On January 1st, the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse – seen in the animated shorts Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho, and most famously Steamboat Willie – became public domain… which, of course, means we’re now going to get multiple horror movies that feature characters inspired by Mickey Mouse. Within the first three days of the year, we saw the short film The Vanishing of S.S. Willie, a trailer for the slasher movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap, and an announcement that Terrifier 2 producers Steven Della Salla and Michael Leavy and director Steven Lamorte, who previously made the Grinch-inspired horror movie The Mean One, were teaming up for a Steamboat Willie-inspired horror flick that we now know is titled Screamboat. The film is aiming for a January 2025 release, and a teaser trailer made its way online back in August. (You can watch that in the embed above.) Now, Screamboat is set...

The 2022 horror parody of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas is coming down the chimney in style this Christmas with a SteelBook Blu-ray release on December 17.
Steven Lamorte directs from a script by Flip Kobler (The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride) and Finn Kobler.
Krystle Martin, Chase Mullins, John Bigham, Erik Baker, Flip Kobler, and Amy Schumacher round out the cast.
Special Features include:
Audio commentary by director-producer Steven Lamorte and producer-actress Amy Schumacher Christmas Chaos: Making The Mean One Deleted scenes
In my review, I said, “More like a stocking stuffer than a grand gift, The Mean One would pair well with Jack Frost for a spirited double feature of tongue-in-cheek Christmas horror. The fact that it’s receiving a theatrical release is deserving of commendation and support,...

Steamboat Willie might not be as impressive as Disney‘s feature films, but it paved the way for so much that came afterward. It also paved the way for a new pair of horror films about Mickey Mouse, including Screamboat, a film that features a Steamboat Willie-style Mickey as a cold-blooded killer. Screamboat is part of one of the oddest horror trends to come down the pipeline in some time.
‘Steamboat Willie’ era Mickey Mouse joins Winnie-the Pooh in a horror trend
Mickey is one of the most famous characters to originate in film, so Disney had every reason to keep him under copyright for as long as possible. Now, the cartoon Steamboat Willie has fallen into the public domain, meaning that anyone can use Mickey’s original design for anything. With the original iterations of several Disney characters now in the public domain, the door has been opened to parodies featuring twisted new versions of them.
One of the most attention-grabbing parodies is the upcoming horror movie Screamboat which, in case it wasn't obvious, is based on the iconic Mickey Mouse predecessor, Steamboat Willie.
Directed by Steven Lamorte, who previously helmed 2022's The Mean One, a horror based on Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas, the teaser trailer suggests the project will make slasher fans happy.
According to the synopsis, "[Screamboat] follows a group of New Yorkers on a late-night ferry ride that turns deadly when a mischievous mouse begins a rampage, targeting unsuspecting passengers. The unlikely crew must band together to thwart the murderous menace before their relaxing commute turns into a nightmare."
You can watch the newly released trailer below (via FearHQ.com) ahead of the movie's planned 2025 release.

Production on “Screamboat” is chugging right along.
Director Steven Lamorte stepped away from an editing session to update IndieWire on his forthcoming horror comedy, expected in theaters early next year from distributors DeskPop Entertainment and Iconic Events Releasing. You can watch the film’s sinister first teaser trailer, making its exclusive digital debut with IndieWire, above.
“Our movie, while it is bloody and gory and raunchy, it really is a love letter to this character,” said Lamorte, who co-wrote the script with Matthew Garcia-Dunn. “As 2024 got closer and closer, it seemed like the copyright was really going to lapse. After the success of Ron Howard's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (a hit so big even the 2018 animated remake broke box office records), it was a no-brainer for Hollywood to look to other Dr. Seuss books for inspiration for its next success. DreamWorks quickly set its sights on "The Cat in the Hat" and greenlit a live-action adaptation with a budget over $100 million, tapping another Canadian-born comedic A-lister to star in the film -- in this case, Mike Myers, an actor who was at the peak of his career, starring in both the "Austin Powers" trilogy And "Shrek" at the same time. The 2003 film also starred Spencer Breslin and Dakota Fanning, the former a popular actor with kids at the time thanks to "The Santa Clause 2" and the latter a phenomenal young actor too good for this disappointing project.

Los Angeles, Jan 3 (Ians) The 1928 version of Mickey Mouse has entered the public domain, and indie horror producers are wasting no time in capitalising on it.
Steven Lamorte is set to direct an untitled horror-comedy based on Mickey’s cartoon debut. In it, a sadistic mouse will torment a group of unsuspecting ferry passengers, reports Variety. Production is set to begin in the spring. “Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror,” Lamorte said.

The fraudulent Michelangelo who performed at Mar-a-Lago isn't the only imposter version of an iconic animated anthropomorphic animal on the loose at the dawn of 2024.
As of January 1 this year, Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks's "Steamboat Willie" -- the benchmark 1928 black-and-white cartoon short featuring Mickey Mouse in his earliest form -- has officially entered the public domain. That means it's open season for anyone and everyone who wants to use that iteration of the Walt Disney Company's mascot. So, naturally, there's already an influx of horror-themed films and even video games aiming to parody the rodent's family-friendly image. (Nobody tell them that Kevin Smith basically already did that 25 years ago with the Mickey-inspired Mooby the Golden Calf in "Dogma.")
Up first? "Mickey's Mouse Trap." Directed by Jamie Bailey, the slasher film centers on Alex, a young woman who's stuck spending her 21st birthday working a late shift at...

Up first? "Mickey's Mouse Trap." Directed by Jamie Bailey, the slasher film centers on Alex, a young woman who's stuck spending her 21st birthday working a late shift at...

The first of January marks the time when some characters and stories enter the public domain, which means that other creators can use them. We've already seen that happen with the likes of :a[Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood And Honey]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/winnie-the-pooh-blood-and-honey/' }, which despite being fairly dreadful, made enough to spawn a sequel. This year, it's the turn of Mickey Mouse –– or at least, the version of the character and some others as seen in 1928 short 'toon Steamboat Willie. At least two horror movies are in the works, with one, Mickey's Mouse Trap already at the teaser stage, and you can find the footage below…
With Jamie Bailey directing, the film stars Sophie McIntosh, Callum Sywyk, Allegra Nocita, Ben Harris, Damir Kovic, Mackenzie Mills, Nick Biskupek and Simon Phillips. A basic synopsis you wondered about? Here you go… "It’s Alex’s 21st birthday, but...

A second, as-yet-untitled horror film centered on Steamboat Willie, the earliest iteration of Disney’s beloved children’s character Mickey Mouse, is in the works from director-producer Steven Lamorte and the producers of Terrifier 2, the team announced on Tuesday.
News of the project comes just a day after Steamboat Willie’s entry into the public domain. The first horror pic centered on the character, the Jamie Bailey-helmed slasher Mickey’s Mouse Trap, unveiled a new trailer yesterday, which you can view at the link below. Also emerging following the character’s public domain debut was the announcement of new indie horror video game Infestation 88.
Lamorte’s Steamboat Willie horror comedy watches as a late-night boat ride turns into a desperate fight for survival in New York City when a mischievous mouse becomes a monstrous reality. Can a motley crew survive a killer creature with a taste for tourists?...

Another horror film using Steamboat Willie Mickey Mouse as a villain has been announced. More details here:
Well, they wasted no time on this. Earlier today, we brought you the trailer for Mickey’s Mouse Trap, an upcoming horror film which takes full advantage of Steamboat Willie, the 1928 black and white animated film that introduced Mickey Mouse to the world, entering the public domain.
Variety now reports that there’s another Mickey themed horror film coming to our screens. This one is still untitled at the moment, but will veer closer to the Steamboat Willie iteration of the character. The film will follow a sadistic mouse terrorising the passengers on a ferry.
Steven Lamorte is on directing duties for the film, which is reportedly a comedy horror rather than a straightforward scarefest. Lamorte has previously helmed The Mean One, which was a horror parody of The Grinch.

The short film that introduced Mickey Mouse to the world, 1928’s Steamboat Willie entered the public domain on January 1, 2024, and a handful of Mickey Mouse-themed horror projects have already been announced. The upcoming video game Infestation 88 will feature a monstrous version of Mickey, while horror movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap is also coming soon.
And that’s just the tip of this iceberg with mouse-shaped ears, as Variety has announced today that another untitled Steamboat Willie/Mickey horror movie is already in the works.
Steven Lamorte, who directed last year’s The Mean One – itself a horror movie that turned the iconic “Grinch” character into a slasher maniac… we’re sensing a pattern here, Steven – will sit in the director’s chair for the upcoming untitled horror-comedy, which will of course center on “a sadistic mouse” who will “torment a group of unsuspecting ferry passengers.”

First there was “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.”
Now, get ready for “Steamboat Willie” horror films.
The 1928 version of Mickey Mouse entered the public domain on Monday, and indie horror producers are wasting no time in capitalizing on it.
Steven Lamorte is set to direct an untitled horror-comedy based on Mickey’s cartoon debut. In it, a sadistic mouse will torment a group of unsuspecting ferry passengers. Production is set to begin in the spring.
“Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror,” Lamorte said in a press release. “It’s a project I’ve been dreaming of, and I can’t wait to unleash this twisted take on this beloved character to the world.”
Lamorte previously directed “The Mean One,” a horror parody of the Grinch.
“It all comes from our love of these characters,” he said in an interview.

A Complete Guide to the Best Grinch Movies and TV Shows Out There(Photo Credit –IMDb)
The grumpy Grinch, known for his dislike of all things Christmas, has always been a staple of mainstream media during the holidays, thanks to Dr. Suess’s children’s book “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” But it’s the young adults of this generation that relate to this green goblin more than children do. He’s a mean-spirited, cynical, and sarcastic creature who just does not get the appeal of Christmas. He doesn’t enjoy the racket that Christmas causes and prefers to be in a quiet, peaceful place instead. But when the folks of Whoville go too far with their festivities, he vows to destroy Christmas once and for all.
The Grinch is undeniably fascinating. There have been multiple adaptations of him across the film industry centering around the premise of him trying to ruin Christmas.

One cannot understate the popularity of Ron Howard's over-designed 2000 winter holiday film "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas." Although made for an exorbitant budget of $123 million, "Grinch" would earn over $345 million worldwide and become a Christmastime staple in many a home. This despite being a bloated, 105-minute expansion of a 1957 Dr. Seuss picture book that was only 64 pages.
Seuss' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" was previously adapted into a 25-minute TV special in 1966, which itself garnered animated follow-ups in 1977 and 1982. Since 2000, the book was also made into a 2007 stage musical, a 2018 animated film called merely "The Grinch," and a 2020 filmed version of the stage production. 2022 also saw the release of a horror spoof of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" called "The Mean One."
This is all in addition to an unending deluge of Grinch-themed merchandise that floods malls every winter holiday season. The merch, some might say,...

The Mean One, along with Mad Heidi and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey was part of an unexpected crop of horror and exploitation films based on children’s tales that dropped last Christmas. Since Dr. Suess’ Grinch is still under copyright the makers of this film had to change a few names to bring us the tale of Cindy You-Know-Who and the residents of Newville’s battle against the evil green creature known as The Mean One.
Our story begins with a familiar flashback accompanied by the rhyming narration of Christopher Sanders but, in a twist, just as young Cindy (Saphina Chanadet; Balance of the Force) is about to change The Mean One’s attitude her mother appears and attacks him, getting herself killed in the process.

Just earlier today, we shared a trailer for the nursery rhyme turned horror film Mary Had a Little Lamb, which is another entry in a trend that’s currently set to flood the marketplace, the trend of turning children’s stories into horror projects. There’s Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and its upcoming sequel, Bambi: The Reckoning, Peter Pan: Neverland Nightmare, Cinderella’s Curse, Cinderella’s Revenge, Sleeping Beauty’s Massacre, Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Death and Porridge, The Mean One, Belle… Even Jack & Jill and Humpty Dumpty have their own horror movies! Now being added into the mix is Three Blind Mice, another nursery rhyme turned horror film. Winnie the Pooh (Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey and its upcoming sequel), Bambi and Peter Pan (Bambi: The Reckoning and Peter Pan: Neverland Nightmare), Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, Goldilocks (Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Death and Porridge), The Grinch (The Mean One)… if a character was featured in a children’s story or a nursery rhyme, chances are they’re going find themselves dropped into a horror movie these days. The latest in this line-up of fractured fairy tales is a horror movie about Mary and her little lamb, from the Mary Had a Little Lamb nursery rhyme. The horror twist on that nursery rhyme will be receiving a DVD and Digital release on October 3rd, and with that date swiftly approaching a trailer for the film has arrived online. The star of HBO’s hit series “The Last of Us,” Pedro Pascal was the host of “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend, and the sketch of the night brought Pascal into the world of another popular video game. Pascal plays the role of Super Mario in a sketch that imagines a faux HBO adaptation of “Mario Kart,” one that draws heavy inspiration from “The Last of Us” series.
Pascal’s Mario is tasked with getting Princess Peach to safety amid a post apocalyptic landscape, coming across other iconic characters from the Mario Bros. universe along the way.
Instead of the Clickers that Pascal is tasked with fending off in “The Last of Us,” he’s up against everything from the Goombas to Bowser in this horror take on the family-friendly games.
