You know you’re in for a good time when a trio of nuns turn to the genial farmer who greets them one morning with the retort, “Don’t fucking talk to us!” That’s the underlying charm of “The Little Hours,” in which every joke stems from people talking the last way you’d expect of them. Matching a crackling wit with the absurd dissonance of time and place found in the best of Monty Python and Mel Brooks, “Little Hours” is so eager to please that its one-note humor lands with ease.
Writer-director Jeff Baena’s improv-laden twist on “The Decameron,” in which wily 13th-century nuns speak in raunchy contemporary dialogue and engage in sexual deviance, milks its premise for as many jokes as possible and then keeps going, with uneven but mostly hilarious results. Overall, it’s a perfectly satisfying snapshot of subversive comedy that delivers where it counts.

Jon Cryer was on Howard Stern Tuesday morning to promote the paperback edition of his 2015 memoir So That Happened, a book that laid bare a number of juicy details from his life in the Hollywood trenches. After breaking through as the lovable "Duckie" in Pretty in Pink, Cryer's career went into virtual freefall as his next several films -- including the legendary flop Superman IV: The Quest for Peace -- tanked at the box office. His fortunes turned only when he booked the soon-to-be-mega-hit series Two and a Half Men in 2003, but the years in between were filled with major missed opportunities and various other career disappointments -- by his own admission, he worked just three weeks as an actor over a three-year period. So what dirt did he have to spill during the Stern Show sit-down? Below I've rounded up the juiciest portions of the interview, from his Pretty in Pink...

After sixteen films, Pixar might finally be facing one of its first misfires with Variety reporting that the recently released "The Good Dinosaur" is "shaping up to be Pixar's first box office failure."
With a production budget of $200 million and a further $150 million spent on marketing, analysts have indicated the film has to make $500 million at the global box-office to break even theatrically.
At present, the film has made just $131.3 million globally and is already fading faster than Pixar's other fare in the markets it has already opened in. Scoring soft reviews, it also opened to just $39.1 million in its initial weekend before dropping by more than 60% in its second weekend. Most Pixar's fall less than 50% in the same period.
Mkm Partners analyst Erik Handler says: "It's not resonating like a typical Pixar film. It's on a path where they're going to need home entertainment to drive profitability. Usually with Pixar,...

In a mundane hospital hallway, fine arts photographer Nicolas, epileptic since childhood, falls for the aloof Isabel, unaware she is visiting her suicidal mother. The narrative begins through Nicolas's lens then cuts back to follow Isabel prior to their meeting. Their stories merge as they're suddenly engaged in a highly charged relationship. When the intense getting acquainted period wanes, it seems worth attempting to transcend respective flaws and demons, yet commitment is not something that comes easy to either of these resolutely independent people. David Krumholtz is poised to do a real number on us, playing a 72-year-old Jewish grandmother in an IFC pilot.
IFC announced on Wednesday that it has commissioned a presentation (i.e. a whittled-down pilot) for Gigi’s Bucket List, which follows the titular septuagenarian from Boca Raton, Fla. as she pursues everything she deprived herself of throughout her life, after discovering millions in her dead husband’s bank account.
Krumholtz will serve as an executive producer on the project alongside Grandma’s House Entertainment’s Ben Newmark and Dan Newmark, Ricky Mabe and Zach Golden. The presentation will film later this year,...

The Good Wife is recruiting a noted Numb3rs cruncher to (presumably) help Alicia win that coveted State’s Attorney post.
TVLine has learned exclusively that David Krumholtz is joining CBS’ marquee drama in the potentially recurring role of Josh, a top campaign specialist hired by Alicia’s manager, Jonathan (Steven Pasquale).
One part Hollywood and two parts political, Josh is known as a master of negative campaigning (a role first teased in this week’s Ask Ausiello). He also believes candidates should just shut up and do what the professionals say, so his interactions with Alicia should be hysterical.

Arrow Season 3, Episode 1 “The Calm”
Story by Greg Berlanti & Andrew Kreisberg
Teleplay by Marc Guggenheim & Jake Coburn
Directed by Glen Winter
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm Et on The CW
When “The Calm” begins, things are going pretty well for Starling City’s favorite vigilante: The Arrow is winning awards from the city (given by none other than newly-appointed Captain Lance), bad guys are being ticked off one by one with ease; simply put, everything is good for Oliver Queen, even though his family’s company is about to be sold from underneath him. But as the title ominously suggests, peace in Starling City was not built to last: and as Arrow begins to set up shop for the various stories of the season, “The Calm” delivers an unsettling, surprisingly brutal episode about identity and family, an hour that appears to catalyze a number of ambitious stories for Arrow‘s third season.

In 2012, CBS premiered a new show about two odd-couple male pals. It was called Partners, and on the surface, it seemed to have everything going for it—a prime slot following How I Met Your Mother, a great pedigree courtesy of two ’90s sitcom wizards (it was created by Max Mutchnick and David Kohan of Will & Grace fame), two charismatic stars (Michael Urie and David Krumholtz). Even so, Partners failed to gain traction. Critics griped that its old-fashioned jokes were tired rather than appealingly retro; just a few weeks into the 2012-2013 TV season, it became one of the first shows to get the ax.

The first half of 22 Jump Street relies largely on making jokes about how it's a sequel. These "jokes" are wedged directly into the film's plot by way of comments on a bigger budget and how they should do everything the same. It's a level of self-awareness that has become quite regular in today's movies, and worked well on a smaller scale in the first movie, in an attempt to divert your attention from the fact what you're watching isn't only unnecessary, but not really all that good either. The second half of 22 Jump Street attempts to be funny by suggesting this sequel has now gone over budget and they're going to have to think outside the box to complete their movie -- excuse me, complete their investigation. The jokes throughout both halves rely heavily on gay innuendo, playing off the fact police officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are partners.

What a difference a year makes.
Last year at this time, we were excited that actor Michael Urie was going to be back on our televisions in the CBS sitcom, Partners. Unfortuantely the series premiered last fall to not-so-great reviews and low ratings, so CBS pulled it quickly.
Not one to be down and out for long, Urie is busy promoting his directorial film debut, He’s Way More Famous Than You, which was written by Halley Feiffer and Urie’s partner Ryan Spahn and co-stars Jesse Eisenberg, Vanessa Williams, Mamie Gummer, Ben Stiller and Ralph Macchio. The former Ugly Betty star also is wowing audiences off-Broadway with his one-man show Buyer & Cellar. The Jonathan Tollins play about a young man who takes a job at Barbra Streisand‘s underground personal mall (and meets the lady herself) did so well in its initial run that it’s moving to a larger theater beginning next month.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the fourth announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on CBS.
The king of the networks easily remains in charge despite "Elementary" being their only fresh hit of last season's new shows. The network's line-up remains fairly stable with only a few key moves such as Thursday being expanded to include two hours of comedy programming, and "Hawaii Five-0" moving to Fridays.
Several other pilots didn't make the cut this week including the series sequel to the "Beverly Hills Cop" movies, a TV version of the comedy "Bad Teacher", the "NCIS" mobile spin-off "NCIS: Red," a procedural based on Leif G.W. Persson's literary homicide detective Everett Backstrom, the Frank Marshall-produced political thriller "The Ordained" about a priest turned lawyer trying to save his sister from assassination,...

New York — The slow, lingering demise of "Smash" has felt more like a punch to the gut to the folks on Broadway.
The TV series about the making of a big stage musical came with a flurry of attention and some big names: Steven Spielberg, Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston. It was going to be a valentine to Broadway.
Sometimes, though, love letters get sent back.
After a first season with a healthy-sized audience averaging 7.7 million viewers, it returned this year to such dismal ratings it was banished to Saturday night. It won't be back for a third season.
But while TV was finally focusing on Broadway, plenty of stage veterans jumped to TV during the two-year run of "Smash." Some flamed out, some are holding on and some still hope:
_ Three-time Tony winner Sutton Foster's show about ballerinas, "Bunheads," has been picked up for a second season on ABC Family.

It's been a rough end to what started out as a record-breaking season for openly gay characters on the small screen. After a 2012-13 season that featured a record number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters on TV, this past week's wave of cancellations may drastically alter those statistics. Gone are shows that featured prominent gay story lines including NBC's The New Normal and CBS' Partners. This TV season started off with two promising gay-centric shows, the CBS broad sitcom throwback Partners, and NBC’s The New Normal. Both shows had a strong pedigree, with Will & Grace creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnik helming the CBS comedy, and juggernaut Ryan Murphy bringing us the NBC show.
Unfortunately, Partners was slow out of the gate, and when ratings didn’t improve, it was cancelled after six episodes. The New Normal (which is frankly, a better show), was given a full season pickup, but also struggled mightily in the ratings, even as it improved in quality over its freshman year.
In sad but unsurprising news, today NBC officially pulled the plug on the show. Unless another network picks it up (which is unlikely), we won’t get to see how new dads Bryan and David cope with newborn Sawyer, and The New Normal will officially become another show that was Gone Too Soon.

Krumholtz will play a very close pal to Ellie Kemper‘s Brenda, a 31-year-old who does her own thing. He’ll appear as a guest star in the pilot; if the project goes to series, there’s a good chance he’ll be back.

Updated: Comedy TV writer Lester Lewis, who worked on The Office, died last night. He was 46. Lester most recently wrote and executive produced a “shortcom” project for Fox starring Michael Kosta, which the two co-created. It is eyed for the network’s summer Short-Com Comedy Hour series. Earlier this season, Lewis worked as a consulting producer on David Kohan and Max Mutchnick’s CBS comedy series Partners, having previously served as co-executive producer on Kohan and Mutchnick’s NBC series Four Kings. “We are devastated by the loss of this incredible man and brilliant writer,” Kohan and Mutchick said. “We had the privilege of working with him on two shows. They were both joyous experiences. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife and children at this time.” Lewis was a consulting producer on NBC’s Emmy-winning Office, where he spent four seasons. He started his career on The PJs...

Exclusive: Will & Grace creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick are venturing into cable with half-hour projects at Showtime and TBS. Both shows, which are in development, hail from Kohan and Mutchnick’s KoMut Entertainment and Warner Bros TV/Warner Horizon, where the duo is under and overall deal. At Showtime, Kohan and Mutchnick are in negotiations for an untitled single-camera comedy project — an Upstairs/Downstairs dark comedy that centers on a self-made first generation American billionaire, his family, and the staff that serves them. This marks Kohan and Mutchnick’s first project at Showtime, reuniting them with the cable network’s entertainment president David Nevins. The pair credit Nevis with helping them get Will & Grace on the air as a development executive at NBC where he got behind the duo’s script. At TBS, Kohan and Mutchnick have Clipsters, an ensemble multi-camera workplace comedy set in a hipster barbershop in the not-so-hip town of Worcester,...

Exclusive: Veteran TV comedy writer-producer Max Mutchnick, co-creator of Emmy-winning Will & Grace, has signed with Wme. Since he started his writing career two decades ago, Mutchnick has been partnered with childhood friend David Kohan. For the past 18-plus years, the duo has been represented by Scott Schwartz at Vision Art Management, who signed them in September 1994 after they had been let go from UTA. Schwartz went on to package eight Kohan and Mutchnick series, including Will & Grace and most recently CBS’ Partners. After the end of Partners, Kohan, who remains with Schwartz, and Mutchnick began contemplating their future. While the two continue to work together on several projects, they also will likely be doing projects separately, and Mutchnick’s signing with a new agency reflects that.

Not every new series works out. There are a hundred reasons why a particular sitcom or drama won’t find an audience, but every year many series find themselves canceled early on in their lives. Just such a fate had befallen the CBS comedy Partners, which starred Sophia Bush of One Tree Hill fame. I have to give Bush my acknowledgement for making the move from drama to comedy even if it didn’t work out in her favor. It’s smart for actors and actresses to keep things fresh by jumping around and not getting tied down by a particular genre. Bush is apparently continuing with that train of thought as she has been cast in the Hatfields & McCoys drama pilot.
