Indie horror comedy “Glue Trap” has been acquired by Gravitas Ventures following a film festival run that began with its premiere last year at Dances With Films.

The film, written and directed by “Succession” and “Euphoria” writer and consultant Justin Geldzahler, will be released on digital and VOD in the U.S. on Dec. 17.

Starring Obie-winner Brittany Bradford and Isaac W. Jay, the movie follows a couple during a last minute trip to a cabin. “But when an obnoxious third [Gloria Bangiola] wheel arrives,” the logline reads, “they worry their relationship may be in trouble.”

The film is produced by Geldzahler, Christopher Fox, Norris Guncheon and executive produced by Sara McFarlane.

“With the holidays approaching, I’m excited to release our film about loved ones driving each other insane while isolated from an increasingly uncomfortable world,” Geldzahler said in a statement Monday.

Gravitas Ventures, an Anthem Sports & Entertainment company, has acquired the U.S. rights to Connie Cocchia’s coming-of-age drama “When Time Got Louder.” The film will be released on Nov. 17 in select theaters and on VOD.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to horror-thriller “Thirst.”

The film marks the directorial debut of musician Eric Owen, drummer with alternative rock duo Black Pistol Fire.

Written by Owen, in the film, insomnia spreads in a small town, causing fear and panic. As the situation becomes dire, two couples find salvation on an abandoned ranch until nefarious characters descend upon the land, claiming it as their own, and chaos ensues.

The film stars Brian Villalobos (HBO’s “Love and Death”) and Lori Kovacevich (“But Humble Sinners”). Josh Taylor produced alongside Owen.

The deal was negotiated between Glen Reynolds of Circus Road Films and Mackenzie Maguire of Gravitas Ventures. A release is planned for the fall.

The awards, known as the Razzies, take place the weekend of the Academy Awards and celebrate the very ‘worst’ in film.

While many of the films nominated did not make it near this year’s Oscars, there is some crossover, with Ana de Armas’s Marilyn Monroe drama Blonde picking up the gong for Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay. De Armas is nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars for her performance in the film.

Company owner Anthem Sports & Entertainment is seeking a new Gravitas head.

Nolan Gallagher is to step down as CEO of Gravitas Ventures, the US video on demand and theatrical distributor he founded in 2006.

Anthem Sports & Entertainment, the TV network and sports group that bought Gravitas in 2021, said it is working with Nolan and has retained an advisor to find a new head for the company.

Nolan, who will leave Gravitas at the end of March, said he will now focus on his co-ownership of a new Major League Soccer to play in Cleveland, the city to which Gravitas relocated...

Nolan Gallagher’s time running Gravitas Ventures will soon come to an end.

After 17 years, the founder and CEO will depart the distribution company as of March 31, after which time he will focus on an upstart Major League Soccer Next Pro men’s professional soccer team in Cleveland. The team is scheduled to begin league play in 2025. Per today’s news, Gravitas owner Anthem Sports & Entertainment — a multinational media company founded by Leonard Asper — is expected to announce new leadership in the coming months.

He won’t be relocating to Cleveland as he’s already there. In 2019, Gallagher and Gravitas co-owners Michael Murphy and Brendan Gallagher moved the company to the Ohio city in a bid to “further economic momentum for media and entertainment in their hometown,” per the company. Drew Barrymore criticised the Razzies for nominating 12-year-old Firestarter actor Ryan Kiera Armstrong in the Worst Actress category.

The parody awards group, which famously recognises films and performances they feel are the worst of the year, issued a public apology to Armstrong and confirmed her removal from the “final ballot” after her nomination drew intense backlash.

Barrymore was a child actor herself and even starred in the 1984 iteration of Firestarter when she was nine years old.

“I don’t like it,” Barrymore said of the nomination on CBS’s Talk of the Table on Thursday (26 January).

“Because she is younger and it is bullying,” she told host Gayle King. “I’m glad to see people didn’t jump on the ‘let’s make fun of her’ wave and instead said, ‘This isn’t right.’”

The group famous for recognising films and performances they feel are the worst of the year – formally known as The Golden Raspberry Awards – were met with serious criticism for including the Firestarter star in the Worst Actress category.

In a recent statement (via Variety), Razzies founder John Wilson issued a public apology to Armstrong, confirming her removal from the “final ballot”.

He additionally noted: “Having learned from this lesson, we would also like to announce that, from this point forward, we are adopting a Voting Guideline precluding any performer or film-maker under 18 years of age from being considered for our awards.

“We have never intended to bury anyone’s career. It is why our Redeemer Award was created. We all make mistakes, very much us included,” Wilson said.

Awards season is upon us, and while Hollywood is honoring 2022’s best films and performances, the Razzie Awards shine a light on the “worst” movies and actors of the year.

The Golden Raspberry Awards — aka the Razzies — have bestowed Blonde with eight nominations, including worst picture, in their annual picks for the worst films and performances of the year.

In their announcement, Razzie organizers said the movie “‘explores’ the exploitation of Marilyn Monroe…by continuing to exploit her posthumously.” Blonde also landed noms for worst screenplay and worst director for Andrew Dominik, “whose work here says more about him than it does about his subject,” the Razzies said.

Also landing multiple noms are Tom Hanks and Pete Davidson, who are both up for worst actor and worst supporting actor. Hanks was cited for his portrayal of Gepetto in Disney’s Pinocchio and his “latex-laden, ludicrously accented portrayal of Col. Tom Parker in the otherwise critically acclaimed Elvis,” while Davidson was singled out for his voice role in Marmaduke and his cameo in Good Mourning.

If you thought the Razzie Awards learned a lesson last year about bullying, decency and humanity when they graciously rescinded an “award” they’d given to Bruce Willis due to his failing health, you’d be dead wrong. This year’s Golden Raspberry “honorees” include a 12-year-old girl (wait — how is that okay?) in Worst Actress, Ryan Kiera Armstrong (“Firestarter”). Also recognized is movie star Tom Hanks in Worst Actor (“Disney’s Pinocchio”) and Worst Supporting Actor (“Elvis”) — he of course is a two-time Oscar winner for “Philadelphia” (1993) and “Forrest Gump” (1994). The biggest film nominee this year is Netflix’s Marilyn Monroe biopic “Blonde,” which scored a jaw-dropping eight bids including Worst Picture and Worst Supporting Actor x2 for Xavier Samuel and Evan Williams. Luckily, Best Actress Oscar hopeful Ana de Armas was spared.

One of the many reasons schlock horror M3gan become such a surprise critical darling last week was down to Universal’s crafty release strategy, sashaying into the otherwise dead zone of January, easily leaping over an extremely low bar. This week reminds us of what the month usually offers US cinema-goers – an unwanted comedy remake, a horror film for Christians and a Gerard Butler action thriller – junk that’s easy for the studios to dump and even easier for audiences to forget.

Already the subject of social media jabs because of its ridiculous title, the Butler of it all, a film about a plane called Plane, is a January movie through and through, filling empty screens just because they need filling, doing the least but at an aggressively loud volume.

Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to the Australian drama Ocean Boy, starring Luke Hemsworth (Westworld). The Anthem Sports & Entertainment Company plans to release the pic formerly titled Bosch + Rockit in theaters and on demand on February 3, 2023.

The feature directorial debut of Tyler Atkins is set along the Australian coast in late summer and follows the young father Bosch (Hemsworth) as he goes on the run for drug dealing with his surf gang. In tow is his son, Rockit (Rasmus King), who believes he is on a magical holiday. Isabel Lucas and Leeanna Walsman also star.

Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures has snapped up U.S. rights to the drama The Integrity of Joseph Chambers, written and directed by Sundance prize winner Robert Machoian (The Killing of Two Lovers), from Visit Films. Greenwood won for his ‘The Power Of The Dog’ and ‘Spencer’ scores.

Jonny Greenwood won film composer of the year at the 22nd World Soundtrack Awards (Wsa) which took place as the closing event of Film Fest Ghent (October 22) in Belgium.

Greenwood was nominated for his scores on Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog and Pablo Larrain’s Spencer. Other nominees included Daniel Pemberton and Hans Zimmer.

After dropping the epic “Lord of the Rings” television series on Prime Video last month, it’s no surprise the streaming giant is taking it easy this October. They still have plenty of new shows and movies coming out, though none quite on the scale of their journey to Middle Earth.

‘Drive My Car’, ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ among nominees.

The World Soundtrack Awards (Wsa) has unveiled the second and final wave of nominees for its 22nd edition, which takes place on October 22 in Ghent, Belgium.

Composers nominated for the Discovery award include Eiko Ishibashi for Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Oscar-winning Drive My Car and Isobel Waller-Bridge for spy thriller Munich: The Edge Of War.

Also nominated is post-rock electronica band Son Lux, which worked on the score for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

It’s possible that “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) might have somehow been an even bigger box-office sensation had it not been released during a global pandemic, but all things considered, it still did pretty well for itself. Monetary success aside, this is a rousing and thrilling superhero tale that manages to feel self-contained as it compulsorily sets the stage for a whole bunch of upcoming MCU plot twists. The 4K and Blu-ray versions include a smattering of extras, including bloopers, panel discussions with the guest villains, and behind-the-scenes featurettes.

“C’mon C’mon” (Lionsgate): Mike Mills’ disarmingly lovely look at family ties offers Joaquin Phoenix one of the more subdued and humane characters he’s ever played.

Danish filmmaker Simon Lereng Wilmont’s A House Made Of Splinters won the Golden Alexander prize of the international competition of the 24th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, which closed on Sunday, March 20.

With its European premiere at Thessaloniki, Wilmont’s film is gaining attention on the festival circuit, having won the directing award in the World Cinema Documentary section on debut at the online Sundance in January; and also received the Fipresci prize in Thessaloniki.

Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to the public health documentary The End of Medicine, executive produced by two-time Oscar nominee Rooney Mara and Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix, with plans to release it in theaters and on digital and VOD platforms this summer.

The film from BAFTA-winning director Alex Lockwood and writer-producer Keegan Kuhn explores the link between our treatment of animals and emerging health threats such as pandemics and antibiotic resistance. It specifically looks at zoonotic diseases—germs and viruses that spread between human and non-human animals—which threaten the health and lives of the entire human population.

The End of Medicine entered production in October 2019, shortly before Covid-19 began headlines around the world. It features interviews with some of the world’s leading scientists whose research and testimonies conclude that the public health emergency we are presently facing was inevitable and is far from over.

Things stayed pretty much status quo over the box-office weekend as Spider-Man: No Way Home held the number one spot by $3.6 million and the rest of the top ten stayed pretty much the same as last week, save for the departure of one film and two titles flipping positions.

Spider-Man: No Way Home finished the weekend with $11.0 million. This allowed the film to creep closer to surpassing Avatar as the third highest domestic grossing film of all time as No Way Home stands at $735.9 million and Avatar sits at $760.5 million. Second place held steady with Scream pulling in $7.4 million to lift its three-week total to $62.1 million. The animated musical Sing 2 crooned well enough to remain in third place earning $4.8 million and increasing its six-week tally to $134.5 million. Meanwhile, the romance Redeeming Love was locked in at number four this weekend with $1.9 million. The film now lays claim to a two-week total of $6.5 million.

Cinemas from Philly to New York State and Boston shuttered all or part of Sat., rattling but not routing the specialty box office. And a shout-out to theaters in NYC proper where all stayed open – sparse by day but picking up in the evening thanks to “younger people not afraid to trudge in the show,” said one distributor.

As Searchlight buyers find Sundance films for Disney streamer Hulu, Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” will expand to about 1,100 screens this weekend — with 900 of them showing the film in black-and-white.

This version saw strong reactions in multiple showings in Los Angeles and New York, but the color film proved to be a box-office disappointment with $9.7 million in after five weeks in theaters.

The black-and-white screenings included sold-out shows with appearances by del Toro and lead Bradley Cooper. Word of this alternative version was first revealed when the director spoke to IndieWire’s Eric Kohn last month as part of our Awards Spotlight video series.

Del Toro has told the press that he lit his film as if it were black-and-white, like 20th Century Fox’s 1947 original film noir starring Tyrone Power. This presentation, “Nightmare Alley: Visions of Darkness and Light” will play while the color version remains in around 300 theaters.

Romanian animator Anca Damian’s psychedelic, musical take on the Robinson Crusoe’s story, “The Island,” will be accompanied by an Ar exhibition inviting the audience to further explore its colorful universe, Variety has learned. A board-game based on her seventh feature has also been developed, mirroring its protagonists’ search for paradise in the film.

Set to bow at Rotterdam Film Festival, “The Island” was produced by Aparte Film, with Best Friend Forever handling international sales.
