“Do you have any pets?” When the FBI called at Reality Winner’s Georgia home in June 2017, the agency didn’t exactly start out playing hardball; in fact it, took the better part of hour even to start getting down to brass tacks with the 25-year-old. We know this because the whole event was recorded on a hidden wire and transcribed as evidence for Winner’s subsequent trial. New York director Tina Satter first fashioned this transcript, with zero embellishment, into a critically acclaimed stage play called Is This a Room in 2019, and in Reality, which premiered in the Berlin Film Festival’s Panorama strand, she expands it into an astonishingly effective docu-drama hybrid.
Reality Winner’s misdemeanor didn’t quite put her in the league of Edward Snowden or Chelsea Manning, and, in a way, Satter’s film leans into that. Many know the name, and perhaps also the...

Dave Schultz set out to make “a vampire picture that wasn’t really a vampire picture” when he wrote Rufus (also known as Hunted). Given other vampire-centered stories at the time, the Canadian filmmaker was sure to include the fundamentals. More specifically, the brooding and beautiful bloodsucker who takes a fierce liking to a human, and […]

Hulu has released its list of content arriving at the streaming service this June, as well as everything that will no longer be available to watch there after June 30.
At the top of the must-watch list is season three of Hulu Original “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which was notably pushed back to a June premiere date in order to ensure it would “maintain the quality it has,” Craig Erwich, Hulu’s Senior Vice President of Originals, said at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour in February. The first three episodes of the new season premiere on Hulu June 5, after which new episodes will be released every Wednesday.
Another Hulu Original of note is “The Weekly” series from The New York Times, coming June 3. Each half-hour episode will feature a Times journalist investigating one of today’s most pressing issues, with new issues being explored each week.

Kate Walsh is no stranger to TV, but she is new to the canon of memorable parents on popular teen series, a group that includes Jim and Cindy Walsh on Beverly Hills, 90210, Lily van der Woodsen and Rufus Humphrey on Gossip Girl and Sandy and Kirsten Cohen on The O.C. Following her tenure as Dr. Addison Montgomery on Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice, as well as roles on Fargo and Bad Judge, the actress is playing Mrs. Baker, mother to Hannah, who has committed suicide, on Netflix’s highly anticipated adaptation of 13 Reasons Why.
Based on the Ya novel by Jay Asher, the series tells the story of Clay Jensen, who returns home after school one day to find 13 cassette tapes recorded by Hannah, setting off a revealing journey about her and her former classmates. Poor Little Rich Girl? Check. Poor Outsider Suddenly Thrown into a World of Excess? Double check. The Royals is everything that's been missing from your life since Gossip Girl and The O.C. ended their respective runs. While there have been worthy contenders to the throne since then (90210, The Carrie Diaries) none have been able to capture that same charm - until now. Funnily enough, E!'s first original scripted series was actually created by Mark Schwahn, of One Tree Hill fame. While The Royals bears little resemblance (if any) to Oth, you can rest assured that one of the...

Vampire stories are almost completely played out these days. Between TV shows and movies, there’s far from a shortage of media about blood-suckers at a viewer’s disposal. But still, that saturation doesn’t mean those stories can’t be entertaining when done well. Dave Schultz’s Rufus isn’t anything revolutionary in terms of vampire movies, but it’s still handled in an interesting way, full of intrigue, mystery, and emotion.
Rufus tells the story of a vampire (Rory Saper) left alone in a small town, trying to fit in and not allow anyone to find out what he is. He is taken in by the sheriff (David James Elliot) and the sheriff’s wife (Kelly Rowan) after his traveling companion is struck by a truck. From there, he begins to become one of the family, making friends with those around him, including a neighborhood girl (Merritt Patterson...

Over a year has passed since we first learned that director David Schultz was working on a vampire movie but Rufus didn't sound like a typical bloodsucker story. Sure, it centers on a 200 year old vampire who looks like a teenager trying to blend into small town life but it also didn't raise the red flags customary with this kind of set-up, mostly because Schultz's earlier film, the coming of age story 45 Rpm, worked so well within familiar ground. It also helped that Schultz was interested in incorporating a bit of comedy into the mix and the melting pot of ideas seems to have paid off. [Continued ...]...

Eventful week. To play catch-up:
The big news that every site reported in a slightly different way is that Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome will be a digital series and a TV film, but not a TV show, at least not one produced by Syfy/Universal Cable Prods. You have probably read the Deadline article by now.
With the possibility that Universal may still shop B&C around, it doesn't sound like they have any immediate plans to make more of it beyond the existing pilot/web series/Mow.
No word yet on a release date, but Battlestar Wiki reports that we'll be seeing Blood & Chrome as a web series first and then as a TV movie.
Doug Drexler posted this the other day (full post at the link):
If sets had been built for this show, it would have cost 6 million easily, instead of only the 2 million it did cost,...
