Three-time Oscar-nominated actor Sigourney Weaver will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 81st Venice International Film Festival.
Weaver said, “To be gifted this award is a privilege I share with all the filmmakers and collaborators I have worked with throughout the years. I proudly accept this award in celebration of all who have helped bring these films to life.”
Venice’s director Alberto Barbera, whose mandate was just renewed, said, “An actress of the caliber of Sigourney Weaver has few rivals. Strengthened by her significant theatrical training, she won over the great film-going public with ‘Alien,’ directed by Ridley Scott, soon becoming an emblematic figure of the 1980s.”
“During the course of that decade, she forged the image of a heroine unprecedented in the action film genre, able to victoriously rival the male models who, up to that point, had dominated epic and adventure movies. Not satisfied...

Philippe Falardeau returns to features with what is a Montreal-based book adaptation of a 2021 novel by Alain Farah. Falardeau is set to adapt and direct Mille secrets mille dangers for what we imagine might be a 2023 shoot.

Swiss filmmaker Lionel Baier has completed the third movement in his sweeping film tetralogy concerning Europe with “Continental Drift (South).” The film, which debuts at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, sees Baier shifting his focus southward to Sicily in 2020, just prior to the Covid-19 pandemic and deep within the European migrant crisis.
Isabelle Carré plays Nathalie Adler, who has been dispersed to a migrant camp in Catania, Sicily ahead of a visit from Macron and Merkel only to find her pugnacious son Albert, played by Canadian Théodore Pellerin working against her interests as an activist.
The film, which is produced by Bandita Films with Rts and Les Films du Losange handling sales, strikes a balance between political satire and heartfelt drama, as Nathalie and Albert push and pull, magnetic at the edges of their estrangement. Europe cleverly serves as both vibrant backdrop and catalytic metaphor as the pressure builds around parallel narratives.

Since its launch in 2015, the Berlinale Series section has emerged as a kind of a boutique scripted TV fest set within a major film festival.
The Berlinale was famously the first A-list festival to embrace changing viewer habits and to officially incorporate television drama into its lineup — and this head-start is reflected in the growing stature of Berlinale Series.
Taking place over a concentrated three-day period (Feb. 14-16), Berlinale Series offers up seven world and international premieres from around 200 entries, giving each of them the red-carpet treatment at the Zoo Palast cinema.
Running parallel, the Berlinale Series Market — part of the European Film Market — offers up an online conference program, showcases and screenings. Its Berlinale Series Market Selects curates a selection of 14 series being traded on the market. Meanwhile, Co-Pro Series looks to pair 10 early-stage international series projects with co-producers and financiers through a series of pitches and meetings.

Joel Edgerton and Sigourney Weaver will star in “Master Gardener,” a new crime thriller from Paul Schrader, a master of the genre.
Schrader is on a bit of a hot streak after scoring an Oscar nod for his screenplay for “First Reformed.” Astoundingly that marked his first nomination despite penning some of the greatest movies ever made. His new drama, “The Card Counter,” debuts at the Venice Film Festival. He’s previously plumbed the dark depths of the soul in works like “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull.”
In Schrader’s next outing, Edgerton will star as the master gardener of an American estate who is forced to confront his dark past. Weaver will co-star as his employer, a wealthy dowager, who demands that Edgerton’s character take on her wayward and troubled great-niece as a new apprentice. Chaos ensues…or so says the official longline.

Adapted from Joanna Rakoff’s memoir, My Salinger Year (known as My New York Year in the UK) is a watchable little film that strolls along with a quiet literary charm. But what is it? It has neither the laughs of a comedy nor the emotional stakes of a drama, and it can hardly be called a biopic because who’s heard of Joanna Rakoff? Like The Artist’s Wife, that recent muse drama starring Bruce Dern and Lena Olin, My Salinger Year is a low stakes affair about the strain of creativity. This is a superior piece of work though; lighter, airier, easier on the eyes. It was shot entirely in Montreal, but you get a strong West Village vibe with its coffee shops and cobbled streets.
This is New York in the summer of 1995, but you’d hardly know it for Joanna (Margaret Qualley) has landed a job at Harold Ober Associates,...

With her new film My New York Year released on 21 May, plus Ghostbusters: Afterlife and endless new Avatars in the offing, we sift through the career of Hollywood’s imperious, stylish powerhouse
William Friedkin directed this broad, knockabout comedy about arms dealing without much flair and it is really only a vehicle for that lost legend of 80s screen comedy, Chevy Chase. He is a small-time arms dealer and Sigourney Weaver plays the haughty and enraged widow of a corporate defence contractor, Wallace Shawn, blaming Chase for her husband’s untimely death in the fictional South American state of San Miguel, where both men had been touting for business. United by greed, and maybe a spark of something more, Weaver joins Chase on a mission to close the arms deal of the century. This doesn’t do justice to Weaver’s class and style.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review, a perspective on “My Salinger Year,” a new release adaptation of the memoir of the same name by Joanna Rakoff. The Salinger is of course J.D. Salinger, the legendary author and recluse. In theaters and through VOD beginning March 5th, 2021.

“My Salinger Year” is set in the 1995. The poet/writer Joanna Rakoff, portrayed by up-and comer Margaret Whalley, takes a chance and leaves her California life and boyfriend behind in a move to New York City, and finds admin work at an older and once prestigious literary agency. The office is run by a tough-but-benign head honcho (Sigourney Weaver), and one of agency’s main clients is none other than a 76-year-old J.D.“Jerry” Salinger, legendary author of “Catcher in the Rye.” Joanna’s adventures and misadventures through that literary filter changes her life profoundly.

After winning a Golden Globe, numerous critics circle accolades as well as SAG Award, Independent Spirit Award and Critics Choice nominations, Minari has taken its success overseas as the A24 American family drama has opened at number one in South Korea.
Minari has banked an estimated $2.2 million in South Korea, earning more than double of Raya and the Last Dragon in the marketplace. It is the biggest opening in the territory for an American film since Soul which earned $2.5M.
The Lee Isaac Chung-directed film starring Steven Yeun is in good company as it has outgrossed the total cumulative gross in South Korea of previous Oscar contenders like The Favourite ($1.3M) and Spotlight ($2.1M). It is also on the way to surpass Green Book’s total gross of $3M.

It’s a very different landscape this week than it was a year ago, just before the pandemic forced cinemas to close around the country. Still, with New York cinemas cautiously reopening this week and many other markets determined to bring moviegoing back, the studios and indie distributors alike are bringing many of their long-delayed releases onto screens, albeit in an entirely new way.
For contrasting examples, look at how two of the majors are handling what were intended to be family film tentpoles: Paramount decided to bypass theaters entirely with “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run,” using the title to launch its new subscription service, Paramount Plus. Disney tested a similar approach with “Mulan” late last summer, and now unveils its latest animated princess movie, “Raya and the Last Dragon” — though that label disguises the many ways in which this one advances the formula — both in theaters and...

Raise High the Roofbeams, Cinema: Falardeau’s Warm Homage Clangs Carpe Diem
“I think that one of these days…you’re going to find out where you want to go. And then you’ve got to start going there” is one of the myriads of quotable references in cult American writer J.D. Salinger’s seminal 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye. It’s also the throughline in director Philippe Falardeau’s latest film, My Salinger Year, based on a 2014 memoir by Joanna Rakoff, which details her short but meaningful tenure working as an assistant to a noted literary agent in mid-90s New York.…...

Nearly a year after closing its physical location, New York City’s IFC Center is preparing to finally reopen on Friday, March 5. The theater has announced a range of new safety measures along with new releases and several screening series. The arthouse venue first shut its doors on March 13, 2020 as early lockdown measures called for the closure of a variety of cultural institutions. In late February, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that New York City movie theaters had permission to reopen at 25 percent capacity and with a maximum of 50 people allowed per screen. Other areas of the state reopened months ago.
While the state has enacted a number of guidelines for reopening theaters, IFC Center has added additional safety measures, including mandatory mask-wearing at all times, no concession sales, and no eating and drinking allowed in theaters. Its five screens will also feature reserved seating (with six feet between...

The first two months of 2021 have brought no shortage of compelling, even great, movies and TV series but in March we’re getting some full-on events. A big, new animated Disney movie! Eddie Murphy returns to one of his most famous roles! Godzilla fights King Kong! Zack Snyder fights the limitations of a theatrical running time! It’s madness in the month of March! (If only there was some kind of pithy phrase that could be used to describe such a thing).
March will also see the departure of a...

Margaret Qualley and Sigourney Weaver star in the new trailer for My Salinger Year, out March 5th.
Based on the 2014 memoir of the same name, Qualley stars as Joanna Rakoff, who leaves graduate school and moves to New York City to become a writer. She gets hired as an assistant at a literary agency, where she reports to Margaret, played by Weaver. (Weaver’s character is a demanding boss, but not nearly as terrible as her character in 1988’s Working Girl.)

"You keep saying you want to write - but you work long hours for other authors." IFC Films has unveiled a new official trailer for the US release of My Salinger Year, a quirky new literary drama from Quebecois filmmaker Philippe Falardeau. This premiered at last year's Berlin Film Festival and is now opening in March. Based on the international best-selling novel, My Salinger Year follows Joanna a young aspiring writer who lands a job at J.D. Salinger's literary agency in New York City. She is assigned the tedious task of responding to the piles of fan mail that Salinger receives. Starring Margaret Qualley as Joanna, Sigourney Weaver as her boss, and a small cast including Douglas Booth, Seána Kerslake, Brían F. O'Byrne, Théodore Pellerin, Yanic Truesdale, Hamza Haq, and Colm Feore. It's a solid film about the relentless passion of writers. Here's the second trailer (+ ...

It’s been a good few years for Margaret Qualley. Breaking out in “The Leftovers,” she’s since caught the eye of Spike Jonze (“Kenzo World“), Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood“), Netflix (“Io” opposite Anthony Mackie), FX (“Fosse/Verdon“), Tim Sutton (“Donnybrook“), Claire Denis and has amassed a nice little career for herself that has come close to peaking yet.
