China’s long-term bond yields have fallen below Japan’s for the first time, a momentous economic shift indicative of growing deflationary pressures.
As reported by the Financial Times, this economic trend is raising fears of “Japanification” in China, where authorities face mounting challenges to support yields, with parallels being drawn to Japan’s economic stagnation in the 1990s. These fiscal and monetary shifts are leaving their mark on both nations’ entertainment sectors, where responses to economic pressures are shaping strategies for growth and sustainability.
China’s entertainment industry is navigating an economic slowdown through robust growth in digital media and advertising. As the Financial Times notes, weakening economic data and deflationary risks have pushed domestic investors toward haven assets like government bonds, reflecting broader economic pessimism. Similarly, entertainment players are leaning on digital innovation to remain viable.

Movies are a source of entertainment, yet when you add in the concepts of ‘budget’ and ‘money,’ they are rather a gamble to make. In the last few decades, the cost of making films has ballooned, reaching unimaginable levels, especially in franchises and superhero cinema. Given how movies like Godzilla Minus One, made against a meager budget, can still succeed and go on to win an Oscar, these skyrocketing costs really make one wonder if these films are worth the risk.

After helming one of the best Godzilla films in recent memory, Godzilla Minus One, director Takashi Yamazaki is joining forces with Sony Pictures and Bad Robot for his next project, Grandgear. Yamazaki’s next endeavor became the subject of a heated bidding war, with Sony stomping all over the competition to land the deal. Yamazaki directs Grandgear from his original script, with the Godzilla Minus One creative also producing. J.J. Abrams’s Bad Robot joins the production effort with Glen Zipper.
Takashi Yamazaki shot Godzilla Minus One for a shocking $10-15 million. The compelling and dramatic action film roared in theaters with $113.6M+, making the return amount bigger than some of Godzilla’s Kaiju foes. Studios know Yamazaki can make a blockbuster on a modest budget, and considering how much it costs to make tentpole films nowadays, he could be the studio’s golden goose. Godzilla premiered in November of 1954, eight months to the day after the United States set off its first hydrogen bomb. Indebted to but distinct from pioneering giant monster movies like 1925’s The Lost World, 1933’s King Kong, and 1953’s The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, the seminal Japanese kaiju film is more than just another special effects-driven creature feature. Working from a story by Shigeru Kayama, writer-director Ishirō Honda and co-writer Takeo Murata provide an outlet for post-war Japan’s fears.

Godzilla Minus One was a minor miracle of a movie when it came out last year, a $15 million monster flick that somehow looked as good or better than a lot of Hollywood blockbusters made for 10 times that much. Director Takashi Yamazaki justly earned a ton of praise for his accomplishment, not to mention other career opportunities. "I started receiving all kinds of great [film] offers…I can’t tell you what offers they were," he recently told Cinema Today. "I turned them down, crying tears of blood, because they were making a new Godzilla movie.”
That new Gozilla movie was soft-revealed the other day, with very few details. All we know is that it's being made:
“I’m here to tell you that I can’t announce any more about the new film," Yamazaki said. "I’m really happy to see this excitement. I’m also happy that there are so many children here.

Godzilla Minus One has been well-received by fans for its fresh take on the classic monster, combining horror and emotional depth.
The film’s success, especially as a Japanese production, shows its broad appeal, even in markets dominated by Hollywood. Fans appreciate how it honors Godzilla’s legacy while introducing new ideas, avoiding the common trap of rehashing old material.
It wasn’t surprising when Takashi Yamazaki announced he’s working on a sequel to Godzilla Minus One, and the news was met with excitement. In a recent interview, he revealed he met with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. However, it seems the meeting didn’t lead to Yamazaki joining the MCU. While it would have been a great opportunity for Marvel, it’s unclear if Yamazaki would have been willing to follow Marvel’s creative direction.

Godzilla Minus One is easily a contender for the iconic monster's best movie and the news filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki will return for a sequel has been celebrated by kaiju fans.
During a recent interview - translated from Japanese - Yamazaki confirmed he's met with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like that ended with the director agreeing to make the leap to the MCU.
That's a shame, particularly as we can easily imagine him doing something special with any number of superhero characters. Whether he'd be willing to do things the way Marvel Studios wants them done is another matter, of course.
Here's an excerpt from Vg+'s report:
When asked by announcer Shinsuke Kasai, who appeared on stage wearing a "Operation Kaishin" T-shirt that day, "I heard that Operation Kaishin is popular with foreigners," he admitted, "Yes, they seem to like that kind of down-to-earth fighting style.

More than 40 production staff associated with the Godzilla films throughout the years took to the stage at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
The fest held a Godzilla remastered 4K Digital screening and a day-long “Godzilla Fest” to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the original 1954 film.
88-year old Yoshio Suzuki, who worked as an assistant sculptor on the original film, shared his experiences on a panel alongside Oscar-winner Yamazaki Takashi, writer and director of Godzilla Minus One.
The remastered digital version of Godzilla had its world premiere at the Berlinale earlier this year.
Suzuki first worked on the 1954 Godzilla film as an 18-year old.
“I was a first-year sculpture student at Tama Art University and was looking for work as I was short on cash,” said Suzuki. “My classmate, Yoshio Tsuburaya, told me that his uncle was making a movie called Godzilla and suggested that I try to work on that set.

We have some news that's sure to make kaiju fans very happy indeed.
After bringing the monstrously successful and critically-acclaimed Godzilla Minus One to the screen, Takashi Yamazaki is set to return as writer, director, and VFX supervisor on the next Japanese Godzilla movie.
Toho International (via SFFGazette.com) made the news official, but details are practically non-existent for the time being. We have no idea if this movie will be a direct sequel to Minus One or a brand-new outing for the legendary King of the Monsters.
The ending of Minus One did leave the door open for a follow-up, with a mysterious black mark starting to form on Noriko's neck, and the destroyed (or so we thought) Godzilla beginning to reform in the depths of the ocean.
Minus One went on to become the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla film of all time, taking in over $116 million worldwide on a reported budget of $15 million.

Toho’s Godzilla Minus One was praised by critics as one of the greatest and most affecting kaiju films ever created. So on that end, we have good news: Toho is keeping its director around. Takashi Yamazaki will once again be the head of the next Japanese Godzilla picture, whatever it turns out to be. Toho has not stated this is a Minus One sequel, even though Minus One was not without its sequel baiting moments. The fact that Godzilla might survive, however, isn’t as much sequel bait as it is “well, duh.” He’s Godzilla, he’s got some of the toughest plot armor in show business. We should point out here there are two Godzillas: the Eastern version (owned by Toho) and the Western version (licensed to Legendary and WB). The Godzilla of the East frequently appears by himself, while the Godzilla of the East teams up...

Takashi Yamazaki's Godzilla Minus One was a minor revelation when it arrived in theaters last year. Eschewing expensive and over-drawn special effects, convoluted 'verse building, or bombastic multi-monster pile-ups—i.e., all those things that have made the American Godzilla movies exhausting in recent years—the film instead told a focused,...

A sequel to the Oscar-winning “Godzilla Minus One” has been greenlit and is in the works at Toho International, the Japanese studio announced on Friday, November 1.
Takashi Yamazaki, the writer and director of 2023’s “Godzilla” film, will return to write and direct the follow-up. The “Emergency Announcement” that came through via X said only “further details to follow.”
“Godzilla Minus One,” the Japanese prequel twist on the classic “Godzilla” story, was one of the better “Godzilla” movies in years. The film was a surprise international hit, grossing $115.8 million worldwide and performing even better once it finally hit PVOD and later Netflix.
The film though dealt with some unfortunate timing that limited its box office run stateside, as it opened within several months of Warner Bros. Discovery and Legendary’s own Godzilla film, the “Godzilla vs. Kong” sequel. Toho has a contractual agreement to not open within the same year as a Legendary “Godzilla” production,...

Move over South Korea, there’s a new player in the international arena. Japan’s famously risk-averse broadcasters and studios have woken up to the world outside Japan and are making a bold move on the U.S. and other international markets.
In part inspired by the global success of Korean content, but also aware that their huge domestic market is shrinking as Japan’s population declines, major players such as Toho, Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) and Fuji Television realize they need to find a source of revenue elsewhere in order to grow. And with deep libraries of anime, manga, movies, formats and games, they’ve also realized that they’re sitting on huge reservoirs of valuable IP.
Toho was among the first Japanese studios to make international moves, under forward-thinking president and CEO Hiro Matsuoka, taking back some rights to its Godzilla franchise and getting involved in merchandising in the U.

Beating all odds Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One became the first ever film in the franchise to win an Academy Award. The talented filmmaker not only looked after the direction of the film but also handled the writing and visual effects.
After causing much chaos at the Oscars, fans are now excited for the movie’s sequel which will reportedly be directed by Yamazaki again. However, this time a familiar face should lead the Kaiju film, and it’s none other than Hiroyuki Sanada. Instead of the Westernization of the movie, fans deserve an authentic but talented cast and the Shōgun actor is the perfect choice.

Godzilla fans have reason to roar with excitement, as Toho has greenlit a new movie from Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki.
Godzilla Minus One took a unique approach to the traditional giant lizard tale that created one of 2023’s best films: A prequel to the Godzilla franchise set in the immediate aftermath of World War II, the movie depicts a Japan struggling to get back on its feet as seen through the eyes of Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), a young man paralyzed by grief and trauma following the war (and an adjacent Godzilla attack).
Godzilla Minus One notably won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards: Before becoming a director, Yamazaki got his start working as a VFX supervisor, experience which was undoubtedly essential to keeping the first film’s budget under $15 million while looking as good as any $200 million blockbuster.

Good news, kaiju fans: Godzilla will be stomping back into cinemas soon, courtesy of the director behind last year’s Oscar-winning smash hit, Godzilla Minus One.
Legendary Japanese studio Toho, creator of Godzilla and studio home of Akira Kurosawa, revealed Friday that Takashi Yamazaki has signed on to helm the next film in the long-running franchise. The filmmaker famously wrote, directed and oversaw all of the VFX in Godzilla Minus One, and he’s set to reprise all of those responsibilities on the new title.
Toho posted a video on X of Yamazaki cheerfully announcing the upcoming project.
“Hello everyone, I have wonderful news,” the director says. “I’ll be directing the new Godzilla movie. Please stay tuned.”

On the heels of his triumph with Oscar winner Godzilla Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki is set to write, direct and steer VFX for a new Godzilla film for Toho, the Japanese creator and longtime steward of the franchise, Toho announced on Friday.
The news came as part of an “Emergency Announcement” via X (formerly Twitter). No further details on the project were disclosed, including whether the film will be a direct follow-up to Godzilla Minus One.
A monster hit at a worldwide gross of over $116M, against a relatively lean budget, Godzilla Minus One won Yamazaki the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects earlier this year, besting titles including Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Napoleon and The Creator.
Pic is set in the aftermath of World War II, with Japan already grappling with economic and social devastation before an even more destructive force arrives: Godzilla.

Stomp. Stomp. Stomp. Do you hear that? It’s the unmistakable sound of colossal Godzilla news, wading in from the sea to smash a city to smithereens. Godzilla is stomping its way back to the big screen.
A new “Godzilla” movie, from the director of last year’s Oscar-winning Japanese film “Godzilla Minus One,” has been officially greenlit. Toho, the Japanese entertainment company and creator of Godzilla, made the announcement on Friday.
Takashi Yamazaki, who wrote and directed the surprise hit “Godzilla Minus One,” will return for the new film. He’s once again handling the VFX, after winning the Academy Award for best visual effects in 2023.
“Godzilla Minus One” was Toho 33rd “Godzilla” movie and the 37th to include the famous monster. The Japanese film is unrelated to Hollywood’s recent portrayals of Godzilla in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Monsterverse, which includes King Kong. Set in Japan after World War II, “Godzilla Minus One” starred Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kōichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot who survives an almost fatal encounter with Godzilla and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

They then moved along the 162-meter serpentine walk, stopping for multiple autographs and selfies with fans from far and wide before arriving at the elegant staircase leading into the Tokyo Takarazuka Theater. The theater was built in the style of yesteryear’s grand movie houses, providing the perfect backdrop for TIFF’s Opening Ceremony.

That’s exactly what you got a satisfying amount of in Godzilla Minus One – and now it’s re-released in monochrome as, wait for it, Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color. Do you see what they did there?
The film, if you recall, opened by introducing its human protagonist Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) in the dog days of the second world war,...
