Karan Johar took a huge gamble with the film Student Of The Year, however the film worked wonders not just for the debutant cast but also for the director. Now even before he moves on to his next feature film, Karan will be directing Rani Mukerji and Randeep Hooda in a short film for Bombay Talkies. The upcoming venture Bombay Talkies, which features short films from various directors, will feature Karan directing a love story with Rani and Randeep in the lead. Saqib Saleem (of Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge fame) will also be seen in Karan's segment of Bombay Talkies. While adding a realistic touch to the film, it is learnt that KJo will be shooting the film on the streets of Mumbai. Bombay Talkies (featuring short films directed by Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar and Dibakar Banerjee) will release on May 3, when Indian Cinema will complete its 100 years.

Another year gone by and another lot of impressive newbies have arrived on the Bollywood scene to make their mark. Here are the Top 5 Female Debutants for the year 2012.
5. Esha Gupta – Jannat 2
At no. 5 we have the dusky beauty who won everyone’s heart with the notorious ‘serial kisser’ in not one of but two films in her very first year. Esha won Miss Photogenic in the Femina Miss India contest in 2007 and featured in the Kingfisher Calendar in 2010, before being spotted and starring in her debut film. She had one of the busiest debut years with not one but three films, Jannat 2, Raaz 3 and Chakravyuh. Just when we thought she’d get the ‘Bhatt girl’ title she surprised us in the last release, a Prakash Jha directorial. Thus far she’s gotten mixed reviews for her performance however her appearance impressed us enough to warrant a position on this countdown.

New Delhi, Nov 26: Saqib Saleem started as a model and turned to acting with "Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge". He agrees that modelling is an easier job but says he enjoys facing the camera for movies more.
The 24−year−old made his Bollywood debut in 2011 and says the variety of different characters that one can play is what excites him most about acting.
"When I was a model, I used to enjoy it. But now, I feel acting has given me so much to do... there is so much more to perform. As an actor, I get to do so many characters in various films. It is, of course, tougher but much more enjoyable," Saqib told Ians over phone.

"What I like about Karan Johar is his energy," Rachh told Bollywood Hungama: "We were shooting in Bangkok and were dying of the heat. But he was always on his feet. "He is approving something for his other films on the sets of Student of the Year, because he is a producer [too]... He is intelligent. "He is Karan Johar because of his intelligence. He has got Dharma Productions where it is because of his thinking. Karan is also a great motivator. When we were doing swimming, he used to come up to me and ask me if I was fine. When production companies release news of future projects to come, fans and the media start spinning the wheel of speculation on who will direct and compose the music for the films. Of course, one of the biggest things that always gains the most attention is which actors and actresses will be chosen as the jodi for the film. For many fans it can be that pairing that will make or break any film more than the lack of script or direction. With Bollywood’s continuing affair with screen romance fans have been treated to some epic jodis like Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in Ddlj and more recently Akshay Kumar and Anushka Sharma, which proved to be the crutch of Patiala House. We also loved the jodi of newcomers Saqib Saleem & Saba Azad in Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge. While there have been many that have dazzled in the past,...

Jodis can often be the make or break of a given movie. This year has seen the comeback of some pairings cinema is already familiar with and it’s also given birth to some fresh twosomes. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and take a look at the jodis that we loved, the ones we didn’t quite enjoy and also those that made their own category in between the two extremes.
Shah Rukh Khan & Kareena Kapoor (Ra.One)
Ra.One, quite simply, made this duo look like they were sharing screen space with one another for the very first time. In the movie, the two looked hugely comfortable in their characters’ skins and this, in turn, made them look perfect with each other.
Verdict – Hot

There’s nothing quite as exciting as a list of debutants. Why? They are the future! They’re the ones upon whom all eyes are on. They’re the ones that even make the top heroes feel a bit shakey on their high pedestals. And so it’s time to congratulate and appreciate top 5 male debutants of the year who are now set to post some real threat to our superstars!
5. Vivaan Shah – 7 Khoon Maaf
Vishal Bhardwaj may have not gotten everything right with 7 Khoon Maaf but he certainly had a perfect cast in place. Thanks to him we have a #5 debutant of this list, Vivaan Shah, who just blew us away with portrayal of the grieving Arun whose love for a woman was never realised. The star kid left no doubt in the minds of audiences that he got his debut solely based on talent and name. Welcome to Bollywood Mr.

Once again the time has come to see who are the 5 ladies who made some serious waves in the industry in the year 2011.
5. Preeti Desai – Shor In The City
At number 5 we have the very gorgeous Miss Great Britain 2006, Miss Preeti Desai. After a successful career in modelling, Preeti debuted with Shor In The City opposite Senthil Ramamurthy. Despite being a film that was heavily centred around its male leads, Preeti managed to steal the attention of audiences and hence arrives at our #5 spot. One does hope 2012 brings in more news about Preeti’s films than her relationships as it would be a shame to see such talent go by unnoticed.
4. Parineeti Chopra – Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl
To steal the limelight in a multi-heroine film, and that too from an actress like Anushka Sharma who is known to charm her audiences, has to be one of the greatest feats an actress can accomplish.

2011 has been all about variety. A run-of-the-mill, do it by the numbers soundtrack just won’t cut it anymore, not with an abundance of fresh talent injecting life and creativity into the industry, and pushing the veterans to try harder.
This year it was hard to narrow the list down to just 10 great albums (and even then we had to cheat a little bit!): don’t listen to the people who say Bollywood film music is stale, because they’re obviously not looking in the right places! Here are some of the best soundtrack albums of the year to delight your ears with!

2011 was a great year for music in the Hindi film industry with an eclectic mix of styles, moods, vibes, beats, fresh new sounds and cool grooves. The songs ranged from romantic ballads, to full on rock, to the playful, the funny, the traditional, the internationally flavored ones and everything in-between and even some with the track tinged with a little bit of each. So many of the soundtracks this year were so good that it was not just one song that was killer good, it was most of them. Because so many albums this year were such a good collection of brilliant songs, think Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Delhi Belly, Rockstar and more, we had a tough time limiting ourselves to 25 Best Songs of the year, so we thought why try and decided to go with 50! We now present the 50 best songs of 2011!

Playback singers are the unsung heroes of Indian Cinema (no pun intended). This year, for the very first time, Bollyspice would like to congratulate the following 10 male playback singers for their outstanding work in Indian Cinema in 2011.
10. Mika Singh
No one does a mass entertainer quite like Mika Singh and 2011 was no different with crowd-pleasing hits like like ‘Desi Beats’ (Bodyguard), ‘Dhinka Chika’ (Ready), ‘Saj Dhaj Ke’ (Mausam), ‘Pyaar Do’ (Thank You), ‘F.A.L.T.U’ and ‘Hero’ (Desi Boyz).
9. Shankar Mahadevan
Shankar Mahadevan began the year with a brilliant desi/urban mesh-up, ‘Rola Pe Gaya’ (Patiala House) and followed through with thought provoking ‘Der Lagi’ (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara) and ‘Roshni’ (Aarakshan). However, it was the obscure ‘Chand Pal Ke Humsafar’ (Mod) that was the most impressive.

In a year that boasted some huge family friendly blockbusters and multiple films from some of the biggest stars, it was pretty easy for smaller films with tiny budgets, no big name stars or controversial subjects to fly a little under the radar. Here are ten of the best films that may have been appreciated by the critics, but failed to catch fire at the box office.
10. Soundtrack
Based on British “mockumentary” It’s All Gone Pete Tong, Soundtrack takes a premise that was a source of humour in the original film – a superstar DJ going deaf – and turns it into a touching, surprisingly subtly handled story of a man overcoming his demons and his disability. With a fantastic soundtrack (naturally!), as well as some inventive storytelling, Soundtrack has sex, drugs and rock’n'roll covered, as well as a compelling performance in the lead role from Rajeev Khandelwal.

It was not a year for the classic Bollywood comedy but still we got several giggles, even some guffaws and truly Laughed Out Loud with some of the films this year. 2011 saw David Dhawan’s son Rohit make his debut with Desi Boys, both Aamir Khan with Delhi Belly and Madhur Bhandarkar with Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji, attempted the comedy genre as producer and director respectively. The Deol family came together again in Yamla Pagla Deewana to deliver a hit and Yash Raj even managed to give us a couple of funny features with Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge proving to be popular. We not only polled our team we also took into account the scores the films got on IMDb!
