Well, this was no surprise.
As I predicted in my column a couple of weeks ago on the search for a host for the 97th annual Academy Awards, the producing team from the 96th Oscars will be back for the 2025 ceremony.
Live television event producer Raj Kapoor returns as executive producer and showrunner, Katy Mullan as executive producer, and Hamish Hamilton as director of the 97th Oscars, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy president Janet Yang said Monday. It is Kapoor and Mullan’s second time executive producing and Hamilton’s fifth time directing the Oscars. They each won an Emmy for their work on the 96th Oscars, the first time since 1991 that the Academy Awards took the Live Variety Emmy, so their return is really a no-brainer and will allow the Academy to get that much closer to announcing a host (or hosts) for the show.

It wouldn’t be a Ryan Murphy series without a killer lineup of guest stars, and ABC’s upcoming “Doctor Odyssey” has a great one. Country music legend Shania Twain will guest star on the drama, which premieres Sept. 26.
Twain even briefly appears in the first teaser for the drama. “Doctor, welcome aboard the Odyssey,” Capt. Robert Massey (Don Johnson) says in the two-minute long clip. “This ship is heaven. Our mission is to preserve the dream, and that’s why you’re here.”
“I’m in,” Dr. Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson) says in response.
As they have this exchange, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” by the Beach Boys plays in the background as a heart rate monitor can be heard increasing in speed. When the monitor is at its most rapid, the drama cranks up.

There’s “HBO Max” and then there’s everyone else.
On the backs of Succession and The Last of Us, HBO and its streaming counterpart Max led the list of winners at Monday’s 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. While the TV Academy ceased breaking out wins by platform, The Hollywood Reporter tallied up all the trophies from two nights of Creative Emmys as well as the Primetime ceremony and the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed HBO and Max easily topped rival Netflix with 31 statuettes.
Streaming giant Netflix finished second — again — with 22 wins thanks in large part to Beef’s sweep of the limited series category. John Landgraf’s Disney-backed cable network FX delivered an impressive year with 16 wins, with The Bear sweeping in the comedy category and leading all winners in awards that represent TV’s best from 2023. Carol Burnett’s 90 Years of Laughter and Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie were the big winners on night 2 of the Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday, while Queer Eye — already sick with Emmys — took home yet another for Outstanding Structured Reality Show. So did RuPaul (for hosting Drag Race) and The Simpsons (Animated Series), naturally.
Burnett’s sentimental trip down memory lane won Variety Special (pre-recorded), while Still won for Outstanding Documentary and Director (Davis Guggenheim).
“This is very encouraging,” Burnett said from the stage, before telling everyone to drive home safely.
Barack Obama, who was sadly Ma from the awards show in downtown L.A.’s Peacock Theater, picked up a trophy for narrating Working: What We Do All Day, while Welcome to Wrexham racked up wins for Unstructured Reality Show, Editing and Cinematography.

Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, prosthetic makeup artist Barrie Gower, and composers Hans Zimmer, Nicholas Britell and Danny Elfman were among the industry heavyweights who landed Creative Arts Emmy nominations on Wednesday morning.
Four-time Oscar winner Atwood landed her second Emmy nomination in the outstanding contemporary costumes for Tim Burton’s “Wednesday.” Speaking about her work on the show and about recreating the icon Morticia Addams’ costumes, Atwood said, “We reinvented look with this silver fabric on the side, which was bonded to the black, twisted and sewn over. The dress had a more contemporary shape to it. I think we honored the previous versions of Morticia that had come before.
Britell, who won an Emmy in 2019 for outstanding original main title theme music for “Succession” landed three nominations. The composer was recognized for his main title music and original dramatic score work on Disney+’s “Andor.” He also landed a nomination for “Succession.

H.E.R. Way: Why Belle From ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Was a Dream Role for the Oscar-Winning R&b Crooner
A version of this story about H.E.R. and “Beauty and the Beast” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Few multi-hyphenates working these days can claim the take-over of industries quite like H.E.R. In just the last four years, the California native with the signature spectacles has racked up five R&b Grammys, an Oscar (for her stirring “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah”) and a Children’s and Family Emmy for a tune from Netflix’s “We the People.” And after her spirited turn as the beloved Belle from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” in ABC’s 30th anniversary special, the Primetime Emmy might be calling.. And here’s the kicker: She’s only 25.

The power of "Sweeney Todd" lies in its ability to seduce its audience to stare (and chortle) at the ingenuity of murderous cannibalism. Since its 1979 opening on Broadway (starring Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury), the darkly comic "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street" has been a general favorite of Stephen Sondheim's musicals (depending on who you ask). It exists at the intersection of traditional musical theatre and operetta, permitting a flexible theatricality from the small-scale (John Doyle's 2005 version and the 2017 Barrow Street immersive pie shop staging) to the grandiose opera stage. In the hands of "Hamilton" director Thomas Kail, "Sweeney Todd" stays true to its theatrical technicalities on the Broadway stage for the most part.
Inspired by the 1840s penny dreadful serial and Christopher Bond's 1973 stage retelling, Hugh Wheeler's book deals with injustice in 19th-century London. "Sweeney Todd" follows the eponymous barber who returns...

Apple TV+’s new music competition series “My Kind of Country” aims to change the perception of country music in a big way — and you can see a bit of that for yourself in the show’s trailer. Watch it at the top of the page, right now.
From executive producers Reese Witherspoon and country music star Kacey Musgraves, “My Kind of Country” features musicians from around the world who’ve been invited to Nashville, where they’ll compete to win what Apple TV+ vaguely refers to as “a life-changing experience from Apple, including global exposure across the Apple TV+ and Apple Music platforms.”
The series, Witherspoon says in the trailer, was conceived of while she and Musgraves were “talking about how country music should stop limiting people, and start opening doors.” And as part of that, the contestants will be mentored by three stars who themselves don’t fit...

“It’s been a little scary,” H.E.R. shared with E! News earlier this week about the legendary role that was originally voiced by Paige O’Hara in the O.G. 1991 film, followed by Emma Watson in the 2017 live-action adaptation.
“Not scary in a way that I’m nervous about people seeing me, but more so just really being vulnerable in a different way and allowing people in,” she continued. “I’ve...

This past summer, Disney and ABC announced that they would be celebrating the beloved animated film "Beauty and the Beast" with a TV special produced by "Crazy Rich Asians," "In the Heights," and "Wicked" filmmaker Jon M. Chu and directed by the 2012 London Olympic Games opening ceremony director Hamish Hamilton. Rather than commemorate the ground-breaking feature's 30th anniversary (which was last year), the two-hour hybrid animated/live-action special will celebrate the anniversary of the movie's Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Regardless of the reason, the Disney renaissance favorite is definitely worth celebrating.
For the live-action portion of the event, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony-nominated performer Josh Groban will step into the role of the Beast alongside R&b artist H.E.R. as Belle. Rounding out the cast will be Rita Moreno as the narrator, Joshua Henry as Gaston, Shania Twain as Mrs. Potts, Martin Short as Lumiere, David Allen Grier as Cogsworth,...

As ABC gears up for Disney’s “Beauty and The Beast: A 30th Celebration,” producer Jon M. Chu has confirmed that the hybrid live-action will feature a tribute to Angela Lansbury, who died in October. Lansbury voiced Mrs. Potts in the original 1991 animated feature.
“We definitely do a nod to her for sure. How could we not pay tribute?” Chu says.
The filmmaker, who has begun filming on his two-part film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked,” offered some more details on the special: “We have some great cameos in this. Paige O’Hara, the voice of the original Belle, has a cameo. Composer Alan Menken does a little appearance.”
The other surprises will have to wait until the special airs Thursday night.
Described as “part animated film, part live-action spectacle,” the celebration features over 400 costumes by Marina Toybina. Chu and the creatives behind the special spoke to Variety about what to expect from the production.

H.E.R. Ok, so Beauty and the Beast was released in theaters 31 years ago. But that’s not stopping ABC from giving us Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration, a new version of the story that mixes live action with animation. Oscar and Grammy Award winner H.E.R. stars in the special as Belle, and she told us she never could have imagined getting the chance to act (and sing) alongside co-stars like Josh Groban, David Alan Grier, and Shania Twain.
