The 1990s were a golden era for straight-to-video horror films. While these productions often had limited budgets and resources, they compensated with creativity, bold storytelling, and memorable scares. Here’s a countdown of just Some of the straight-to-video horror gems from that decade.
10. Ice Cream Man (1995)
Plot: A deranged ice cream vendor terrorizes a suburban neighborhood.
Why It’s Great: Starring Clint Howard in a wonderfully creepy performance, Ice Cream Man is a cult favorite that blends absurd humor with gruesome horror. Its mix of over-the-top kills and campy charm makes it unforgettable.
9. Ticks (1993)
Plot: Genetically engineered ticks wreak havoc on a group of troubled teens at a wilderness retreat.
Why It’s Great: With impressive practical effects and some genuinely disturbing moments, Ticks delivers gooey creature-feature thrills. Plus, it features a young Seth Green and an unhinged performance by Alfonso Ribeiro.
8. Leprechaun 2 (1994)

Resident Evil star Milla Jovovich is set to headline Protector, a Taken-esque action thriller that Highland Film is pitching to buyers at this year’s American Film Market. It’s officially spooky season, and if you’re looking to watch something a little scarier than love in the afternoon, check out these horror movies and TV shows starring some familiar faces from daytime.
From Drama To Horror
While many soap stars tend to stick to dramas or Hallmark Channel romcoms – find out what soap stars will be on Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas this year – some have branched out to an unexpected genre: horror. If you want to add some familiar faces to a spooky movie night this Halloween, add these to your list of must-watches.
General Hospital
Idle Hands, starring Kelly Monaco
This 1999 horror film stars Devon Sawa and Jessica Alba and follows a teenaged boy who’s hand becomes possessed and goes on a murderous rampage. It certainly didn’t win any Oscars, but it does feature a young Kelly Monaco as one of the victims.

Chuck Russell, director of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob makes his return to the Horror genre with his newest re-imaging Witchboard (2024). The supernatural board-based horror celebrated its world premiere at the 2024 Fantasia Film Festival, where the majority of the film was shot.
Withboard takes inspiration from Kevin Tenney’s original cult classic Witchboard (1986), but expands the story in a time-shifting supernatural freak fest that’s perfect for your next pizza party/Friday night movie marathon We sat down with Russell ahead of the Montreal premiere to chat about the making of the movie, the history of witchcraft, and why he says he’ll never touch a Ouija board….
“The most fun I had was returning to Horror after trying different genres, and just pushing myself towards […] things that I think audiences haven’t seen before.”
Chuck Russell: It’s fun to be back in Montreal.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob director Chuck Russell makes his long-awaited return to horror with Witchboard, a remake of writer/director Kevin S. Tenney’s original 1986 movie that premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival last week.
Madison Iseman (I Know What You Did Last Summer), Aaron Dominguez (Only Murders in the Building), Antonia Desplat (Shantaram) and Charlie Tahan (Ozark) star in the horror movie. Director Chuck Russell co-wrote the script with Greg McKay.
Iseman stars as Emily, a former addict who works with her fiancé Christian (Dominguez) and a group of their friends to open an organic café, refurbishing an old carriage house in New Orleans’ French Quarter. When Emily finds an antique pendulum board, she unwittingly becomes a pawn in a bewitching battle over her soul. It’s a premise that only loosely resembles the original film; Witchboard forgoes the Ouija...

Over one year since the first trailer was released, Witchboard (2024) is releasing to the world, and what better place to premiere than at Fantasia Film Festival? Because not only is this an update to an underrated 80s film, but it’s writer/director Chuck Russell’s return to the genre! After staying away for over 25 years, he’s finally dipping his toes back in. Madison Iseman on the other hand has been final girl many times before and is always a highlight in her various horror projects. So it’s exciting to see them combine forces as a bit of a mixing of the old and new guard.
I hardly ever get nervous for interviews anymore but I have a great deal of respect for both Russell, as well as Iseman, whose career I’ve followed for nearly a decade. And they clearly have a lot of love for Witchboard,...

Plot: Emily and her friends find a Witchboard in the woods. Using it results in deadly consequences. They have to stop it before it’s too late.
Review: Few films in the horror genre are more entertaining than The Blob and A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. They bring a great mix of over-the-top violence with humor. So I was ecstatic to see writer/director Chuck Russell make his return to the genre for the first time in nearly 25 years. Setting his sights on updating the 1986 film Witchboard, which itself was a play on the popular Ouija board, this seems prime for the modern era. So, it’s upsetting for me to say that 2024’s Witchboard is a bit of a mess.
If you’re hoping for some kind of update to the 1986 story, you’re in for disappointment because we’re instead given a story about...

My Witchboard’s back and you’re gonna be in trouble. Hey la, hey la, my Witchboard’s back! The board is back in the new remake Witchboard (2024) from horror legend Chuck Russell, who fans will no doubt remember as the director behind our beloved A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Russell is no stranger to remakes, having also made the jaw dropping The Blob (1988), and his turn here at Kevin Tenney’s Witchboard (1986) is a bewitching re-imagining of the 1980’s cult classic, perfect for your next movie night with friends.
Flipping the board the script on the original, Russell (who as co-wrote the screenplay with Greg McKay) sets the story in modern day New Orleans, using an older round style witchboard rather than the classic Oujia. He also keeps some of the bones and fan favorite moments from the original film (including a rework of the psychic...

Earlier this week, we were devastated to hear that Paul Reubens, the actor and comedian best known for playing the character Pee-wee Herman, had passed away at the age of 70, following a six year private battle with cancer. Among the many people who took to social media to mourn the loss of Reubens was special makeup effects artist Mark Shostrom, whose long list of credits includes The Slumber Party Massacre, The Beastmaster, The Mutilator, From Beyond, Witchboard, Prince of Darkness, Poltergeist III, Phantasm II and III, the first three Nightmare on Elm Street movies, and Evil Dead II. And while paying tribute to Reubens, Shostrom revealed that an iconic effect from Evil Dead II drew inspiration from an iconic effect in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure!
Shostrom said, “Paul Reubens provided huge inspiration for my work on Evil Dead II. I had been watching Pee-wee’s Big Adventure on VHS on repeat while sculpting.

"When police raid a house in El Paso, they find it full of dead Latinos, and only one survivor. He’s known as The Traveler, and when they take him to the station for questioning he tells them those lands are full of magic and talks about the horrors he’s encountered in his long time on this earth, about portals to other worlds, mythical creatures, demons and the undead. Stories about Latin American legends."

Director Chuck Russell wanted to remake Witchboard because he felt he could bring a fresh sensibility to the film and explore the interesting legacy of the Wiccan world. The new version of Witchboard is edgier and features a star-studded cast, including Jamie Campbell Bower, Madison Iseman, Aaron Dominguez, Antonia Desplat, and Charlie Tahan. Russell emphasizes that a good scare in horror movies is all about tension, timing, and payoff, similar to getting a good laugh in a comedy. He hopes to deliver a story, characters, and scares that will excite fans of the original film.
A remake of the 1986 horror classic Witchboard follows engaged couple Emily and Christian. While preparing to open their bistro in the New Orleans French Quarter, the couple stumbles upon a pendulum board, a strange Wiccan artifact. Emily becomes obsessed with the power of the board and its ability to summon spirits, much to Christian's horror.
