While Madre may only be his second feature film to date, writer/director Aaron Burns is no stranger to the world of horror, or indie filmmaking for that matter. His credits include providing visual effects expertise on projects like Planet Terror, Machete, and The Green Inferno (on which he also was in charge of second unit photography and even played the character of Jonah, who was eaten by cannibals in a glorious frenzy of brutality), and he has also worked as a camera operator on Aftershock and played supporting roles in both The Stranger and Knock Knock.

While at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, Daily Dead caught up with Burns to talk about his disturbing take on parental paranoia. A new teaser trailer for Aaron Burns' Madre, which recently made its world premiere at SXSW, warns that for one mother with a baby on the way, the terror is not only close to home, but inside it.

He’s definitely built a new network of actors and associates, and has been involved himself as actor, producer, and director in films like “The Stranger”, “The Green Inferno”, and “Aftershock”. All have interesting premises, and how well they are executed is left to the discretion of the viewer.

Knock, Knock is his most mainstream project due to the high profile casting of Keanu Reeves. It’s quite a pairing of two film professionals that elicit reactions of either fervent disdain or a passionate defense of their misunderstood talents. I’m neutral as I think most should be. I don’t like everything they do,...

Eli Roth means many things to many people. Some see him as one of the saviours of modern horror. Some see him as a detriment to the genre. For me personally, I think he’s a fantastic director. Cabin Fever knew exactly what it was and had horrible things happening to purposefully unlikable characters. Hostel played a part in bringing shock and gore to the unprepared mainstream audience and Hostel 2 was in a lot of ways a love letter to Italian exploitation of the 70′s and 80′s. That being said, 2015 hasn’t been a good year for him in terms of directorial output. I was so excited for both The Green Inferno and Knock Knock, but found both films to be Roth at his worst.

The Stranger comes to us as the latest vampire film to never admit it’s Actually a vampire film, because labeling yourself as a “vampire movie” just isn’t cool anymore. I’m sorry – if your character hates the sun, drinks blood and is immortal, he or she is a vampire. Deal with it.

While filmmaker Guillermo Amoedo proves to have a keen cinematic eye, this nightmarish infection thriller ends up being a big ol’ bowl of Meh. Presented by horror maestro Eli Roth, this Chilean thriller does have the atmospheric chills of a good mysterious-drifter-fueled caper, but some transitional techniques struggle to make Amoedo’s work flow seamlessly for international audiences. It’s a shame when audio dubbing reflects negatively on a cinematic watch, and while it’s something we try to ignore, one can’t help but be taken out of the fantasy on screen by voices that clearly don’t belong.

When a film gets the Eli Roth stamp of approval, it is likely to draw notice. Stranger Danger: Roth & Amoedo Unveil Derivative Inclinations

Director Eli Roth continues his collaboration with the South American crew from Aftershock (2012), by producing writer Guillermo Amoedo’s sophomore directorial effort, The Stranger. The title is the filmmaker’s English language debut, previously helming a 2010 film Retorno. Unfortunately, the final result is about as mundane as its nebulous title would seem to indicate, slapped into a narrative as familiar as it is illogical. Still, technically speaking, it’s packaged better than some recent titles released from IFC Midnight (the 2013 Jeff Fahey starrer Beneath comes to mind). Those hoping for a dash of Roth’s predilection for intense splashes of violence may be disappointed, as Amodeo’s somber slow-burn never finds any such spark.

Indie German distributor Tiberius Film has acquired Ezna Sand’s Chloe & Theo, starring Dakota Johnson.

The film centres about the friendship between a young New Yorker and an Inuit environmental activist (Theo Ikummaq) and also stars Mira Sorvino.

Also on Tiberius’s slate are two horror films produced by Eli Roth - The Stranger, directed by Guillermo Amoedo, about a Canadian village doomed by the arrival of a stranger and Clown, directed by Jon Watts, in which a clown costume turns a well-meaning father into a coldblooded killer.

Park City - Sundance saw the debut of not one but two films that both fit the broad definition of a "horror film," each with decidedly strong ideas about gender politics, but only one of the two seems to me to be genuinely worthwhile. Eli Roth has become defined largely by the excesses of his films, and I'm sure that's perfectly fine with him. Hostel director Eli Roth has launched a Vine contest online to scare up new international talent, with the grand prize winner getting a shot at developing an original idea with Roth and Chronicle/The Blacklist producers Davis Entertainment. “I wanted to create a global contest that anyone with a smart phone can enter,” he said Wednesday. “You don’t need a big budget or stars or makeup effects, and with the time limit you have to be creative. Eli Roth's The Stranger will have its World Premiere in Austin, Texas, at Fantastic Fest. The fun kicks off September 19th, 2014. Directed by Guillermo Amoedo, the scriptwriter of Aftershock (2012), The Stranger is a surreal tale of one man searching for his father. This mysterious tale stars Luis Gnecco ("Narcos"), Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, and Aaron Burns. The film's first blood-soaked trailer is here. The story begins with Peter. Peter (Nicolás Durán) was raised without a father. But, Peter seeks him out anyways. Now, Peter must deal with a man, who is part monster and part something else. And, this creature is hell-bent on destroying Peter's hometown and his ambitions of a reunion. The trailer for The Stranger is all over the place. The clip shows snippets of bloodied characters and others undergoing hospital treatment. But, what is going on? Story details are few in this disturbing trailer, which horror fans can find below.

In The Town That Dreaded Sundown, a copycat of the Phantom Killer who struck 66 years ago reignites the Moonlight Murders in a small Texas town. And in Horns, a man suspected of killing his girlfriend wakes up to find horns jutting from his forehead, thus bringing a little hell on Earth. These two films are among those joining the 10th anniversary celebration of Austin’s Fantastic Fest.

The tenth annual Fantastic Fest kicks off in Austin TX in just over a week, and we will once again be present to cover the festival. We are excited to announce the final wave of programming as well as many guest appearances including James Gunn, Edgar Wright, Nicolas Winding Refn, and Ti West. This programming wave might be the best yet. Here’s the final list of films being screened this year.

Radius-twc’s Salma Hayek action thriller Everly will make its world premiere this month at Fantastic Fest, the genre fest announced today along with its final batch of high profile titles and filmmaker guests. Joining the Joe Lynch-directed pic in Austin will be Blumhouse and MGM/Orion’s horror remake The Town That Dreaded Sundown, Radius-twc’s Cannes horror pick-up It Follows, Picturehouse’s The Guest, and Dimension/Radius’ Daniel Radcliffe starrer Horns.

Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn will moderate the world premiere of David Yarovesky’s The Hive, while Nicolas Winding Refn will host a screening of recently restored The Astrologer and appear in his wife Liv Corfixen’s My Life Directed By Nicolas Winding Refn, a documentary filmed during the making of Only God Forgives.
