2023 has, overall, felt like an up year at the box office. We've had massive hits like "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" that helped deliver a monster summer movie season, we've had original films like Wes Anderson's "Asteroid City" find their audience, and horror has reigned supreme with the likes of "M3GAN" and "Five Nights at Freddy's" putting a lot of butts in seats. Disney, however, has had a down year and, as evidence of that, not a single one of the studio's mega-budget blockbusters released this year will cross the $1 billion mark.
Disney's highest-grossing movie of the year is director James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," which topped out at $845 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo. That makes it the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year behind "Oppenheimer" ($950 million), "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.36 billion), and "Barbie" ($1.44 billion). From there, it's a steep drop-off, with Disney's next biggest...

“The Idol” has been the TV season’s spite-watch de rigueur – a mess of untenably dated misogyny, homophobia, angry interpersonal sexual violence and traumatic hair styles, all of it justified in the service of reminding the world: Never trust a dude with a rat tail.
Despite that, the show’s icily epic music — made by its creators and actors, in and out of character — has been mesmerizing… thrillingly so, even. The music was initially broken down as a series of EPs released between June 9-30, and now those weekly teasers are captured in full on “The Idol (Music from the HBO Original Series),” a soundtrack that stands as a far more rewarding and cohesive document than its televised counterpart.
The collection kicks off with “The Lure (Main Theme)” from the Weeknd and Mike Dean — aka “muthafucking” Mike Dean, the self-proclaimed stoner, vintage-synth-heavy producer-composer who played a heightened version of himself...

Israeli director Rama Burshtein-Shai focuses on an unlikely attraction in her eight-episode series “Fire Dance,” now debuting at TV festival Series Mania in Lille, France. Faigie (Mia Ivryn) is just 18 when she starts paying closer attention to Nathan, thirtysomething married son of their ultra-Orthodox community’s leader. Produced by Yes TV, Firma Productions and Kuma Studios, it has Yes Studios handling international sales.
“I don’t think it’s a story about impossible love. It’s a story about how you deal with passion,” Burshtein-Shai tells Variety. “You can get burnt or you can shut it all down, so what will you do?”
Arguing she is “all about hope” in her work, Burshtein-Shai doesn’t shy away from despair in “Fire Dance,” opening with Faigie’s suicide attempt. When Nathan helps her, it marks the beginning of their bond.

Israel’s leading multi-channel platform Yes TV and its production-distribution arm Yes Studios will be launching a record 43 series and documentaries in 2022. The lineup includes several new shows in post production, notably “Fire Dance” and “Bloody Murray,” and some series in development such as “Alef.”
Yes Studios — which is behind two of Israel’s biggest scripted hits in recent history, “Fauda” and “Shtisel” — is co-developing “Aleph,” a six-part series that’s being co-created by Odelia Karmon based on her book “Confidante” about the behind-the-scenes happenings of Israel’s political leadership. Karmon worked for more than 25 years as press adviser for Israel’s top political figures, from Benjamin Netanyahu to Ariel Sharon and former president Moshe Katsav. Karmon accused Katsav of rape during his term as tourism minister, and her key testimony led to his resignation in 2007. He was convicted on two counts of rape, among other charges, and sentenced to seven years in prison.
