(R)Evolution came about because of Michael Cusack's (Director/Writer) dual interests of art and evolution! He was in an art gallery in Madrid when he saw a painting of a 14th Century alchemist. There was something about the painting that caught Michael's attention. The knowing look on his face and the fact that we all now know that he was completely wrong. Michael was also thinking about where we all come from... so he combined the two thoughts, whereby a scientist creates life in a laboratory using some of the dark arts.
