Much of the Dminic Mndawe/Freedom Beast storyline is taken from Grant Morrison's on 'Animal Man', starting with #13. Dmnic received the potion and helmet from his predecessor, Mike Maxwell, "B'wana Beast", who makes a brief appearance here and is mentioned by name.
When Beast Boy is exploring the multiverse via the Red, he hears and sees his animated counterpart from 'Teen Titans Go!'. This episode also connects the CW's The Flash, Stargirl, Doom Patrol and Swamp Thing along with Shazam. And, in a meta reference, Beast Boy encounters comic book writer Grant Morrison.
