

As if September hasn’t already been filled to the brim with incredible movies and shows, Netflix is bringing even more to you today in the largest content drop since the first of the month. With a handful of documentaries, a popular children’s flick, and new seasons of some great shows, there’s something for everyone on this exciting release day.

It’s time to look ahead at what’s coming to Netflix over the next seven days and what a big week it’s set to be for the streaming giant. As well as the usual assortment of newly licensed titles being added to the site’s library, there are a number of hotly anticipated original movies and TV shows due this week as well.

While nothing new arrives on Monday, Tuesday delivers 15 fresh titles for you to consume, ranging from the latest season of British period drama Call the Midwife to 2013’s The Smurfs 2. There’s also some great documentary content, including the second seasons of both America’s Book of Secrets and The Universe.

Wednesday then sees the first major original of the week hit Netflix – psychological thriller The Devil all the Time, starring a packed cast of A-Listers including Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson and Sebastian Stan.

Netflix is out with its list of everything new coming in the month of September.

The list includes the new space series “Away” starring Hilary Swank, out Sept 4. It also includes all three “Back to the Future” movies, “Grease” and “Magic Mike,” out Sept. 1.

“The Duchess” is out Sept. 11, and Ryan Murphy’s “Ratched” comes Sept. 18.

Leaving throughout the month is “Cold Case Files: Season 1,” “Christopher Robin,” “Jurassic Park,” “Despicable Me” and “Dear John,” to name a few.

September marks the start of the traditional TV season. For many networks and cable channels, however, this will be an usual season with the coronavirus pandemic halting production leaving behind paltry fall lineups. Over on Netflix, however, things continue to operate at high capacity.

Netflix is rolling out quite a few original series and movies for its new releases in September 2020. The Hillary Swank-starring space drama Away premieres on September 4. That is followed by a whole host of intriguing concepts including Julie and the Phantoms (Sept. 10), Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (Sept. 18), and even the Nurse Ratched origin story series called Ratched (Sept. 18).

The film side of things is just as packed. Romantic comedy Love, Guaranteed premieres on Sept. 3, Charlie Kaufman’s latest effort I’m Thinking of Ending Things arrives on Sept. 4, and the Tom Holland-starring thriller The Devil All the Time bows on Sept. 16. That’s not even to mention Enola Holmes on Sept.

Take that, Gargamel: The Smurfs are getting a brand-new series at Nickelodeon, the children’s cable network announced Thursday.

The blue crew will populate The Smurfs, a CG-animated reboot that will introduce a new generation of kids to Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Clumsy, Hefty, Brainy and the rest of the the popular cartoon characters who live in mushroom-shaped homes in the forest.

The Smurfs are set to make their own tiny village on Nickelodeon, which is launching a new animated series centered on the iconic minuscule cerulean humanoids.

Nickelodeon is teaming with The Smurfs‘ worldwide licensors, Lafig Belgium and Imps, to conjure a revival CG-animated series, which is being eyed for a U.S. debut on the cable channel for sometime in 2021, after which it will premiere on Nickelodeon’s channels internationally. The series will follow all-new exploits of classic characters like Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy, Clumsy and more, brandishing themes centered on humor, heart and high-stakes action.

The Smurfs relaunch series will arrive from Peyo Productions and Dupuis Edition & Audiovisuel, under director William Renaud, who will work off scripts by writers Peter Saisselin and Amy Serafin. TNT will begin hosting “ShaqNight!” every Thursday, wherein the NBA legend and his friends join viewers in watching and commenting on some of O’Neal’s favorite films. The events lead into the upcoming TNT docuseries “Shaq Life.” TNT will celebrate each Thursday event by donating money to a charitable organization chosen by O’Neal’s guest.

Lotus Entertainment has unveiled the first teaser-trailer for Kirby Atkins’ “Mosley,” an animated family film from Huhu Studios in New Zealand and China Film Animation, the first co-production between the two countries.

Lotus Entertainment, which is representing “Mosley” in international markets, will be premiering the film at the European Film Market in Berlin on Feb. 7.
