You sign up for a movie. You drop out. Then the lawsuit follows...
It happens all the time. The casting of movies is such a perilous art, that actors and actresses sign up for roles, and then they're chopped and changed. Rarely does it end up anywhere near a courtroom.
Yet sometimes it does. Here are nine varied instances where someone leaving a project led to legalities ensuing...
1. Kim Basinger - Boxing Helena
I may as well start with one of the most infamous cases of an actress dropping out of a film to which they'd apparently agreed.
Director Jennifer Lynch originally had Madonna pegged to take the lead in her debut feature, Boxing Helena. The story of a woman who has her limbs removed and is kept in a box (it's as charming as it sounds), the role was then offered to Kim Basinger when Madonna passed.

Nearly a month after DGA members ratified their new three-year deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and TV Producers, the WGA today announced that it will sit down for their talks with the producers on February 3. The negotiations are set to take place at AMPTP HQ in Sherman Oaks. While the Writers Guild took the step to announce its negotiating committee on November 13, up to today, neither they nor SAG-aftra had set a start date for their respective talks with AMPTP. Not like the melded WGA West and WGA East committee doesn’t include some heavy-hitting scribes. There’s recently re-elected board members Billy Ray and David S. Goyer as well Damon Lindelof among the group. The committee will serve under Wgaw Exec Director and Chief Negotiator David Young. The WGA’s latest contract is set to expire on May 1. Many young starlets of the '80s have gone on to become bigger stars in the following decades. Back when teased hair and shoulder pads ruled the tabloids, these budding celebrity friendships were just forming. Some would last entire careers. Others would be as brief as a shared table at an awards ceremony. But chances are it'd be hard to get some of these friendships back together, so let's enjoy the memories of these forgotten '80s friendships.
Charlie Sheen and Betty White in 1987.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Leif Garrett in 1983.
Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon in 1988.

Alyssa Milano with a retainer and Corey Haim in 1987.
Goldie Hawn and Steven Spielberg roller skating in 1980.

Terra Nova Canceled. Fox Network has canceled the freshman sci-fi TV show series after its thirteen episode first season. I am not surprised by this at all. I lost interest after the series after the three episode after I realized the main characters were destined to get out of every jam they got into.
In addition the series plot holes were ridiculous. From the first episode: Dr. Elisabeth Shannon (Shelley Conn) sneaks into a prison a metal hand laser. No one checked her? She was able to get that through metal detectors? Even if her husband Jim Shannon (Jason O’Mara) cut his way out of his cell, then what? He is still in prison. The cells were idiotic looking and they just happened to let people freely pass things to one another. That was convenient.
One more thing on the laser front: if small, portable lasers are out in the public,...
