Shah Rukh Khan’s action thriller “Jawan” has shattered the star’s own Bollywood opening day record.

“Jawan” is produced by Gauri Khan and Gaurav Verma for Red Chillies Entertainment. It opened on Thursday and its Hindi-language version grossed $9.4 million in India, with a further $1.3 million from Tamil and Telugu-language dubbed versions, according to numbers provided to Variety by Red Chillies. Including overseas collections, “Jawan” enjoyed a $15.6 million opening day.

Shah Rukh Khan’s “Pathaan,” which released in January, was the previous record holder for a Hindi-language film, grossing $8.32 million in India and a further $4.5 million in overseas territories on its first day in cinemas, for a worldwide gross total of $12.7 million.

“Jawan” is directed by Atlee, who previously delivered a trio of Tamil-language blockbusters starring Vijay – “Theri” (2016), “Mersal” (2017) and “Bigil” (2019). The “Jawan” cast also includes Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra and Ridhi Dogra, with Deepika Padukone in a cameo.

Karnataka has also given a good contribution but it is primarily the Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu states.”

Exclusive: Lacking big South Indian releases on the scale of Rrr and the K.G.F. franchise, India’s box office was down by 15% in the first half of 2023, compared to the same period last year, pulling in $592.68M (Rs48.68Bn), according to figures from India’s Ormax Media.

Yash Raj Films’ Hindi-language action pic Pathaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, was the highest-grossing film in India during this period, taking $78.65M and accounting for 13% of overall box office. It was followed by multi-lingual action film Adipurush, which grossed $40.54M, and Hindi drama The Kerala Story with $32.02M.

Both Adipurush and The Kerala Story were endorsed by India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (Bjp) but both have proved controversial. Adipurush, based on Indian epic Ramayana, crashed at the box office after a strong start with audiences criticizing its VFX, as well as its treatment of one of Hinduism’s most important texts.

JR30, the upcoming Tamil film starring Jayam Ravi in the lead role, has resumed its shooting in Yercard, Tamil Nadu. The film, directed by Rajesh, is a comedy entertainer with Priyanka Arul Mohan as the female lead. The film also features Vtv Ganesh and Natty in supporting roles.

JR30 is produced by Screen Scene Media Entertainment, which is also producing Jayam Ravi’s Agilan. The film has music by Harris Jayaraj, who is collaborating with Jayam Ravi after 10 years. The film will have a mass opening song, which will be shot massively with signature steps. The song shoot is pending and will be completed in 20 days.

Prime Video India has revealed a blockbuster lineup of Indian and international titles ahead of Prime Day 2023 on July 15 and 16. The lineup includes the Hindi-language version of “Ponniyin Selvan 2,” starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, “Babylon,” headlined by Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, Gerard Butler thriller “Kandahar” and Nawazuddin Siddiqui‘s Hindi-language drama-comedy “Tiku Weds Sheru.”

Chennai, May 2 (Ians) Fans of star Karthi flew down from Japan to see his latest release ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’ with Tamil audience. However, the large-hearted actor welcomed them home to interact with them.

Mumbai, May 1 (Ians) Mani Ratnams magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan: 2, which released recently and also had a special screening attended by the whos who of the Indian film industry, is doing what its predecessor did back in September 2022 – working wonders at the box-office.

The film, which released on April 28, has so far minted Rs 150 crore at the global box office. Film trade analyst Ramesh Bala shared the update on the film’s collection in a tweet. He tweeted: “Ponniyin Selvan 2 has crossed Rs 150 crore gross at the worldwide box office in 3 days… (sic)”.

The film is having a great run at the North American box-office as it made over $3 million, around Rs 24 crore in just three days, according to production house Lyca Productions.

The past four weekends at the box-office have belonged to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which held the top spot of the box-office weekend again this week by nearly $28 million.

With $40.0 million over its fourth weekend in release, The Super Mario Bros. Movie lifted its overall total to $490.0 million. Standing tall in second place was Evil Dead Rise, which added $12.2 million in its second weekend of release to brings its cumulative total to $44.4 million. Meanwhile, debuting in third place was Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret with $6.8 million. John Wick: Chapter 4 held its ground in fourth place with $5.0 million to show for its sixth weekend in release, bringing its total to $176.2 million. Mani Ratnam’s larger-than-life epic recreation of Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan is concluding. Part one of the two-part movie was received with great admiration for sticking to the plot points in the book. Though I have not read the book myself, the movie as a screenplay did justice to all the characters and kept me hooked till the end. With Part 2 just a few days away from release, it is interesting to see all the characters coming back to life in the grandest manner possible. Mani Ratnam’s eye for detail must be acknowledged here, and the first movie left quite an impact on me as a cinephile and a sucker for historical fiction. New Delhi, April 19 (Ians) Tamil superstar Vikram, who plays the 10th-century Chola prince Aditha Karikalan in the ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ movies (Part 2 is releasing on April 28), recalled how it was difficult to do action scenes and ride a horse at full gallop outfitted in heavy armour made with leather and wearing period jewellery.

In an interaction with the media in the Capital on Tuesday, Vikram said: “It is very rare for men to worry about hair, jewellery, ear rings and all. We will never envy the heroines again. Mani sir [the film’s director, Mani Ratnam] wanted everything to look real, so we wore leather armour, which bruised us when we were doing the stunts.

“And then, horse riding was tough for both Karthi and me as we have back problems. We had major issues for three months. ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ was not as easy as shooting for any other film.”

In the process, however, Trisha and Jayam Ravi, who play key characters in the film, have lost their blue tick from their respective Twitter handles.

Well, it happened when they changed their Twitter handle names to their characters’ names. So, Jayam Ravi changed his handle name to Arunmozhi Varman, who became the famous Rajaraja I, and Trisha to Kundavai, elder sister of the future emperor.
