A darkly poetic fable that begins with a little girl drawing figures of people with chalk on the cement of a playground. She takes notice of an unusual crack in the pavement that is seeping a mysterious black fluid, which she follows to an ominous building. Inside, she encounters several bizarre phenomena, including walls that bleed black and tentacles that emerge from the ceiling to touch her. She then witnesses the birth of five terrifying supernatural beings that threaten the existence of her world.

&quot;The Captured Bird&quot; is a 7.5-minute (10 with credits) short film from 3 years ago. The director and writer is Jovanka Vuckovic and I wish I could say this film was as colorful and memorable as the filmmaker&#39;s appearance. It was her first work as a director and a couple more followed since then. Next year, she will probably have her first full feature come out, so looks like she is an aspiring filmmaker with a promising future right now. She also won a couple awards for her work here. The lead actress is Skyler Wexler, mostly known for &quot;orphan Black&quot; these days. Unfortunately, the parts did not form a puzzle for me here. There were a couple semi-scary moments, but nothing too horrible really. And it was just a collection of these. I wish there was some connection or real plot development in this short film, then it could have been a much better watch. unfortunately, I cannot recommend it.

The Captured Bird

Both the poster and the beginning of the short made me believe this was going to be something whimsical, akin to the Chronicles of Narnia, or perhaps a dark fantasy in the same vein of Pan&#39;s Labyrinth. Overall, a decent horror short. The CGI of the monsters was a bit dated-looking (I&#39;m not sure if this was done in purpose) but the atmosphere of fear and tension was on point. The ending was a bit vague. Maybe the premise could be further explored in a feature length film.

Lol, this is forgettable. Just goes to show all you really need in the Canadian Film market is connections--not skill. Upon reading reviews of the DVD it turns out Jovanka even added her final Make up shot from a now defunct fly by night makeup school. She&#39;ll do fine, pumping out generic trivial background noise for Studios like Blumhouse. The Mac n Cheese at the Chinese Buffet. It will sit there to stream...in the background while you do your housekeeping, the dishes or just flipping through TikTok like a typical GenX Canadian. Definitely pays to work those connections though. This is proof.
