Halloween Wars has been my favorite Halloween show I look forward to every year. I will tell you though, the last 2 seasons with Zak Bagans was bad, real bad. I couldn't even finish last season. They literally took everything away that made it great. The small scare and big scare are everything. The pumpkin carvings are a must! Don't remove that. Jonathan Bennett is the best host they've ever had and I was so sad they replaced him with the cringe Zac Bagans. Kudos for Halloween Wars to listening to all the reviews here and bringing back the old style of the show. You have made a bunch of viewers very happy. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.
What the heck is going on with this show? No Pumpkins! How can you have a Halloween wars competition without Pumpkin carving... I just don't get it. Also Zack is pathetic he hides in another studio and shows up in a tv screen only it's cheap and tacky and no one associates him with Halloween or at least I don't Aaron is the only reason people watch Ghost Adventures let's be serious. I am not going to watch the remaining episodes as they are terrible this far... so sad you ruined my families favourite Halloween Competition so very sad indeed.
After a while, the pumpkin/cake/sugar work all looks the same, all of which would be barely edible - so maybe one or two episodes at a time just in the spirit of Halloween. Like most Food Network shows, they try to amp up drama before commercials. I.e., a piece falls off - "We're done we're screwed we're going HOME!" - then after the commercial, someone puts the piece back on. Whew!! Another hugely annoying Food Network "thing" is recycling contestants. Each additional outing, they get more into being a STAR and more obnoxious in their interviews. Then of course, everyone is a sore loser at the end, vowing revenge. American reality TV in action.
So glad that they returned to the original format and having Jonathon back as host for Halloween Wars this year!! Sorry, but having Zac Bagans as a guest host who was never in the studio was a bust. Bringing back the Small Scare and the live host is a huge improvement, as is cutting back the amount of babble from the judges throughout the episodes. The emphasis is back on the teams, which is where it all happens. The set definitely has improved since the original series, so this year is probably the best season ever. Thank you, Food Network, for finally getting the recipe right! Please don't mess with perfection!
Halloween Wars is really enjoyable if you're there for the art. The drama in the show..the "tension" amongst the team members and the dramatics from the sugar sculptures that break, etc. is a little bit ridiculous. It's fun to watch, it's just a little annoying at times.

- TriviaFor season 11, the producers to decided to go without pumpkin carvers and sculpting with premade sheet cakes. Instead teams work on one big baked from scratch cake project. Instead of having a tasting element aspect, the cake itself would be sampled by the judges. For season 13 (September 2023), the show kept the set introduced in season 11 but returned to the original competition format and brought back the pumpkin carvers.
