Kate Reed
- [first lines]
- Ben Grogan: [in single's bar, as he spots lonely lady peering into her glass] Plymouth and tonic.
- bartender: [female voice] Yes, sir.
- Kate Reed: Check please.
- Ben Grogan: You always come in the door leaving?
- Kate Reed: Uhm, it's not my scene.
- Ben Grogan: But here you are. So you were either born on that bar stool, or came in here disguised as a woman who wants attention.
- Kate Reed: And you're wearing a $3000 suit with a pocket square.
- Ben Grogan: I believe my motives are clear.
- Kate Reed: Sorry.
- [appeasing gesture]
- Kate Reed: It has been a while since anybody's offered to buy me a drink.
- Ben Grogan: Really? Did the world go blind?
- Kate Reed: I'm married. Was married. Now, I'm not. Anyway, the ex is on his way to sign the... whatever. But it looks like he has blown me off.
- Ben Grogan: Well, it's just as well. He would have changed his mind.
- Kate Reed: [laughs] Nice try.
- [somber:]
- Kate Reed: Maybe it'll feel... normal someday.
- Ben Grogan: Do you believe in fate?
- Kate Reed: Wow, was that a line?
- Ben Grogan: It's a question.
- [she laughs]
- Ben Grogan: Takes the edge off of picking up strangers in bars.
- Kate Reed: I'm 29.
- [sighs]
- Kate Reed: I'm, uh, nearly divorced, recently orphaned, more recently out of a job. My life is kind of at this... turning point, so yeah... I do believe in fate. And I believe she's a fickle, fickle bitch.
- Ben Grogan: You seem broken.
- Kate Reed: Oh.
- [she scoffs]
- Ben Grogan: I like that.
- Kate Reed: And you're a fixer.
- Ben Grogan: No.
- Kate Reed: Yeah.
- Ben Grogan: No, I tend to make things much worse, and then I disappear.
- Kate Reed: Well,
- [laughs]
- Kate Reed: at least you're decent enough to be honest about it. You don't see that much.
- Ben Grogan: Oh, you must be a lawyer.
- Kate Reed: [lying] School teacher.
- Ben Grogan: Right, you're a school teacher and I'm a decent guy. So...
- Kate Reed: Yeah.
- Ben Grogan: ...cheers to honesty.
- Kate Reed: Hey, cheers. Yeah.
- [laughs, both take sips]
- Kate Reed: Mm. And good night.
- Ben Grogan: [as she leaves:] Is truth the way to your heart?
- [as she turns around:]
- Ben Grogan: Oh.
- [holding up his hands:]
- Ben Grogan: Withdrawn, counselor, I misspoke. We have not yet established that you have a heart.
- Kate Reed: [up close:] The way to my heart would be to do everything and to say nothing. No negotiation, no foreplay, no strategy. Just be who you are and take me.
- [as he hesitates:]
- Kate Reed: Too late.
- [goes off]
- Ben Grogan: [as he drives] It figures you live in a boat.
- Kate Reed: It figures you think this is a time for us to chat.
- Ben Grogan: First rule of humanity, people are usually what they appear to be. I'm very good at this, Karen.
- Kate Reed: [sighs] Kate.
- Ben Grogan: You live on a boat because you are afraid of commitment.
- [she laughs]
- Ben Grogan: And you wear $500 shoes, but you won't spend ten bucks to fix a leaky seal on a propane stove. Which says old money, like the bent-over biddies on Nob Hill that yell at their Jamaican nurses for stealing soap and light bulbs...
- Kate Reed: Okay. All right, all right. First of all, easy. I don't have time to fix a stove. And second of all, you smell new.
- Ben Grogan: Mm.
- Kate Reed: Your car smells new, your clothes smell new. Everything about you smells like somebody just dumped enchanted aftershave lotion on the What-to-Wear section of Details magazine, and then all of a sudden,
- [gesturing comically:]
- Kate Reed: poof, you appeared.
- Ben Grogan: I like nice things.
- Kate Reed: All right, that's it. Look at me.
- [he has to keep his eyes on the road]
- Kate Reed: Look at me.
- Ben Grogan: I'm driving.
- Ben Grogan: Look at me.
- [pulls his face towards her, car tires screech]
- Ben Grogan: I will talk to Mahoney
- [car horn honks at them]
- Ben Grogan: and I
- [grabbing his face]
- Ben Grogan: will get the settlement back on the table. Then you can go to Sam and convince him to just forget about the truth. Because you
- [grabbing his face again]
- Ben Grogan: are probably really, really good at that. And then, you can go back to being a living example of everything I can't stand. And, yes... I live on a boat, because it's my father's... and he's dead.
- [moves way back to her side of the car]
- Ben Grogan: So...
- [she glares at him]
- Ben Grogan: you're afraid of commitment and you're stuck in the past.
- Kate Reed: Unbelievable.
- [shaking her head in disgust]
- Ben Grogan: [as they wait in the hallway, Kate drinking from paper cup] How much coffee do you drink?
- Kate Reed: I don't know. How much coffee is there?
- Kate Reed: [sarcastically] If only we Reeds did everything you wanted us to do all the time, then everything would work out perfectly.
- Lauren Reed: I'd settle for once in a while with you.
- Kate Reed: [sighs] Look, I'm not saying that we... don't sign the divorce papers. But what if we just give it a little bit more time?
