Matthew McConaughey was in talks to reprise his character role of Dallas for the sequel, but talks fell through because of financial reasons. According to the studio, since winning his Academy Award for Best Actor in Dallas Buyers' Club (2013), McConaughey's pay rate had increased, which is a tactical procedure for an actor to capitalize on his acclaimed success after he just won an Academy Award. This led to the studio optioning to pass on bringing back McConaughey for the sequel.
Alex Pettyfer did not return to reprise his role as Adam. Reports of production from the Magic Mike (2012) revealed that he and Channing Tatum did not get along.
Jada Pinkett Smith's role was originally intended for Jamie Foxx but, to her immense surprise, Channing Tatum asked her to take over Jamie's part in the final hours.
Margot Robbie turned down the role of Zoe due to scheduling conflicts with Focus (2015). Amber Heard was later cast.
