The Goonies are officially making a comeback.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that a sequel to the beloved 1985 adventure film is in development, with Potsy Ponciroli set to write the script. The project is moving forward nearly 40 years after the original movie first hit theaters.

Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario will be producing for Amblin Entertainment, joined by Chris Columbus, who wrote the original screenplay. Lauren Shuler Donner will serve as an executive producer. At this stage, no director has been announced, and plot details remain under wraps.

The original movie, directed by Richard Donner and produced by Spielberg, followed a group of kids who stumbled upon an ancient treasure map and embarked on a wild adventure to uncover the hidden riches.

Starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, and Martha Plimpton, the film became an instant hit, grossing $125 million worldwide on a $19 million budget.

It may sound like a boy who cried wolf scenario, but it seems "The Goonies 2" is really, truly, actually happening. No, seriously this time! This is a film that has been talked about for literal decades now, with nothing having materialized up to this point. Back to 2014, the late Richard Donner (who directed the original "Goonies") said "Goonies" co-writer and producer Steven Spielberg had written a story for the sequel. Well, now Warner Bros. is getting serious about the project and has hired a new writer to tackle another adventure with Mikey, Chunk, and the rest of the gang. Presumably.

According to Deadline, Potsy Ponciroli has officially come on board to pen "The Goonies 2." Ponciroli is known best as the writer-director of the 2021 Western "Old Henry" starring Tim Blake Nelson. Some of the filmmaker's other credits include the TV series "Still the King" and last year's crime flick "Greedy People.

Comcast-owned Sky has taken the checkered flag and will exclusively show the feature documentary Hill about Formula 1 star Damon Hill in the U.K. and Ireland under a deal with U.K. film distribution, production and sales outfit Signature Entertainment.

Signature said that it was partnering with Sky for the movie from Independent Entertainment to premiere in the two territories as a Sky Exclusive later this year.

Now, in Ritchson's upcoming movie, Motor City, he is going against type (sort of).

Taking place in 1970s Detroit, Motor City is a gritty tale of revenge that will still have plenty of action, but this time Ritchson’s character is only out for blood and revenge. A lot is riding on Superman‘s success so the teaser trailer needs to land well with fans. Based on comments on DC’s YouTube page, it seems to have hit most of the right notes.

The teaser trailer opens with Superman gasping for breath, bloody and calling for help from his trusty dog Krypto. The two-minute trailer has only a couple of lines of dialogue and instead teases us with very brief snippets of all the key characters.

Yesterday, Warner Bros. and DC Studios shared the first poster for Superman. The movie will serve as the true launching platform for the new Dcu after Max's Creature Commandos, and excitement for Thursday's trailer is rapidly rising.

In the motion poster shared on social media yesterday, we heard what appeared to be composer John Murphy's score for the reboot. Taking its cues from John Williams' work in Superman: The Movie and, to a lesser extent, Hans Zimmer's Man of Steel theme, it's received a positive response from fans.

Today, Murphy has posted a 30-second clip on YouTube in a video he's named "Theme From Superman." We don't know if this is the Man of Tomorrow's main theme, but it seems to be at least part of it (we'd imagine a full "reveal" is being saved for the trailer).

This summer the Coen Brothers’ ripoffs have been out in force including the August release of Greedy People and the Apple Original Films streaming attraction The Instigators. You might call these, and many others in recent years, Coens-light. But then again even the Coens themselves, or at least Ethan, has more recently tried to replicate their earlier success in this genre with the forgettable Drive-Away Dolls earlier this year. Lionsgate has pushed the release date for Mel Gibson’s anticipated suspense thriller Flight Risk, starring Mark Wahlberg, Topher Grace and Michelle Dockery, to 2025, the studio announced on Friday afternoon.

Two new movies just barely cracked the top 5 in one of the worst weekends of the summer with no movie making more than $19 million. Read on for the weekend box office report.

“Deadpool and Wolverine” returned to #1 with an estimated $18.3 million, down just 39% in its fifth weekend, bringing its domestic total to $577.2 million. That’s not only the second-best showing for the year after Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” but it’s also passed last year’s #2 movie, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” to become the 16th highest-grossing domestic blockbuster ever. Marvel Studios’ only 2024 release has passed $1.2 billion worldwide with another $20.2 million made overseas this weekend.

Fargo is a dark comedy crime thriller film written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. The 1996 film follows Jerry, a down-and-out sales manager in a lot of debt to some dangerous people.

Police officer Will Shelley moved to a quaint suburban neighborhood in the hopes of finding some peace to raise his son, but he would soon figure out that it was a distant dream. Directed by Potsy Ponciroli, Greedy People is precisely what the title suggests: a film about greed that often engulfs humans to the point that they lose sight of right and wrong. It was Will’s first day at the new precinct, and he already had a burst blood vessel in his eye. A red eye was not on his checklist for his first day at work, but he had no choice but to deal with it. While Will went off to work, his pregnant wife, Paige, unpacked their belongings and started painting their house. She did not expect to come across a handyman (killer-for-hire) at the paint store, and the suburban neighborhood only got more interesting for her.

In “Old Henry,” director Potsy Ponciroli spilled an inordinate amount of blood on and around the porch of a frontier homestead. “And for what? For a little bit of money,” as Fargo police chief Marge Gunderson put it after solving a no-less-senseless crime a century later. Reuniting with Coen brothers collaborator Tim Blake Nelson for his second feature, “Greedy People,” Ponciroli trades the lawless West for the well-policed present-day Northeast, setting a darkly comic cash grab in the South Carolina town of Providence.

This time around, Ponciroli is directing someone else’s script, and even though the new film feels even more Coen-esque than his first, it lacks the blunt, remorseless quality that set “Old Henry” apart. That film tipped its hat to its influences; this one seems to be borrowing the whole damn uniform. Just look at the way it begins and ends with a deceptively effective female police...

It’s giving Coen Brothers, That’s the immediate vibe of “Greedy People,” a new crime comedy from director Potsy Ponciroli (the revisionist Wester “Old Henry”) and playwright and screenwriter Michael Vukadinovich (“Kidding”). Everyone wants to be the Coens at one point in their life, and sure, it’s a big goal to aspire to, and it’s ostensibly entertaining to cast Tim Blake Nelson as a familiar yokel.

Potsy Ponciroli’s crime caper Greedy People is a darkly humorous tale that follows the residents of quiet Providence, South Carolina, as secrets and misdeeds come to light after a tragic mistake turns deadly. Joseph Gordon-Levitt leads an excellent ensemble cast in this Coen brothers-style mystery, playing loose cannon police officer Terry, whose poor decisions continually make matters worse, much to the chagrin of his straight-laced partner, rookie cop Will, portrayed by Himesh Patel.

The film opens with Will’s first day on the job, where he naively accepts Terry’s casual approach to law enforcement. But when Will finds himself alone on a call due to one of Terry’s many “shortcuts,” things quickly spiral out of control. What begins as an accidental death soon dredges up greed, betrayal, and questionable motives among the townsfolk as mysteries abound surrounding a stash of cash discovered at the scene.

Greedy People...

Well into the new dark crime comedy Greedy People, I had to check IMDb to make sure this wasn’t some movie one or both of the Coen brothers had actually made and somehow I didn’t realize before diving in. Nope, it was Potsy Ponciroli who directed, and Mike Vukadinovich who wrote it. No Coens anywhere in sight except as the clear inspirations for this entertaining movie of which the masters behind Blood Simple and Fargo would probably approve, and might even have made at the beginning of their illustrious careers.

So get this for a plot.

“Don’t kill anybody unless you have to,” a rookie cop is told on his first day on the job in Greedy People. Not long afterward, he accidentally does just that, setting off a spiral of lethal events that give the the darkly comic thriller an impressive body count. Unfortunately, the proceedings become increasingly tiresome the more the characters are killed off, with the result that despite an impressive cast, the film comes to feel like a Coen brothers rip-off.

Set on a small island town rather than the snowy Midwest, this Fargo-like tale includes a wide array of characters, nearly all of whom prove either gleefully immoral or just plain dumb. The convoluted plot is set in motion when the aforementioned cop, Will (Himesh Patel), responds to an emergency call and nearly shoots a woman (Traci Lords, giving you an idea of the film’s irreverence) simply going about her business in her kitchen.

One would think the good people at Lionsgate might be trying to hide Greedy People by quietly announcing its release in theaters this month, just last week. The Lily James and Joseph Gordon-Levitt vehicle came out on August 23rd with very little fanfare. Not to mention, August (and January) are known as the dumping grounds for films studios are ashamed of.

However, I am relieved to set the record straight: Greedy People is a bloody good time. The film is full of quirky characters, ominous motivations, and moral ambiguity, exploring how ordinary people can be driven to acts of money lust and even murder—all while maintaining the core value of these types of films, where almost no one gets away clean.

It’s easy to forget a time, not so long ago, when Joseph Gordon-Levitt seemed like one of the brightest rising stars in Hollywood. A slew of acclaimed supporting roles in Christopher Nolan movies ranging from the “Dark Knight” trilogy to “Inception” made it seem like the former child star was destined to dominate the next few decades of moviemaking with a halo that rivaled Nolan’s. But it never quite materialized that way, as Gordon-Levitt spent the late 2010s and early 2020s lying low and popping up in forgettable cameos that seemed more interested in cashing in on his celebrity status than expanding it.

It’s forgivable to have wondered, in recent years, whether his talent was overstated in the first place —but a quick viewing of Potsy Ponciroli’s “Greedy People” should quickly rectify that. Gordon-Levitt’s electrifying buffoonery is an easy highlight of the ensemble crime comedy.

DreamWorks Animation has revealed the final trailer for the adaptation of literary sensation, Peter Brown’s beloved, award-winning, #1 New York Times bestseller, ‘The Wild Robot.’

The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot—Rozzum unit 7134, “Roz” for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.

Potsy Ponciroli directs the film which opens on the 23rd August, and we have to admit, we’re more than a little intrigued by the undoubted quality of that ensemble cast. This seems a bit too erratic and messy, jumping all over place with these wacky townspeople.

Nothing happens in Providence, South Carolina. At least that is what is explained to the main character in “Greedy People” before he kills a woman and finds a stash of money. Now, a lot of things happen in that small town.

Uzo Aduba is set to give this year’s commencement address at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. The three-time Orange Is the New Black Emmy winner will deliver her speech May 18 at the school’s Wilson Field in Orange, CA.
