Everyone knows about "Pokémon" and Ash Ketchum's 25-year journey to becoming a true Pokémon Master. But just two short years after "Pokémon" began airing and sparked a global cultural phenomenon known as Pokémania, along came another anime about kids befriending small pocked-sized monsters that could evolve and fight other monsters. That anime is "Digimon," and for many '90s kids, it was the far superior show.

The reason is simple: when it comes to anime shows for kids, few seemed as profound or had a story as relatable and meaningful as that of "Digimon Adventure." Released in 1999, at a time when the computer era was reaching new heights and internet use was becoming increasingly common, "Digimon" taught kids important life lessons. It treated them as being mature enough to handle complex and dark subjects, like saying goodbye to friends and childhood itself, as well as many a traumatic character death scene.

The Fate series by Type-Moon is built around the dramatic Holy Grail Wars. These intense battles bring together Masters, skilled wizards, and Servants, who are the spirits of legendary heroes. Under the creative direction of Takashi Takeuchi and writer Kinoko Nasu, the franchise began with the visual novel Fate/Stay Night.

Since then, it has expanded into prequels, sequels, parodies, and adaptations, all connected by the iconic ‘Fate’ name. Anime has become the most popular way to experience this franchise, and it’s exciting to report about a new addition to the Fate anime world.

The main focus of Type-Moon’s Fate series is the Holy Grail Wars, which are battles for the Holy Grail between Masters (talented wizards) and Servants (incarnations of called-upon heroic spirits). The series was developed under the artistic supervision of Takashi Takeuchi and guided by Kinoko Nasu.

The visual novel Fate/Stay Night served as the inspiration for the franchise, which includes prequels, sequels, parodies, and adaptations, all connected by the prefix “Fate.” Due to its enormous popularity, the franchise has spawned numerous well-known anime adaptations and developed into successful video games.

The anime adaptation is the most famous iteration of the original works, and we are happy to report that a new addition to the anime canon is coming later this year. There is also a free surprise for all the lucky viewers who are inside the region-locked release of the free episode of the latest Fate anime series, Fate/strange Fake.

Few people have been around the Digimon franchise as long as Hiromi Seki. A producer at Toei Animation, she’s been involved with Digimon since 1999’s Digimon Adventure and has seen it evolve through many series and generations of both fans and characters. I was able to interview her at the 2024 New York Comic-Con where we talked about the early days of the digital monsters, the reason why the characters continue to resonate with fans, and even got a glimpse into the difference between producing a Digimon series and a Digimon film. Toei Animation announced at New York Comic Con 2024 today that a new music video, titled Digimon Adventure -Beyond- , is set to be released in March 2025 at Digimon Con as the final part of the celebrations. Fantasy action movie “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” retook the top spot at the mainland China box office from Studio Ghibli animation title “The Boy and the Heron” during the latest weekend.

“Godzilla x Kong” recorded earnings of $7.3 million (RMB51.5 million) between Friday and Sunday, a 32% week-on-week drop, according to data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway. But it returned to the top spot on the box office charts in its fourth weekend of release and overtook “The Boy and the Heron” in the process. It has been known for a while that the Blu-ray edition of the Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning movie will come out on May 29, 2024 in Japan, and while some fans had been worried about a potentially long(er) wait for the US release, we can confirm that the movie will be released not long after the Japanese edition. Political drama thriller “12.12: The Day” dominated the South Korean box office for a second weekend with a $13 million haul.

Its second weekend outing topped its first session, when it earned $11.2 million, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). And the film (aka “Seoul Spring”) increased its share of the weekend’s total cinema market to a crushing 81%.

Separately, ComScore calculated that the film’s single country receipts made it the seventh highest grossing film in the world over the weekend.

After two weekends on release, “12.12: The Day” has garnered $34.2 million, making it already the sixth ranking film in Korea this year and the third biggest Korean-produced picture. On this track, it will overtake “Smugglers” before the next weekend.

Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning reveals the true reason for the existence of DigiDestined in the Adventure continuity, showing that it was created by Ukkomon rather than occurring naturally. The concept of DigiDestined being artificially created devalues the friendships between humans and Digimon, as they are essentially compelled to bond with each other. Despite the dark twist, the main characters maintain that their friendships with Digimon are genuine and not contingent on Ukkomon's powers.

The Beginning is the latest story to explore the time between MaloMyotismon’s defeat in Digimon Adventure 02 and the epilogue that took place 25 years later. This story, in particular, focuses on the first DigiDestined in the Adventure continuity, so it was all but guaranteed to have a major impact on Adventure’s lore.

"Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning" begins, like all good "Digimon" stories should, with Maurice Ravel's "Boléro." The track starts playing as a giant Digi-egg appears floating above Tokyo Tower. Except, there's not much in terms of fighting. There are no Dark Masters threatening to destroy the world.
