Two forces behind the beloved Showtime series The L Word have found their way back together.

Creator Ilene Chaiken and star Jennifer Beals have teamed to launch Run-A-Muck, a company described as a cross-platform queer media brand designed to produce content across film, TV and live events. Though they are not ready to reveal any projects that are already packed in their pipeline, the pair did reveal their business partners on the Run-A-Muck endeavor. Beals and Chaiken are joined by founding partners, WME’s director of impact and inclusion, Caroline Joyner, and business executive and entrepreneur, Jenn Smira.

One of the greatest horror-comedies of all time, Dan O’Bannon’s 1985 movie The Return of the Living Dead ended up launching a franchise that to date includes five total movies, but you mostly only hear horror fans talking about the first three. The first sequel came in 1988 and featured returning actors, but 1993’s Brian Yuzna-directed Return of the Living Dead 3 went in an entirely different direction with a wildly different storyline. It’s become a cult classic in recent years, thanks in large part to its central villain, a sexy zombie played by Melinda Clarke.

And then we got Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis and Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave, both released direct-to-television in 2005. Why don’t horror fans talk about them? Well, they took the franchise down a not-quite-desirable path, the two films cheaply made and shot at the same time. And...

Tending to his beloved cows is what keeps Lawrence MacEwen going.

The 80-year-old and his family have farmed the fabulously named Isle of Muck (located in the Inner Hebrides off the coast of Scotland) for the last 60 years. But time has taken its toll on Lawrence, his farming methods, and the precarious community he has called home since birth.

Lawrence’s attempt to keep mucking in, to keep running a community on the edge of survival is the subject of “Prince of Muck,” a new documentary from Dutch filmmaker Cindy Jansen, which is having its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Variety caught up with Jansen ahead of the premiere to discuss crafting “a big story on a small island.”

What piqued your interest in this community?

I was mostly interested because of an article about Canna, which is an island you see from Muck. It was in...

Horror Channel are set to kick off 2017 in horrific style, with seven fearful film premieres in January alone! Premieres that include the UK TV premiere of Ted Geoghegan’s terrifyingly taut ghost story We Are Still Here, starring horror icon Barbara Crampton. When a film prominently advertises that the 2012 Playboy Playmate of the Year is in its cast, you can generally suspect what kind of experience awaits you. When the opening credits roll over footage of a topless woman stumbling around a field, her face obscured so that she is literally no more than a pair of breasts, your suspicions are immediately confirmed. Such is Muck, an indie horror flick more interested in sexy women than scares. The debut feature from writer/director Steve Wolsh, it chronicles what happens to a group of hot young things in the fictional Cape Cod town of West Craven (yup) as they are terrorized by a mysterious killer (played by Kane Hodder, a stuntman and horror icon best known for playing Jason Voorhees in four of the Friday the 13th movies). Spoiler alert: Most of them die, in brutal and barbaric fashion.

Listen, I’m all for Z-grade horror debauchery, but only when it’s crafted with a modicum of respect for the genre. That is not this movie.

Muck Attempts to reinvigorate an ultra-sexpot subgenre from sleazier times, but filmmaker Steve Wolsh couldn’t have missed the bullseye more if he were blind-folded and handcuffed. All we get is a perverted excuse to parade around Playboy Playmates in little-to-no clothes at all, as the camera blatantly focuses its attention on tits, ass, and the occasional flash of bro abs. You’d think there’d be some sort of story hidden beneath the murky waters of Muck, but I assure you it doesn’t exist – that would take away from the lengthy montages of sexy, helpless models who are forced to helplessly shamble around in a swamp for what seems like hours. It’s kind of like watching Skinemax, except without the gratuitous sex.

To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, genre fans have a handful of indie horror films and a mind-bending cult classic making their home entertainment bow this week to look forward to. Anchor Bay’s highly anticipated slasher Muck is getting released on Blu-ray and DVD, Arrow Video is resurrecting Mark of the Devil on Blu-ray for fans in the Us and Breaking Glass’s latest, A Cry From Within, is also coming to DVD as well.

A new clip for the horror feature Muck has been released. Leading up to a March 13th release, the clip shows actress Lauren Francesca as Mia, fighting off a creature. Welcome to our latest horror round-up! We have news on Blumhouse Productions' upcoming family-friendly horror film and the event series adaptation of the massive monster comic book, Enormous, as well as a look at a new Videodrome-inspired poster from Cavity Colors and a special Hollywood screening for the Kane Hodder-starring fright film, Muck.

Blumhouse Family Horror Movie: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Harald Zwart (2010's The Karate Kid, Agent Cody Banks, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones) will direct an upcoming, untitled family-friendly horror film from Blumhouse Productions.

Robert Ben Garant (who played Deputy Travis Junior in the Reno 911! TV series and has co-penned Hell Baby and scripted Jessabelle and Blumhouse and Universal's upcoming The Veil) wrote the screenplay for the film, the plot of which has not yet been revealed. Jason Blum produces the project with Jeanette Brill and Couper Samuelson executive producing. Stay tuned to Daily Dead for further updates.

Writer/director Steve Wolsh is getting ready to Muck you up, again.

Earlier this week an exclusive clip was released from the Muck team through www.ScareTissue.com introducing the world to Wolsh's 'Muck Creepers'.

Practical effects are the name of the game in Muck, a throwback horror flick that will eventually come to be the middle part of a trilogy of tales. Today we've got a handful of brand new stills along with some nifty comic book-style artwork for ya, so dig into the Muck!

WithanO Productions revealed a lengthy trailer for Muck and I honestly can't tell you what it's about.  I hoped the press release that accompanied the piece would tell me, but no luck.  The Facebook page?  No dice.  But that spot tells me, "Muck is the highly stylized and hyper-violent middle chapter of a true horror trilogy that unfolds like a love letter to horror fanatics everywhere."  The official site?  No go.

Oh well, I'll tell you what we do know: Kane Hodder appears somewhere in here and Playboy playmate Jaclyn Swedberg also stars for writer-director Steve Wolsh.  I'm going to just present the rest of the press release because it ends with something that drives me a bit crazy.

Wolsh has already started the prequel, titled Offed. Muck brings evil out of the marshes and into your living room, with the film's first trailer.
