The feature, from Come to Daddy director Ant Timpson follows 11-year-old Mildred (Fisher) whose life takes a wild turn when her estranged father, a washed-up Las Vegas illusionist Strawn Wise (Wood) suddenly reappears. Strawn is left to care for Mildred while her mom is hospitalized and the pair set off on a trip to find the mythological Canterbury Panther.

Mister Smith closed deals on the film for Photon Films in Canada; Metropolitan in France; Plaion Pictures in Germany, Italy and Switzerland; and La Aventura in Spain, among other territories. Vertical Entertainment picked up the film for the U.S. earlier this year. Signature Entertainment will release in the U.K.

Production has begun on “Tangata Pai,” a Warner Bros. Discovery-backed drama that claims to be the first primetime series in which 30% of the dialog will be in the Maori language.

The eight-part series tells the stories of five people whose worlds collide when a bomb is detonated at a peaceful Māori protest against a license to mine a sacred site. The completed show will play on New Zealand’s Three and Three Now channels.

The series was created by writer, director and producer Kiel McNaughton who also serves as showrunner and director for the series.

Tangata Pai is produced by Kerry Warkia under the production banner Brown Sugar Apple Grunt Productions, which she founded with McNaughton. It was co-written by McNaughton, Mei-Lin Te Puea Hansen, Briar Grace Smith and Hamish Bennett.

Canada’s Wango Films has completed filming on their upcoming feature “Little Lorraine,” which marks the big-screen debut of bestselling Latin artist J Balvin, known as the “Prince of Reggaeton.”

The production, shot in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and Ontario, also stars Stephen Amell and Sean Astin.

Directed by Grammy nominee Andy Hines, the film is based on true events from the late 1980s, depicting a remote mining and fishing town’s transformation into a hub for a major cocaine smuggling operation. The cast also includes Stephen McHattie, Auden Thornton, Matt Walsh, Rhys Darby, Josh Close, Steve Lund and Sugar Lyn Beard.

The series had been filming in Thailand throughout the first half of the year, with production originally beginning last summer before being shut down due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Exclusive: Signature Entertainment has picked up UK and Irish rights to Bookworm, the latest film from Kiwi filmmaker Ant Timpson (Come to Daddy) starring Elijah Wood.

Described as an “adventure comedy”, the film is produced by Emma Slade (Come to Daddy), Roxi Bull (Uproar), and Victoria Dabbs (Malevolent) of Firefly Films New Zealand and Mette-Marie Kongsved (I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore), Laura Tunstall (Nine Days) of Nowhere.

Timpson directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Toby Harvard (The Greasy Strangler). Starring alongside Wood are Michael Smiley (Free Fire), Nell Fisher (Evil Dead Rise), Morgana O’Reilly (Housebound), and Nikki Si’ulepa (Same But Different: A True New Zealand Love Story). The film’s plot tells the story of a 12-year-old whose life is turned upside down when her estranged, washed-up American magician father comes to look after her.

The original classic is returning to theaters, for starters, and the Xenomorphs will be fighting Marvel’s superheroes in the upcoming mashup comic Aliens vs. Avengers. So what’s the latest on the “Alien” TV series?...

Exclusive: Upcoming Filipino crime drama series Sellblock has wrapped principal photography and is headed for MIPTV. You can see four first-look images above.

Slated as a three-season series, Sellblock chronicles the activities of one of Asia’s biggest drug empires operating from inside a Philippines maximum-security prison. LA’s Blue Fox Entertainment has boarded the show and will launch it at the final ever MIPTV next week in Cannes, France.

The series is produced by Manilla-based BlackOps Studios Asia, headed by Pedring Lopez, who is known for Netflix’s Maria, Darkroom and Geisha of Death and also leads Psyops8. Lopez directs all eight episodes of the first season.

Blue Fox is handling sales, including the Philippines, and will be screening the pilot episode for buyers at MIPTV as it moves into TV distribution. Filipino producer Abs-cbn was initially attached to the show, but we hear it is no longer involved.

Creator Noah Hawley‘s take on the Alien franchise has been described as both an “extension and reinvention” of the films, but don’t expect Ridley Scott’s prequel movies to factor into the series. Scott, who’s on board the FX series as producer, dug into the origins of the Xenomorphs in both Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, but Hawley reveals in a new chat with Kcrw’s The Business that he’s not interested in playing with any of those story threads.

Blue Fox has come on board to sell worldwide rights on the crime thriller What We Do Next starring Corey Stoll and will launch sales talks at EFM this week.

Stephen Belber (Match starring Patrick Stewart) wrote and directed the completed feature, which also stars Karen Pittman (The Morning Show) and Michelle Veintimilla (Gotham) and gets a US theatrical release on March 3 via Small Batch Studio Entertainment.

LA-based sales, financing and distribution company Blue Fox Entertainment has hired Kalani Dreimanis as vice president of international sales ahead of the EFM later this month.

Dreimanis arrives from Epic Pictures and will work closely with Blue Fox Entertainment founder James Huntsman, head of international Lisa Gutberlet, and head of worldwide marketing and distribution Audrey Delaney.

Global film sales agency and U.S. domestic distributor Blue Fox Entertainment has announced that production has wrapped on family comedy “Popular Theory,” starring Cheryl Hines (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), Marc Evan Jackson (“The Good Place”), Sophia Reid-Gantzert (“The Baby-Sitters Club”), Lincoln Lambert (“Nope”), and Chloe East (“The Fabelmans”).

Century City-based Blue Fox Entertainment is handling worldwide sales and will release the film theatrically in the U.S. in 2023, the company said in a statement.

“Popular Theory” is a coming-of-age comedy that plumbs the complexities of companionship and ambition.

In the film, Erwin (Reid-Gantzert) is a 12-year-old girl genius completely out of sorts as the youngest student in high school. She’s faced with only one problem she can’t solve: Social isolation.
