For Ferdinand Bonn, his critical portrayal of the monarch also had a personal meaning. The film's big dictionary of characters (Das große Personenlexikon des Films) says: "It was a belated revenge on Germany's ruler, who once torpedoed Bonn's career, after he reacted with a harsh letter to Wilhelm II's ban on his patriotic stage drama 'Der Junge Fritz' and the verbally attacked Kaiser.
There must have been some problems with this film at the production stage, because of the fact that the original director Richard Oswald withdrew from the project and novice director Willy Achsel took over.
