The Smurfs team up with their human friends to rescue Smurfette, who has been abducted by Gargamel, since she knows a secret spell that can turn the evil sorcerer's newest creation, creatures called "The Naughties", into real Smurfs.

The evil wizard Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants, and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs, Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world¹s greatest sorcerer. Gargamel is back, and this time he's sending the Smurfs on a wild adventure through Paris in this globe-trotting sequel to the 2011 hit. Determined to harness the magical essence of the Smurfs, wicked wizard Gargamel (voice of Hank Azaria) creates a diminutive race of mischief makers known as the Naughties. But in order to get the results he's looking for, Gargamel will need to get his hands on a genuine Smurf. Enter Smurfette (voice of Katy Perry), the only one of her kind who knows the spell that can transform Naughties into actual Smurfs. Having recently shot to fame in Paris due to his impressive magical powers, Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette, and sweeps her away to the City of Light. With Papa Smurf (voice of Jonathan Winters) and company hot on his trail, however, the scheming wizard quickly realizes that executing his diabolical plan will be easier said than done. Meanwhile, Smurfette's growing sense of insecurity leaves her vulnerable to the scheming of Naughties Vexy (voice of Christina Ricci) and Hackus (voice of J.B. Smoove)..

After the events of The Smurfs (2011), the tiny blue creatures can't wait to throw the perfect birthday party for beautiful Smurfette. Instead, Gargamel, who lives in Paris and still bears a grudge against the Smurfs, manages to abduct blonde Smurfette with the help of his new evil Smurf-like creations, Vexy and Hackus, bent on learning Papa Smurf's secret spell. So, with time running out, Papa Smurf, Clumsy, Grouchy, and Vanity return to New York City and the bustling world of humans to seek help from their old friends, Patrick and Grace Winslow. When one of them is kidnapped by their enemy, a group of magical creatures return to the human world to team up with their friends again for a rescue mission. Things become complicated when numerous secrets from the past come out and could ruin everything.—RECB3

The Smurfs read out the story of how Smurfette was created by Gargamel in the beginning to infiltrate the Smurf's & to capture them & turn them over to Gagramel. Her naughty nature took the Smurf village by storm, and she even flooded the village. The Smurfs wanted her gone, but Papa Smurf (Jonathan Winters) saw the good in Smurfette & turned her into a good Smurf using the Smurf essence (and a generous dose of love and kindness).

Smurfette (Katy Perry) is having nightmares about betraying her fellow Smurfs and turning them over to Gargamel (Hank Azaria) after capturing them with her Dragon wand. Smurfette is now very unsure about her true identity.

Meanwhile, the Smurfs are preparing a surprise party for Smurfette's birthday, but as Smurfette tries to find out what her fellow Smurfs are planning, none of them are saying a word. She takes this to mean that everyone forgot her birthday. Smurfette is distraught and wanders off alone.

Smurfs are Clumsy (Anton Yelchin), Brainy (Fred Armisen), Gutsy (Alan Cumming), Grouchy (George Lopez), Positive (George Lopez), Vanity (John Oliver), Social (Mario Lopez), Passive Aggressive (Jimmy Kimmel), Jokey (Paul Reubens), Baker (B. J. Novak), Smooth (Shaquille O'Neal), Clueless (Shaun White), Handy (Jeff Foxworthy), Hefty (Gary Basaraba), Panicky (Adam Wylie), Farmer (Joel McCrary), Greedy (Kenan Thompson), Crazy (John Kassir) and Party Planner (Kevin Lee).

In France, Gargamel is now a celebrity in the US, amazing people with his sorcery, but he sees that he is running low on the Smurf essence that gives him his magic powers. Gargamel has an upcoming show at the famed Paris Opera House. With his new creations, evil Smurfs called Naughties Vexy (Christina Ricci) and Hackus (J. B. Smoove), Gargamel plans on opening a portal to the Smurf village by using the Eiffel tower as a conduit so that he can kidnap Smurfette and, through her, get Papa Smurf's secret formula for creating Smurfs. However, as the portal he created is not big enough for him to go through (as Gargamel ran out of Smurf essence which is needed to create a portal), Gargamel takes Vexy and sends her through to the portal to grab Smurfette and bring her to Paris.

Vexy arrives in the Smurf village & finds Smurfette alone near the portal. She claims that she escaped from her evil creator, to get Smurfette to come near her. As Smurfette gets close, Vexy grabs her and pushes her through the portal, along with herself. Vexy and Hackus need daily dose of Smurf essence to maintain their energy, but Gargamel used the last of it on the portal.

One of the Smurfs witnesses the abduction of Smurfette and informs Papa Smurf. Papa Smurf uses his magic to create crystals that would allow several of his Smurfs to travel directly to Patrick Winslow's (Neil Patrick Harris) residence in New York City in order to get his help to rescue Smurfette. Papa originally intended for Brainy, Hefty, and Gutsy to use the crystals, but instead through an accident Clumsy, Grouchy and Vanity use them. Papa and the three Smurfs arrive in the apartment right after the celebration of Blue's (Jacob Tremblay) fourth birthday where they meet both the Winslows' young boy and Patrick's stepfather Victor Doyle (Brendon Gleeson), a man who is a constant embarrassment to Patrick. The Smurfs soon discover where Gargamel is, and so they and the Winslows set off for Paris in order to find him.

After their arrival in Paris, Patrick and his wife Grace (Jayma Mays) work together with Victor to distract Gargamel during one of his performances at the Palais Garnier. During the confrontation, Gargamel accidentally turns Victor into a duck. Meanwhile, the Smurfs sneak backstage in Gargamel's dressing room to look for Smurfette, only to discover what Gargamel is planning.

At the same time, Smurfette escapes from the prison and Vexy and her partner Hackus chase after her. Vexy encourages Smurfette to be naughty for fun to get her on their side, and, in the process, the three of them truly befriend each other. Upon her return to Gargamel's hotel suite with the Naughties, Gargamel presents her with a tiny dragon wand as a feigned act of kindness, claiming that he was Smurfette's father all along and that Papa Smurf had no interest in her.

Smurfette is still reluctant to give Gargamel the formula to turn a naughty into a Smurf until she sees that the Naughties are dying due to a lack of Smurf essence. Faced without an alternative to save them, Smurfette quickly writes it down and Gargamel uses it to turn the Naughties into real Smurfs. Immediately after they become Smurfs, the evil wizard puts them into his Smurf-A-Lator so he can carry out the rest of his plan.

Meanwhile, Patrick, Victor (who is human again because thankfully, Gargamel's spell was only temporary), and the Smurfs work together to rescue Smurfette. The Smurfs are soon captured and put into the Smurfalator, powering Gargamel's "La Wanda" (a large-sized dragon wand). Patrick and Victor arrive just in time to destroy the Smurfalator, causing the naughty-to-Smurf formula to be destroyed in blue pixie dust that in turn vanquishes the secret formula and frees the Smurfs from their cages. Gargamel has gained enough power to use his new wand against the Smurfs and their allies.

Everyone is blasted out of Gargamel's lair through a sewer hole where Patrick and Victor reunite with Grace and Blue. Vexy and Hackus team up with the Smurfs against their former master and use the new wand to blast him away. He then falls onto the Notre Dame Cathedral where he accidentally brings a stone vulture to life which then throws him to the top of the Eiffel Tower where fireworks then set off, sending him in the air. Vexy and Hackus, the two new Smurfs, bid farewell to the Winslows and return home with the rest of the Smurfs.

In the middle of the credits, Gargamel and Azrael (Mr. Krinkle) are pulled into the portal, sending them back to their castle and they later have a fight.
