Kevin Smith (Demons Rising, Dark Target) was to play Jesus in the original inception of the film. Several fight scenes were shot, but schedule conflicts left Smith out of the film. As fate would have it, this paved the way for William Lee to take the starring role. Lee has stated that having a black Jesus made more of a statement and did not follow accepted theology or stereotyped ideas about the nature of Jesus.
Although the very first scene shot for the film was God appearing in a church full of bewildered parishioners, it was cut from the final version. Joe Estevez as God, Deb Perkins (Dark Target, Demons Rising) and Dave Wetzel (Dark Target) were ensemble players from William lee's previous films. Jeff Stine (Man in church) actually went to high school with William Lee.
The original title of Architect of Chaos was "Disciples of Vengeance", which was also the original title of William Lee's film "Demons Rising". Other alternate titles included "Redemption: 13", "Showdown at Red Rock" and "Vengeance is His".
