20 years down the road this catchy and poetic song was released and gave a minor ressurrection to the career of 1980's veteran Ritchie and put him
back on the musical map after a decade outside of radar. I'm not a big fan of his and can't even tolerate much of his biggest hit "Menina Veneno", but I
abolsutely loved this song from the moment I first heard it through this video back in 2002, back when MTV Brazil had programs such as Central MTV and
similar which broadcast countless clips of the moment and this one popped in and I was impressed with everything I've seen.
In "Lágrimas Demais", Ritchie is invited to perform his act on a bingo filled with bored and uninterested people and the only person who shines some
enthusiastic light inside the place is him and the cigarette girl who appears here and there offering her services. In between moments, the artist takes some
break, plays with the slot machine or risk some bingo numbers and even goes to kitchen to have some lunch. But the audience doesn't pay attention to him, they're
all absorbed in their own loneliness just wanting to score some game and win some money. That's the basic idea of the video in showing people's detachment of
things and everyone else.
The whole atmosphere works just fine, specially with the amazing black-and-white cinematography that truly feels like a cinematic moment in music video
format - the director of photography was nominated for the Video Music Brazil and lost to himself for another video, one from Caetano Veloso if I'm not wrong.
But the song is quite positive, life affirming when it comes to show someone who's trying to leave the tears and pain behind and follow his/her life in peace.
It's a strange match but maybe the sounds created for it, the melody and stuff, makes a nice combination of elements with the images presented. And Ritchie
looks very cool and with plenty of style with those glasses, opened suit and tie. And just to proof of how the man was back in shape, that song was used in a
soap opera back then, a reminder of his golden decade that whenever he composed a theme the TV shows started to play it with plenty of success. Can't say the
same about this song since it didn't got radio airplay (a pity because it's too bloody good!).
Fans of the man or not, enthusiasts for power ballads with great lyrics and inspired melodies will find in "Lágrimas Demais" a very lovely song that
also managed to get one of the greatest music videos ever made, with grace, style and some originality. Thumbs way up! 10/10.
