Kalakalappu is a pure laugh riot from start to finish, a comedy that had Tamil audiences in splits and reminded us why Sundar C is the king of chaos-driven humor. Released in 2012, this movie is a masterclass in ensemble comedy, where every actor plays off each other perfectly. With Vimal, Shiva, Santhanam, and Ilavarasan at the helm, this film is packed with punchlines, pratfalls, and endless laughs that somehow get funnier with every watch. And trust me, this is 1000 times better than the sequel!
The story is set in a crumbling restaurant in Kumbakonam, and the setting alone sets the stage for a comedy of errors. Vimal and Shiva play two brothers who inherit this "vintage" hotel, and it's an understatement to say their chemistry is hilarious. Vimal brings his usual charm and sincerity, while Shiva is, as always, effortlessly hilarious with his deadpan expressions and crazy one-liners. Watching them clash and bumble through their attempts to run the hotel is priceless.
Then there's Santhanam, the secret spice to this already brilliant dish. His timing is impeccable, and he's in peak form here, delivering punchlines that hit you out of nowhere. Add Ilavarasan to the mix as the loan shark, and you've got a lineup that leaves no stone unturned when it comes to wringing laughs out of every scene. Together, these four create a comedy rhythm that feels so natural, you almost forget they're acting. They just gel, and it's magic. Especially the Amitabh mama scene.
Unlike the 2016 sequel, which tried way too hard and lacked the original's charm, Kalakalappu nails that perfect balance of humor, chaos, and heart. The jokes are clever, the slapstick is perfectly timed, and the characters are genuinely lovable. From the clever exchanges to the ridiculous situations, it's a laugh-out-loud ride that keeps you grinning long after it's over.
In short, Kalakalappu is a full-on comedy treat. If you're in the mood for laughs, this film is the ultimate pick, and it reminds you why Tamil cinema does comedy like no other!

Sundar C is one of the best directors that Tamil Cinema has ever produced and this film is his second best next to Ullathai Allitha. Although second part of Kalakalappu is good, this one is far better than it. I would say this movie is a teamwork done at its best, with everyone contributing their part exceptionally well. One thing I did not like about this movie is, some of the glamour scenes could have been avoided, as kids cannot be left alone watching this!

Can watch this movie just for the jokes ! Back to back to back to back comedies . Santhanam at his best ... wish he never became a hero , so we could see more of him , in movies like this . Fantastic comedies overall . Shivaaaa ultimate too. I keep seeing comedies in this movie :)
Very funny:) all time favourite!!
loved mokkai shiva and vimal's chemistry
shiva, john vijay, subbu panchu, ilavarasu, santhanam are the funniest:) loved them in this movie:))
anjali and oviya don't really have any role in the movie and there's too much glam scenes in my opinion.
but still a great movie! watch with your family and kids:)
