Timothy Scott Bogart, the eldest son of Neil Bogart, wrote, directed, and co-produced this film. His brother Evan Bogart co-produced and worked in the music department for the film.
The movie originally started filming on July 25, 2019 in Montreal, Canada and the filming was shut down about a month later, when the actors' union AFTRA issued a "do not work" order to its members for non-payment of salaries. It restarted filming in June 2021 in New Jersey. By that time, Samuel L. Jackson, who was originally cast to play George Clinton, was replaced by Wiz Khalifa, Ledisi, Casey Likes and Michael Ian Black replaced Jazmine Sullivan, Steven Strait and Neil Patrick Harris in the parts of Gladys Knight, Gene Simmons and Bill Aucoin respectively, the roles of Berry Gordy and Bootsy Collins, originally played by Kenan Thompson and D.L. Hughley were not re-cast.
