Brazilian studio Coala Films has boarded the Portuguese animated feature “Una” from Oscar-shortlisted “Percebes” producer Bap – Animation Studios. With the new backing, production is now ready to kick off in the new year.
“Una,” highlighted during a Portuguese Projects Pitch at Annecy last June, marks the feature film debut of David Doutel and Vasco Sá, producers at Bap – Animation Studios whose own shorts as directors, such as “Soot” (2014), “Augur” (2018) and “Garrano” (2022) have earned the duo plaudits around the world.
With “Una,” Doutel and Sá address increasingly urgent social issues, linking the rebellion of young Una against a smoke-belching lithium mine in her village mountain valley to other attempts to push back against the ravages of rampant eco-destructive capitalism around the world.

Colin Firth will headline Lockerbie, a Sky drama series about the real-life airline tragedy that occurred in 1988. Here’s the trailer.
Rightly or wrongly, the British television industry often uses true life tragedies as the basis for drama. As proven with Gwyneth Hughes’ brilliant Mr Bates And The Post Office, such dramas, when done right, can provoke discussion on a national scale.
The latest true-life disaster to make its way to the screen is Lockerbie: The Search For Truth, which chronicles the aftermath of the horrific events of the 21st December 1988, when a bomb caused Pan Am Flight 103 to crash over the Scottish town, killing 270 people.
The synopsis for the five-part series, from Sky itself, reads as follows:
Dr Jim Swire (Colin Firth) and his wife Pam, who tragically lost their daughter in the Lockerbie bombing, have doggedly pursued justice ever since. The series will see Swire nominated spokesperson for...

Annecy, France — José Miguel Ribeiro, Nuno Beato and David Doutel and Vasco Sá, iconic figures in modern-day Portuguese animation, will unveil new projects at this year’s Annecy. They will be joined by newer talents – Vier Nev, behind “A Mind Sang” – João Carrilho, Patrícia Figueiredo and Natália Azevedo Andrade – who together deliver an eloquent snapshot of the burgeoning state of Portuguese animation.
Over the last 30 years, Portuguese animation has won ever more prizes for usually 2D short films of dazzling beauty, experimentation and sometimes social point. The career of Regina Pessoa, who delivers a masterclass at Annecy, is a case in point.
Animation remains in Portugal a vocational passion. In one case in point, Ribeiro, after scoring praise and plaudits with feature film “Nayola,” will present a short film, “The Flower and the Fish,” which marks another new direction in vastly eclectic career.
Yet Portuguese animation is in the throes of industry take-off.

Colin Firth will headline Lockerbie, a Sky drama about the real-life tragedy. Here are some details about the production…
Rightly or wrongly, the British television industry often uses true life tragedies as the basis for drama. As proven with Gwyneth Hughes’ brilliant Mr Bates And The Post Office, such dramas, when done right, can provoke discussion on a national scale.
The latest true-life tragedy to make its way to the screen is Lockerbie, which will chronicle the aftermath of the horrific events of the 21st December 1988, when a bomb caused Pam Am Flight 103 to crash over the Scottish town, killing 270 people.
Scottish playwright David Harrower, whose film Una, based on his play Blackbird, is well worth seeking out, will act as lead writer, with Maryam Hamidi writing an episode. They adapted their scripts from the book The Lockerbie Bombing: A Father’s Search For Justice, which Swire co-wrote with Peter Biddulph.

This article contains mentions of sexual assault and grooming.
May December tackles uncomfortable truths with dark humor, similar to Todd Haynes's previous work, exploring themes of sexual manipulation and scandalous journalism. Other movies, like The Tale and Una, delve into the trauma of grooming, leaving lasting scars on the victims and emphasizing the need for their voices to be heard. Movies such as An Education and Velvet Goldmine also explore complex relationships with age gaps, humanizing the individuals involved and addressing the role of tabloid journalism.
Todd Haynes’s May December ranks among the best movies to tackle themes like sexual manipulation and scandalous journalism, so there are plenty of comparable movies to watch if you like the 2023 drama. With the film addressing particularly discomforting truths with a pinch of dark humor, it is reminiscent of similarly acclaimed movies, including Haynes’s previous work, known for their multi-genre experimentation with such realities.

You're forgiven if Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 1 evokes strong feelings of déjà vu.
After all, the entire plot of the recently concluded Star Trek: Picard Season 3 hinges on stealing a starship. Also, Captain Seven is challenged to coin her engage phrase on Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Episode 10, just like Spock here.
Finally, the ship launching from underground caverns? We've seen that in animated forms on both Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 Episode 7 and Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 Episode 2.
All that being said, familiarity breeds no contempt as we slip into the comfortable, chummy embrace of our pined-for Enterprise ensemble.
With the Season 1 finale leaving us on tenterhooks about Una's fate, the writers subvert expectations by delaying that question by shipping Pike off-site for the entire premiere adventure.
Instead, we bring LA'an back into the fold as her quest to reunite fellow Gorn-surviving girl warrior, Oriana, with...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Episode 3
Like the classic episodes “The Naked Time” or “The Deadly Years,” Strange New Worlds has entered into Star Trek-storytelling mode all about a weird alien virus sweeping the ship. From The Next Generation to Deep Space 9 and beyond, every Trek show needs an episode like this, and in “Ghosts of Illyria,” we get a great one. When a virus that’s transmitted by light starts to make everyone lose it, it’s up to Number One to sort everything out.
“Ghosts of Illyria,” is, arguably, the first big episode to feature Rebecca Romijn’s Una Chin-Riley as the focus of the story. And as such, we get a lot of references to previous moments in Trek canon, many of which directly connect to her backstory, and La’an’s backstory, too. Here’s every...

"He borrowed your Goya to do a bit of good in this world." Pathe UK has released the first official trailer for a kooky British crime comedy titled The Duke, the latest from filmmaker Roger Michell. This first premiered at last year's Venice Film Festival and is opening in cinemas in the UK this September (no US release date has been set yet). In 1961, Kempton Bunton, a 60 year old taxi driver, steals Goya's portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. This is the story of how, why, and who he was. Grace Kinstler headed into the “American Idol” finale on Sunday as one of the frontrunners. Ironically, that may well have been the reason she was eliminated during the three-hour episode, thus missing out on a spot in the Top 2. Perhaps her fans figured she was safe and didn’t cast votes for her during the first part of the show. In our overnight poll, 31% of “American Idol” viewers said Grace Kinstler was robbed of the season 19 win.
Grace’s surprise elimination left Chayce Beckham and Willie Spence battling it out to win season 19. At the end of the night, Ryan Seacrest revealed that Chayce had prevailed over Willie. His edge may well have been the success of his chart-topping single “23,” which he reprised just moments after being declared the season 19 winner.

Early on in the season finale of Sunday night’s (May 23) episode of “American Idol,” judge Luke Bryan informed fellow country singer Chayce Beckham he earned the ultimate prize: a chance for the two of them to go fishing.
“Win or lose, we’re going bass fishing,” Bryan said.
Those plans are now on hold, as the 24-year old Apple Valley, California resident was crowned the show’s 2021 victor.
“Your world is about to change,” judge Katy Perry told the now former forklift driver, who’ll release music via BMG and is Nashville bound.
Beckham was an early favorite in auditions after wowing the judges with a performance of ‘What Brings Life Also Kills” by Kolton Moore and the Clever Few, prompting Perry to remark he sounded like “the heart of America.”
Throughout the competition, Bryan repeatedly emphasized how “cool” Beckham was on stage, at one point going so far...

American Idol has dimmed the lights for the last time this season with the crowning of the franchise’s 19th (!) winner.
Heading into Sunday’s finale, 49 percent of TVLine readers expected Chayce Beckham to be crowned the new Idol, with 28 percent predicting a win for Willie Spence and 22 percent believing that Grace Kinstler had a genuine shot at the title. But those numbers shifted a bit when we asked our readers which finalist they thought deserved to win; Beckham still came out on top, but Spence and Kinstler followed more closely behind.

The final three contestants of “American Idol” Season 19 took the stage one last time on Sunday, May 23 to try to earn enough votes to join the winner’s list. After Chayce Beckham performed The Beatles‘ “Blackbird” live on the big stage, country judge Luke Bryan invited him on the bro-iest of bro dates ever. “Chayce has been kind of teasing about wanting to do some bass fishing one day,” Luke explained to the audience. “So listen, I’m saying it right now, you’ve earned your bass fishing trip with me. Book the date! We got it. Win or lose, we’re going fishing.”
A big smile on his face, Chayce responded, “You just said that on TV!” The Apple Valley, CA native then made some fishing motions with his hands and reeled in Ryan Seacrest, who joined him on stage.

Riz Ahmed is a major force in the Academy Awards race this year for his blistering performance as a metal drummer who begins losing his hearing in “Sound of Metal,” directed by Darius Marder. Recently, the British actor (and musician himself) sat down with IndieWire’s Editor at Large Anne Thompson for a discussion about the movie, and that naturally led him to dig back into some of his past roles.
One he said was particularly revelatory for his course as an actor was Jacques Audiard’s “The Sisters Brothers.” While not a financial success, the western become something of a cult favorite, with Ahmed starring as a man John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix are tasked with killing. Ahmed said that it completely reinvented the kinds of roles he wanted to play.

A politically charged Berlin Film Festival was further enlivened on the third day of the European Film Market by a demonstration targeting Chilean armed forces.
On Saturday, the Martin Gropius Bau, the site of the Efm, saw a group of anonymous protestors unfurl a big banner from one of the market’s upper floors, with activists shouting out, “How can you celebrate Chile when Chile is killing its own people?”
The protests were in response to the festival throwing a large spotlight on Chilean cinema, drama series and documentaries as its Country in Focus this year.
Whether the protestors chose the right target, however, is another matter.
Many of the large delegation of Chilean cineasts and content creators in Berlin for the Focus are fellow protestors. After an official photo is taken Sunday morning of the whole of the Chilean delegation, members will stage their own personal demonstration with posters...

Rainn Wilson has been cast as a series regular in Amazon’s “The Power,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Wilson will play Daniel Dandon, who is being described as “the self-righteous and self-important Governor of Washington and constant thorn in Margot’s [Leslie Mann] side. But when the Day of the Girls arrives, Dandon’s position begins to look decidedly precarious.”
Wilson is also part of Amazon’s upcoming “Utopia,” based on the popular U.K. format and in feature films “Blackbird,” in which he stars opposite Kate Winslet and Susan Sarandon, and “Don’t Tell A Soul,” which will premiere at Tribeca Film Festival. His recent credits include the feature film “Meg” from Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Warner Bros., as well as small screen roles on “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Mom.” He also recently revised his undertaker role of Arthur from “Six Feet Under” in an appearance in “Transparent’s” finale.

Pop culture creates goddesses only to offer them up for sacrifice, and over the course of her career, Kristen Stewart has no doubt gotten close enough to that pyre to smell the brimstone. So she’s a natural to play Jean Seberg in “Seberg,” about the Iowa girl who became an international movie star, only to be targeted and ultimately destroyed by the FBI because of her affiliation with the Black Panthers.
And while “Seberg” is rarely as great as its lead actress, the film does shed light on a tragic corner of American history that’s not discussed nearly enough — the U.S. citizens who had their lives shattered by J. Edgar Hoover’s secret Cointelpro (counter-intelligence program) surveillance that targeted anyone the FBI considered “subversive,” be they Vietnam War protesters, black or indigenous activists, even environmentalists.

Kristen Stewart is earning rave reviews for her return to studio tentpoles in Elizabeth Banks’ “Charlie’s Angels” reboot, but cinephiles won’t have to wait long to catch the actress’ return to indies. Stewart is the lead of the Jean Seberg biographical drama “Seberg,” opening in theaters this December from Amazon Studios. The film is the latest psychological drama from “Una” director Benedict Andrews. “Seberg” made its world premiere out of competition at the 2019 Venice Film Festival.

Amazon Studios is dating Benedict Andrews’ Jean Seberg biopic “Seberg,” starring Kristen Stewart as the Hollywood actress turned political target of the title, for award season prime time on December 13. (Deadline has the scoop.)
Poorly reviewed out of the film’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Andrews’ true-to-life drama about Seberg’s frantic descent into paranoia after becoming the target of an FBI counter-intelligence probe in the late 1960s faces an uphill box-office climb during the noisy awards fray; Amazon is more likely branding the title for eventual Prime availability.
