“I’m not particularly interested in looking at stories that are very black-and-white,” says Skye Borgman. The award-winning director has earned a reputation for exploring the nuances of harrowing true crimes that are anything but straightforward. “I like to be able to look at stories with various different layers and not necessarily give answers to things, but rather present a nuanced and a flawed perspective,” she says.

Unsolved Mysteries has been airing, off and on, presented in different styles and by different hosts, for nearly forty years at this point. It all began with specials hosted by Raymond Burr, Karl Malden, and Robert Stack in the ’80s, followed by a series that went for several years with Stack as the host. (And Virginia Madsen being added as co-host eventually.) Dennis Farina hosted a revival that lasted a few years. And in 2020, the Netflix streaming series brought the world their Unsolved Mysteries reboot, which doesn’t have a host at all. The first six episodes of this revival, called volume 1, arrived on Netflix on July 1, 2020. Volume 2, also consisting of six episodes, dropped on October 19, 2020. Volume 3, which consisted of nine episodes that were released over a period of three weeks, came along in October and November of 2022. All five episodes of Unsolved Mysteries volume 4 will be streaming on Netflix...

Per Nielsen, Amazon Prime Video’s Chris Pratt-led thriller series “The Terminal List” was watched for 1.6 million minutes during the July 4-10 viewing window, its first full week of availability after premiering on July 1. The series took the No. 2 position on Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart this week, second only to “Stranger Things.”
This viewing window marked the first full week of availability for the two episodes that make up Volume 2 of “Stranger Things” Season 4. Though it remains in the No. 1 position, and has broken several records including holding four of Nielsen’s six biggest streaming weeks ever, the Netflix hit’s numbers are slowly beginning to fall back down, bringing in 4.8 billion minutes of viewership compared to last week’s 5.9 billion.

Fireworks and celebration are in order for “Stranger Things,” which continued its dominance of the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 during the week of July 4-10. The sensational Netflix series notched 4.8 billion viewing minutes, landing it once again on the all-time Top 10 list.
Prime Video also wins for streaming with the Chris Pratt-starring action-thriller “The Terminal List,” which came in at No. 2 on the list with nearly 1.6 billion minutes of viewing. The streamer’s tentpole anti-superhero hit “The Boys” also drew in 1.1 billion viewing minutes (surpassing the billion threshold for the first time) for its epic Season 3 conclusion, landing the show in the fourth slot. Nielsen reported that despite the tendency for streaming titles to skew female, both of these series drew predominantly male audiences.

Photo: ‘Girl in the Picture’ A variety of true crime documentaries uncover the dark realities of human nature that leave viewers stunned and furious at the people who commit these heinous crimes. Now, why do people watch these docs, knowing they will feel upset at the end? I can’t speak for other people who are interested in the true-crime genre but for me, I watch these docs because I want to watch the mystery unravel and just have a morbid curiosity about the details of the crime. Therefore, when I saw a trailer for the Netflix documentary ‘Girl in the Picture’, it got me invested because it’s a doc about uncovering the details of a young woman’s true identity. According to the media release, the new series, premiering Aug. 9, will reexamine the 2019 death of Burt Templet, who was murdered by his son Anthony. A new month has arrived, which means a fresh batch of movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix. Most monumentally, the beginning of the month saw the conclusion of “Stranger Things 4,” which began back in May but is just now finishing up. (There’ll be one more season before the series winds down.) Other new Netflix original series this month include the horror-comedy “Boo, Bitch,” the fourth season of “Virgin River” and the fifth season of all-ages animated spin-off “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous” (which we’ve heard has some surprising connections to this summer’s blockbuster “Jurassic World: Dominion”).
On the Netflix original films side of things, the biggest new release is undoubtedly “The Gray Man.” A nonstop action extravaganza from Joe and Anthony Russo, the directing duo behind “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgmane,” it stars Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling as dueling spies. Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched “Girl in the Picture,” streaming now on Netflix.
Netflix’s true-crime documentary “Girl in the Picture” has quickly captivated audiences with the layered and tragic story of Suzanne Sevakis, who was abducted as a child by Frank Floyd, and raised as his daughter. He sexually abused her, and forced her to marry him — and then she was killed in what Floyd claims was a hit-and-run accident in 1990. She was just 20 years old at the time of her death.
The doc, directed by Skye Borgman, unfolds in a gradual way as if viewers are investigating the crime themselves, leading to many shocking twists and turns. At first, audiences are told that the name of the woman who died was Tonya Hughes and that she had a child, Michael, with her husband Clarence. Then, viewers learn that they were known as Sharon...

Although “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (A24/4.99) has been in the theatrical box office top 10 for most of its 17-week run, it has never been #1. On its best weekend it reached #4, very impressive for an unanticipated independent hit up against the strongest lineup in over two years.
This week, Daniels’ acclaimed multiverse fantasy is a unanimous #1 across three VOD charts. It came close to this when initially released at 19.99 last month, but at the lower price it has corralled all for the first time — and it’s the first time a film outside a major studio has achieved this.
The price drop (1 less than the usual next step of 5.99) may have helped a little at iTunes and Google Play, which count the volume of transactions. But despite its lower price, it also is #1 at Vudu, which ranks by total dollars paid by viewers.
Beyond its increased reach, two factors influence its ranking.
