The truth is too scary and it would have taken immense courage for one to be brutally honest in the depiction of 1984 riots against a particular minority community (Sikh) that took place in almost all part of the country (specially Northern region) in the same time duration.
They chose the narrative from a single person perspective, thus limiting the story line to a man and a lane in a city (that happens to be the national capital as well). Considering the limited approach to one of the terrifying incident in the history of mankind, I would say team Jogi did quite well.
Very intense screenplay, specially the escape sequence and commendable acting by all the main characters. The makers were also successfully in embedding the love story of the lead character without compromising the intensity of the plot (this has something to do with editing department).
This movie wouldn't disappoint you, just watch it with an open mind without too much expectation.

Whilst I do appreciate these earnest attempts, the problem with 'Jogi' is its shallow scripting. While it did shed some light on the killing of our then Prime Minister Ms. Indira Gandhi, and the unimaginable monstrosities that ensued; I believe that there was a lot more to inquire into. The creators have made their choice to not delve deeper into the core subject, or to talk about any of the deep-seated politics that was involved.
They have chosen to constrain themselves inside an invisible enclosure, that prevented them from taking any names of any influential figures or the political parties they associated with, I assume it was to stay away from further disputes and debates.
Albeit I wish they had done otherwise.
That being said, this movie is still deeply affecting. I cannot fathom the sufferings, the horrors, all the Innocent people had to put up with. Some scenes will terrify you, will make you infuriated, and before you could realize what and why is this taking place, tears will be rolling down, your heart will get heavy, and you will feel devastated by the barbarity. It may as well take hours or even days to recover from what you've just witnessed!
Get ready for an emotional roller coaster!

For a movie that went spectacularly for 70% of its time duration, that had so many more truths to show the public, the horrors, the aftermath, the plight of the Sikhs, they ruined it in the last 40 minutes. What was the need to add personal drama? The entire movie felt fictional after that point when you had such an important topic to uncover. Why were there no stats at the end? Were the directors making a movie on a historical topic or a bromance? Why weren't there stats at the end? How many lives were lost during the riots? How long did the army take to intervene and how many survivors did they find. How many people were arrested and what were their sentences. The movie went from a historical drama to fiction based on history so quickly, I would have reshot the last 40 minutes after watching it once. Producers, directors, editors, advisors all at fault for missing their masterpiece.
The biggest achievement of Jogi is that it depicts all characters as human beings--flawed and broken--but humans nonetheless. There are no knights in shining armours and no evil demons. Even the bad guys are not religious fanatics but political opportunists, depicting a reality that has played out far too many times in modern-day India. There have been better films on communal violence but very few as layered and as real as Jogi.
The film may be unpalatable for some given its realism and bold depiction of administration's complicity in violence against a community, but it is an important watch nonetheless, and a step forward for Hindi cinema.

A few movies have been made on the communal violence in Punjab following the assassination of Prime minister Indira Gandhi on 31 October 1984 by her Sikh bodyguards. Talented director Ali Abbas Zafar has made an absorbing and emotional movie which moves you in a big way as it unfolds. A good point of the movie is the superb acting of Diljit Dosajnh as a young Sikh ( Jogi) and Zeeshan Ayyub as his childhood friend Inspector Ravinder. Both have given superlative performances which could get them awards .Kumud Mishra has acted well as a local politician. It is difficult to judge how correctly the movie recreates the actual events that took place. ( This can best be done by people who were there during those days.) The movie keeps the audience engaged with the emotions of the characters. However the film has two negative points. One, a backstory about Diljit's tragic romance ( girl friend Amyra Dastur in a cameo), which becomes an unnecessary diversion from the serious plot. It could have been avoided. Two, the climax looked rather too filmy and not a suitable conclusion to the heart wrenching story.

This movie showed how brutally Sikhs were killed in 1984 delhi riots. Loved how Diljit portrayed the character. The best part of the movie is it teaches that friendship is above everything in this world and hate just leads to wars, riots. I believe that every aspect of the war was shown beautifully by Ali abbas zafar. Although i would have loved to watch this movie in theaters. Rest assured you 1 hour and 56 mins are not gonna be wasted. The one who loved Kashmir files movie should also see this.
The acting skills of Mohd. Zeeshan, Paresh Ahuja and Kumud Mishra is also awesome But one thing please dont judge politicians and Police based on this movie because only few people are corrupt in this system.

The film revolves around the story of friendship and courage in the tough times i.e anti sikh riots of 1984. It depicts the unmindful violence and horror that prevailed on three days of Delhi riots started 31st October 1984. Diljit Dosanjh and Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub's delivers good performances, other characters have not much to do that's where I think screenplay needs to be better. Through Kumud Mishra's character political angle is shown but not properly explored. Potential in characters of Hiten Tejwani and Paresh Pahuja is not properly used. I have seen better movies surrounding 1984 riots like Grahan and 31st October which tells their story and also shows the horror of riots equally.

A story revolving around a power hungry politician who goes on to eliminate Punjabi community post Indira Gandhi's assassination in Delhi. Watch how Jogi comes to their rescue risking his and his friends lives.
Writing of the film is to the point. I couldn't see any character which were portrayed had flaws. Hats off to the entire team of Jogi. Music or background score isn't top notch but keeps you engaging with the film.
I truly wished they had shown what happens to the main antagonist in end but that's just my curiosity.
I highly recommend everyone to watch this. I am not sure if the film ever released in theatres, but it deserves to be.

I must say that this movie took me by surprise. I didn't expect this movie to be that good.
This movie is based on true events, which took place during the mid '80s. Those were the times when many countries had racial and religious riots.
I wasn't aware of these bitter events that took place in India during the '80s, so it was so sad to see that the assassination of one human being, led people in attempting to take revenge and brutally ethnic cleanse one whole race from one particular country just because two members from their ethnic group happened to be the ones who assassinated their Prime Minister.
I think the cast did an excellent job and the movie was produced and directed perfectly, so this one deserves a perfect 10 stars from me as it's one of the best films I've seen in a very long time.
This is one film which is not to be missed and I would highly recommend it.. I recommend the dubbed in English version if Hindi/Urdu isn't your first language.

The character JOGI was a real hero in all sense..
The plot was intense and touchy with the character JOGI who took the movie well from the first scene to the end...zafar is known for his all directional ventures and once again here he has proved himself...Diljit played soft and simple role..kumudji as villain once again proved how versatile actor he is and zeeshan in supporting was impressive..the scenes of riots in vfx were well made..the intensity was well created....the evacuation was also well presented....
Only negative part was the pace it was too slow for this kind of plot...

Waste of time. The time is quite shallow with amateur acting, to a point the movie looses interwar within 25 minutes of runtime. Kumud Mishra has been wasted, the entire cringe test sounds like a propaganda.
Dasonjh has a long way to go apart from cut, copy paste expressions from the get go. To be honest, one can get more expressions from a rock than him.
Perhaps this is one of the rare movie on 1984 riots which I have not liked. Background score is good. The story should have elaborated on the ruling party's misdeeds which could have added to the story line and better presentation.
Casting could have been better.

This movie is brilliant. Screenplay, direction, acting, everything is amazing. I advise you to put some tissue papers beside you because it will make you cry a lot. The screenplay and story literally hold me tightly throughout the movie. One of the best thriller and suspense movie, based on the real events, i have ever seen. One of the best Indian movie of 2022. I find no negatives/flaws in the movie. Throughout the movie you will keep biting your nails. That's the suspense level of this movie. This movie will be remembered forever like Schindler's list. This movie is going abroad for sure. I cried a lot and i am sure you will too.

Hostage/Refugee rescue dramas have delivered some of the most compelling cinema ever seen on screen. Be it the cult classic "Schindler's List (1993)" or the Oscar winning "Argo (2012)" or the Korean classic "Escape from Mogadishu (2021)" or if you were to take Indian examples, "Airlift (2016)" and "Take Off (2017)", perilous journeys of humans escaping persecution, especially when based on true events, instantly strikes a chord with audiences. "Jogi" starring Diljith Dosanjh had all the right elements for a compelling drama, being based on the 1984 Anti-Sikh riots, but stops short of greatness due to a bungled final act.
Diljith Dosanjh stars as the titular "Jogi" a simple government servant in Trilokhpuri, Delhi who gets swept into the carnage unleashed by Congress workers in 1984, in retaliation for Indira Gandhi being gunned down by her Sikh bodyguards in the aftermath of Operation Bluestar at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The horror and human suffering of the 1984 Anti-Sikh riots are shown in intricate detail by director Ali Abbas Zafar and Dosanjh is especially terrific in the emotional sequences, playing the pain and helplessness of a man caught between grieving for his dead relatives and still duty-bound to rescue what is remaining of his family.
Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Kumud Mishra are such seasoned performers that you are used to them turning in pitch-perfect performances and play able foil to a towering Dosanjh lead performance. The perilous journey the refugees embark on is displayed with elan, with the background score and crisp editing playing no small part in building up the nerves, as you are completely sold into their predicaments and plight.
Director Zafar has given us both era-defining triumphs like "Sultan (2016)" and damp squibs like "Bharat (2019)" and Jogi ends up being somewhere in the middle. A trite and tedious romantic back story, inserted at the fag end of the narrative when you expect the suspense and intrigue to hit fever pitch, creates a jarring effect on what was otherwise a superlative storyline. "Jogi" ends up being a case of what could have been, with the contrived final act spoiling a compelling story that deserved to be told and a Diljit Dosanjh performance for the ages. Watch it for the Diljit performance! The film is now streaming on Netflix!

Escape movies are always a treat to watch. Take an example of "Argo" or in case of Bollywood "airlift" this is because they set an interesting premise where everything is going against your protagonist. In case of jogi the story is set in 1984 where Indira gandhi was assasinated by two sikhs and then the whole delhi was violent against the community. After googling I found that more than 3000 people were dead . So basically a scary story. The movie didn't confirm whether it's based upon real story . So it can be assumed that it's a story of three friends where that premise is taken . Diljit as "jogi" shines zeesan ayub smoothly fits into a cop character. All in all the movie delivers what it wanted . It's script is tight . Amyra dastur however is used just as a prop to move the story forward , the place where movie falls flat. Available in Netflix.

Some films leave you stunned with sheer power. Long after you've watched the film, it still sends a chill down your spine if you recall the incidents. Diljit Dosanjh's Jogi (Netflix) based on 1984 sikh genocide is one such film. An intense drama. Bit of slow but Keeps you hooked throughout. #Jogi touches some raw nerves with facts & soul shaking scenes from 84 Sikh genocide. With Top Notch direction Jogi successfully Brings out the pain which has been forgotten years ago. It's definitely hard hitting, but with much needed sensitivity. And I really don't have words to explain what I am feeling right now. Remember ~ 1984 was a genocide of Sikhs not riots.

I found the movie pretty average in storyline, narration and acting. The theme was great but they just tried to make it more cinematic and dramatic with very poor acting and narrative. The plot failed to keep the audience interested. Daljit Dosanj was per say very very mediocre along with Zeeshan Ayub & Hiten Tejani. Amyra Dastur deserved more exposure compared to her cameo. The dialogues were cringe and the climax was too common kind. They wanted to make it a story about friendship against the backdrop of the anti Sikh riots of Delhi but then they got confused about the plot & started deviating and then again came back to the narrative. Overall a one time watch but can be skipped to avoid boredom.

Every character in the movie plays there role to brilliance .... Even the supporting cast specially mother of jogi.. she is just mind blowing ... coming to Diljit Dosanjh .. I think he is most underrated actor in bollywood because the level of acting he does in the movie is just amazing .. looking forward to see him in more bollywood movies ... movie is gripping , full of tension till last , and obviously emotional ride. From the starting of the movie it finds the path ... extra ordinary well directed first half by Ali abbas Jaffar .. can say loose grip in second half but acting level in the second half was just unbelievable.

This is an incident that the Indian government will never want anyone to tell. The story revolves around the killing of India Gandhi by her two Sikh guards and the aftermath. The systemic reaction from the government of India against the Sikh people.
The movie does not hold back, it shows the violence against the Sikh people, how the police supported goons by supplying them with ammunition to go out there and create chaos. Hit lists were made of which Sikh people need to be killed.
Pro hinduists using the situation to incite violence is nothing new to India, recently similar situations happened in Gujrat against Muslims.
From an acting perspective, solid performances from Diljit and Zeeshan, all the supporting cast were good to.
The sad thing is that the reality must have 100 times worse that what the movie depicts.
Expect a lot of Modi boys coming on a forum like this and giving this movie low scores to discourage people from watching this movie.
This is current face of India, everything else is just an illusion.
Thank god for streaming, I don't a movie like would be allowed to be shown on the big screens in India.

Very rare films would tell you the true stories and this is one of them. When I was watching the movie, I was trying to imagine how the situation would have been in real life but the fact is that imagination sometimes cant give you the clear picture always. But the work done by each character in this movie has definitely brought the reality to small screens. What an incredible way to depict the harshness of the ruling government over the minorities. This movie is definitely recommended for everyone who has ever thought of the worst cruelties done by the powerful people. Congratulations to the whole team of Jogi !

It was really a movie that made me cry throughout.
Have been listening to these stories ever since I was a child and hearing them made me sad but seeing this movie took me to that moment and made me cry.
Ghoosebumps and heart wrenching scenes it can't be expressed in words.
The incidents of horror and terror that sikhs have faced in 1984 can't be forgotten or forgiven . Many of my family members just escaped death and but everyone wasn't that lucky.
Performances of each and every actor was impeccable the cinematography and specially the background music really touches your soul.
Highly recommended must watch for every one.
