My 82 year old mother-in-law is visiting, so I have to find movies that she might like to watch. Love in Tahiti seemed like something right up her alley. She loves Hallmark movies or anything like them.
I'll start off by saying, she enjoyed it. She has a tendency to drift off to sleep if the movie doesn't hold her attention, but she stayed awake through most of it. Some of the long dialogue scenes with the father caused her head to droop, but she was back into it one the leads were back on screen, even if their scenes weren't any more exciting. I know the slower pace works for her, because it's much easier to follow the story. (She's a big fan of The Young and the Restless, and if there's one thing that soap opera is known for, it's the very slow pacing.) There's not too much to the story, and that's all she needs.
Now, as for me, I think the film could have used a little more "oomph." Maybe that's because the main characters really didn't have great chemistry. It was nice to see them fall in love as they spent more time learning about each other, but they might just as well have been a couple of friends talking over coffee. Part of that is due to the sub-par acting, but that's what all these types of movies have. And even though the dialogue was a cut above what I usually hear in these movies, it didn't trip off of the tongue in a smooth way. It was kind of clunky at times, but again, I appreciate the fact that it was different than other movies like this that I've had to watch with her. Most of those movies would get 3 out of 10 stars, which is why I'm giving this one 5 out of 10.
On the plus side, you have two very nice looking leads in a beautiful location, so at least a big portion of the movie is watchable. If I was forced to watch one of these types of movies again, I could most likely sit through this one. Not a ringing endorsement, but good enough for this perfectly average movie.
