Two of Britain’s biggest stars won top honors at the BAFTA TV Awards on Sunday: Timothy Spall finally prevailed in the Best Actor race after three previous bids while Sarah Lancashire collected a bookend Best Actress award for the third and final season of “Happy Valley”; she’d won for season 2 back in 2017 and has a supporting prize for “Last Tango in Halifax” as well.
Backstage, Spall readily admitted, “I’m over the moon about this. I just am. So often the bridesmaid, today I catch the bouquet.” He then pondered the importance and meaning of awards ceremonies. “When you keep losing them, you think they’re a load of bollocks. And then you win and you think well, actually… Really, I suppose, in a way, they are both — they’re magnificent and they are an in-house thing. But it’s a profession — a dodgy, shaky, insecure profession that occasionally celebrates itself,...

Death In Paradise returns to our screens in February, and the BBC have released plot and cast details.
Death In Paradise has been one of the BBC’s most successful dramas in recent years. Created by Robert Thorogood in 2011, the show’s thirteenth series is about to hit our screens. It has seen Ben Miller, Kris Marshall, Ardal O’Hanlon and current detective Ralf Little solve a remarkably high number of murders for such a small Caribbean island.
Last year, Marshall’s character Humphrey Goodman starred in spin-off Beyond Paradise, which paired him with Not Going Out star Sally Bretton and relocated the action to Cornwall. Proving popular with viewers, it recently returned for a Christmas special and a second series will be broadcast this year.
A further spin off, entitled Return to Paradise was announced last year, with action taking place in Australia.

We’re bereft. Happy Valley has ended for good. No more Catherine and Clare having mugs of tea on the back step, no more Sgt Cawood dressed like RoboCop, no more Ryan, no more Tommy Lee Royce. It went out with a bang, but still we’re bereft. What could possibly fill that gap?
Luckily for fans, creator Sally Wainwright has a healthy back-catalogue including comedy At Home With the Braithwaites, Last Tango in Halifax, Unforgiven, Gentleman Jack and more, plus highwaywoman drama The Ballad of Renegade Nell coming this year to Disney+, so you could start there. As millions of viewers in the UK prepare to sit down on Sunday evening for the grand finale – and last ever episode – of hit crime drama Happy Valley, one small town will have a special reason to toast the success of this massively popular and critically acclaimed show.
With just 4,500 residents, Hebden Bridge is a pretty market town in West Yorkshire, long known for embracing alternative lifestyles and providing a sanctuary for those wanting to get off the beaten track.
But in recent years, it has become best known as the location for many of the scenes shot in hit crime drama Happy Valley, the BAFTA-winning show written by Sally Wainwright and starring Sarah Lancashire as the brow-beaten but never defeated Sergeant Catherine Cawood.

Fans of HBO Max’s “Julia” were boiling mad when the delicious series about the legendary Julia Child’s early days of television stardom failed to earn a single Emmy nomination over the summer. But with Golden Globes nominations less than a week away, some hope is beginning to simmer again for its captivating star Sarah Lancashire, who could rightly nab her first ever bid for her transformative and utterly charming performance.
According to our current combined odds, Lancashire will just make the cut in the TV comedy actress race, rounding out a category that we anticipate will feature returning champion Jean Smart (“Hacks”), Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Selena Gomez (“Only Murders in the Building”) and past winner Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”).

Described as an “edgy, YA drama that’s grounded in the modern day,” the Netflix series is set in a world where witches live amongst us. “Expect magic, sarcasm, banter, potions in zip-lock bags, hunters, romance, loyalty and unbreakable friendship…it’s a truly f*cked up ride.”

In “The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself,” sixteen-year-old Nathan (Jay Lycurgo) is the illegitimate son of the world’s most dangerous witch. In addition to winning last year’s Emmy race for Best Comedy Actress, Jean Smart (“Hacks”) claimed all of the other major TV awards bestowed by the Screen Actors Guild, Critics Choice, Golden Globes, Television Critics Association and, yes, even Gold Derby. At this stage of the 2022 Emmys derby, Smart is the de facto front-runner to gallup across the finish line yet again, but she’s hardly the only horse in this race. Joining her currently in the Top 7 are Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Kaley Cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”), Issa Rae (“Insecure”), Sarah Lancashire (“Julia”) and Selena Gomez (“Only Murders in the Building”).

Jabari Banks remembers the exact date that his favorite actor, Chadwick Boseman, passed away. It was August 28, 2020, and Banks was working at a factory in Temecula, Calif., doing a temp job wrapping gutters. Yes, that is a job that Banks had just a year before getting his big break as the star of Peacock’s “Bel-Air.”
But back to the factory. “My mom got me a temp job, so I flew from Philly to Temecula where they paid for our housing, our transportation, our food and everything. Super sketchy.” He was staying in the hotel when he got the news of Boseman’s death.
“He’s such an inspiration to me,” Banks said. “That day I was like, I want to continue what he was doing for our community. I want to be an impact on the youth as like he was for me, and for so many people around me.

The first thing you need to do whilst watching HBO Max’s “Julia” is to get all other versions of Julia Child out of your head. That proves easier than might be expected, given such enduring depictions as Meryl Streep’s lauded turn in Nora Ephron’s “Julie and Julia” (2009) or, most cartoonishly, Dan Aykroyd’s “Saturday Night Live” performance of Child as a careening agent of chaos who constantly bleeds out like a geyser. In its early offings, “Julia” acts as a deliberate counterpoint to those larger-than-life portrayals, bringing Julia back down to earth as a flesh and blood human woman, played with empathetic precision by Sarah Lancashire. She’s still the life of the party, but she’s also prone to the adrenaline crash after the food’s gone and the guests leave.
This isn’t to say that “Julia” is so grim. In fact, it’s very...

British actress Sarah Lancashire, the star of Netflix’s “Happy Valley” and “Last Tango in Halifax,” was not the least bit daunted in taking on the role of famed chef Julia Child, despite the cooking star’s hard-to-nail voice and the fact that Meryl Streep so memorably played Child in 2009’s “Julie and Julia.”
The HBO Max series, called “Julia,” debuts on March 31 and co-stars David Hyde Pierce as Child’s husband, Paul Cushing Child (played in the film by Stanley Tucci), and Bebe Neuwirth as Avis DeVoto, Child’s editor.

Everybody’s talking about Jamie, and with good reason. For one thing, he’s gorgeous. For another, he’s totally magnetic. The third reason, which ostensibly gives the movie its title, is that 16-year-old Jamie wants to be a drag queen. “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie,” a glitzy movie musical based on the West End hit, gives only a passing glance of Jamie’s actual drag performance, but this is plenty entertaining. Following on the heels of “The Prom,” which debuted its movie version late last year to mixed reviews, “Jamie” is a glittering addition to the fast-growing sub-genre of the queer teen musical. Finally, musicals are playing to their audiences.
Set in the Yorkshire town of Sheffield, England, “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” revolves around aspiring teen drag queen Jamie (Max Harwood). Though he’s comfortably out at his stuffy high school, he still incurs the wrath of the occasional bully...

Netflix is adding a total of 18 new movies and TV series to its library over the next seven days. While that’s not the biggest haul of fresh additions ever, especially after everything that dropped on the platform during the first week of January, it still contains a bunch of must-see titles, including both original content and newly licensed films, that you’ll want to check out.
Monday kicks things off with hard-hitting documentary Crack and French comedy-drama The Intouchables. On Tuesday, meanwhile, the fourth season of British series Last Tango in Halifax debuts. Wednesday then delivers a couple of titles for crime enthusiasts – 2017 thriller An Imperfect Murder (also known as The Private Life of a Modern Woman) starring Sienna Miller and Alec Baldwin and documentary Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer.

The first month of a new year is a good time to make a new impression. And that’s just what Netflix seems set on doing with its list of new releases for January 2021.
The streamer is coming out strong with a third season of Cobra Kai, formerly of YouTube Premium. The next installment in Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence’s story is set to arrive…eventually. Netflix has not unveiled a released date yet but it will be during this month. While Cobra Kai is the highlight among Netflix’ original series, it’s not the only one by a long shot. Last year’s fun Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous returns for a second season on Jan. 22 and it will be accompanied by Fate: The Winx Saga. Also, if you’re a fan of things that will one day be .gif’ed to death, the Nicolas Cage-hosted History of Swear Words drops on Jan.

January is usually referred to as the theatrical industry’s dumping ground, where projects destined to fail are shoved out into the world to die a slow and painful death at the box office. Obviously, next month could see almost every new release face a similar fate as business is still showing no signs of recovery, but Netflix are looking to buck the trend and rehabilitate January’s reputation as a safe haven for fresh content, and the streaming service have some major original movies and TV shows on the horizon.
The most exciting without a doubt is History of Swear Words, which sees Nicolas Cage hosting a six-episode series that delves into the origins and multiple uses of profanity. Anyone who doesn’t have their curiosity immediately piqued by the idea of Hollywood’s most manic and memeable actor fronting a show where the episodes are titled “F*ck...

UK producer and executive Nicola Shindler, who most recently served as Chief Creative Officer of Studiocanal UK, is leaving the Euro studio to launch a scripted label within ITV Studios.
Based in Manchester, the label will see her develop and produce premium drama for the UK and international market. She will join and launch the label in 2021 with international distribution handled by ITV Studios.
Shindler is known for her work on series including Happy Valley, Last Tango In Halifax and Queer As Folk. She won her first of seven BAFTAs as producer on Hillsborough for ITV.
The respected producer joined Studiocanal in 2018 following the departure of long-time UK chief Danny Perkins. However, there was less room at the inn after the arrival of former eOne UK boss Alex Hamilton earlier this year, an appointment which saw Shindler’s role shift from UK CEO to UK Chief Creative Officer.

U.K. super-producer Nicola Shindler is to step down from her production company Red, and launch a scripted label under ITV Studios. Based in Manchester, the new firm will develop and produce premium drama for the U.K. and international market.
Shindler, who most recently served as chief creative officer of London-based Studiocanal U.K., will join ITV Studios and launch her new company in 2021, though it’s still unclear when in the year she will join. International distribution for Shindler’s new label will be handled by ITV Studios.
The new venture effectively brings to a close Shindler’s relationship with Studiocanal, which took a majority stake in Shindler’s production company Red in 2013. She became CEO of Studiocanal U.K. in 2018, but stepped into the chief creative officer role earlier this year after Entertainment One executive Alex Hamilton was made CEO of the U.K. operation.

Oliver Krimpas’s flirty, sweet drama recalls Greenaway, Rohmer, Kieślowski and Kaufman and is uniquely weird and pleasing
Shot a few years ago in Normandy and shown at a few small film festivals back in the Before Times of 2019, this intimate and yet deliciously cerebral romance perfectly suits the lockdown mood of 2020. There are effectively only two, socially distant characters (if you don’t count the chap in golfing kit who passes fleetingly through silently towards the end).
English northerner Maggie is a young estate agent way too smart for the job. She has been assigned to show posh-spoken location scout Bernard (Game of Thrones alumnus Gethin Anthony) around an empty chateau. As they amble through the rooms and grounds, she explains to him how this was where Bernard le Bovier de Fontenelle conceived his sui generis book Conversations on the Plurality of Worlds (a real thing indeed) in the...

Following Amazon Prime Video’s big hit with “Good Omens,” David Tennant and Michael Sheen will reteam to star in a brand new BBC lockdown comedy “Staged,” produced for BBC One by Infinity Hill and Gcb Films and due to air in June.
“Staged” turns on the cast of a play, described as the cream of British acting talent, who, furloughed when their upcoming West End production comes to a halt, attempt to keep rehearsals on track despite lockdown, BBC announced Friday.
The set up looks set to play with on-stage and off-stage fiction and true-life reality, with a dose of bathetic realism added by self-shooting and video conference technology as well as Tennant and Sheen’s portraying lockdown at the expense of their own dignity. The line-up also includes actor Georgia Tennant (“In the Dark”) and Anna Lundberg, Tennant and Sheen’s partners in real-life, as well as theater actress Lucy Eaton.

What was wonderful was to feel how robust that family was and (how they were) able to take it as a group of actors and as an ensemble.
The 51-year-old British writer shared news of her diagnosis during a screening of the second season premiere of BBC One and Sundance TV drama “The Split,” which is produced by “Chernobyl” outfit Sister Pictures and Little Chick.

PBS and ITV have unveiled the first trailer for period drama Sanditon. The series is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s unfinished final novel Sanditon that stars Reign star Rose Williams and Downton Abbey and Divergent’s Theo James.
Williams and James star alongside Last Tango In Halifax’s Anne Reid and Love Actually’s Kris Marshall in the eight-part series. Produced by Death in Paradise producer Red Planet Pictures, it was written by War and Peace and Mr Selfridge writer Andrew Davies.
Written only months before Austen’s death in 1817, Sanditon tells the story of the impulsive, spirited and unconventional Charlotte Heywood, played by Williams, and her spiky relationship with the charming Sidney Parker, played by James. When a chance accident transports her from her rural hometown of Willingden to a would-be coastal resort, it exposes Charlotte to the intrigues and dalliances of a seaside town on the make.

HBO and the BBC’s period drama “Gentleman Jack” has been renewed for a second season at HBO, the network announced Thursday.
“We’re thrilled that Anne Lister’s story has resonated so powerfully with audiences in the U.S. and abroad, and we’re grateful to Sally Wainwright and the entire ‘Gentleman Jack’ family for bringing her story to life,” Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Drama Programming, said. “Anne’s journey is an important and courageous one and we can’t wait to share this next season with the world.”
“Gentleman Jack” is created, written and co-directed by Wainwright, and stars Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle (“Peaky Blinders”).

It’s a rare series that can say so much with a single image. In the poster for “Gentleman Jack,” Sally Wainwright’s rollicking new period comedy for HBO, the actress Suranne Jones stands in half profile, cutting an undeniably intriguing figure. Her hair rests in tight ringlets above the ear, she looks exceedingly smart in her top hat and waistcoat — both black, her color of choice. Her head is cocked to the side, and, turned away from the adoring woman at her side, she offers a cunning smile.
This is Anne Lister, or the TV version of her anyway, and just a few minutes into the first episode of “Gentleman Jack” one thing becomes very clear — there has never been a true life character more worthy of her own TV show.
Born in Halifax, England, in 1791, Anne Lister was a diarist as prolific as Samuel Pepys. That her name...

The new HBO limited series “Gentleman Jack” tells the little-known story of Anne Lister, a woman far ahead of her time in Victorian England. Openly gay, she chronicled her extraordinary life in a diary that ran to more than four million words. BAFTA-winning writer Sally Wainwright tapped into this tome to bring to the screen a glimpse into the world of this fascinating woman.
Suranne Jones, who won a BAFTA for her riveting work as a woman scorned in “Doctor Foster,” takes on the role with abandon. In just two years, Lister took over as the head of her family estate and opened a colliery that employed hundreds, all the while romancing Ann Walker, a young heiress (Sophie Rundle) who she wants to marry.
Sally revealed that she had wanted to make this TV series for more than two decades. As she explains, “I used to visit Shibden Hall a...
