The Lumineers have released a cover of the Christmas classic, “Silent Night,” with the aim of raising money for the National Independent Venue Association’s Emergency Relief Fund.
The sweet and simple cover arrives with a poignant music video that details how independent venues have struggled throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, and how many still need federal aid to keep from closing for good. The clip opens with photos of empty venues around the U.S., but closes with far more euphoric and hopeful footage of the Lumineers playing to packed crowds.

It was a down night for most on Thursday night.
ABC's rotation of high drama all took hits vs. their most recent originals.
Station 19 started things off with 5.4 million viewers and a 0.8 rating in the demo.
The Grey's Anatomy spinoff matched its series low.
Grey's Anatomy followed that up with 5.5 million viewers and a 1.1 rating, down from last week's numbers.
Still, the two dramas are still putting up strong numbers.
The same cannot be said for A Million Little Things, which drew 3.5 million viewers and a 0.5 rating.
That marks the drama's lowest total viewer tally on Thursdays, which is not a good result.
The good news is that all three of these dramas soar in delayed viewing, proving they are being watched by a lot of people.
Next week, they will all air their winter finales. Will they get a bump?
Over on CBS, it was all reruns, and another episode Star Trek Discovery,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 4, Episode 12 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired Dec. 9 on Fox.
The unmaskings took a week off, as Wednesday’s episode of Fox’s “The Masked Singer” was instead a special one-hour holiday-themed sing-a-long edition.
The competition returns next week with the Season 4 finale and the presentation of the Golden Mask trophy. But for now, viewers were treated to some of the most memorable performances from this fall — along with lyrics and a bouncing mask, for fans to sing along.
Besides reprises of performances from earlier in the season, the episode also featured new, holiday-themed songs from the show’s three finalists: Sun, Crocodile and Mushroom.
Sun performed “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” while Crocodile sang “Silent Night” and Mushroom did “The Christmas Song.”
Panelists, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Nicole Scherzinger, Robin Thicke and Ken Jeong also got a week off from the guessing game.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! has become the latest late-night show to reenact Love Actually.
In a parody set in Trump’s White House that aired on Tuesday night’s show, host Kimmel played the part of Andrew Lincoln’s Mark and showed up at the front door of the president’s home with posters and a boom box. Playing “Silent Night” as he worked, Kimmel began to show Trump what was written on the posters: “With any luck, by next year you’ll be here,” Kimmel’s signs read. The next sign showed a doctored picture of Trump behind bars.

Legendary has closed a deal for Oscar Isaac to star in and produce superhero saga “The Great Machine.”

Christmas day saw Amitabh Bachchan turn nostalgic. He trekked down memory lane to recall how he used to celebrate the festival during his growing-up years in Allahabad (now known as Prayagraj), and also during his days in Calcutta (Kolkata), a city where he started out in life and holds very close to his heart.
In the early hours of Wednesday, Big B took to his blog to wish a Merry Christmas to fans and also reminisced how he used to celebrate Christmas along with his family and neighbours in Allahabad (Prayagraj) when he was a child.

On this sixth day of the 12 days of Christmas, I need to thank BroadwayWorld, Robert Diamond and Nicole Rosky for asking me to curate this year's edition. I never dreamed it would be so much fun and bring back so many memories of holiday seasons past. Here's an iconic group, The Temptations, singing 'Silent Night.' We had many albums in our home by the legendary Motown group, but this one was definitely played over and over during the holidays. I immediately flash tomy high school and college years when I hear it. Magic.

’90s nostalgia is in full swing, and horror fans are loving it. Many people are revisiting movies they grew up with, while others are discovering those same titles for the first time. And it’s not only cinematic terror that has everyone talking.
Over the past couple of years, the interest in retro books has been on the rise. Combined with ’90s sentimentality, teen horror fiction from the decade has become a special niche for collectors, many of whom are part of Instagram’s enthusiastic community of “bookstagrammers.”
A large portion of the teen horror titles released during the ’90s are now available in e-book format, but the original editions with their colorful covers and witty taglines are the ones we look for while perusing the shelves of used bookstores.
Here at Daily Dead, during a series of seasonal posts, I’m going to be sharing books from my own collection.

Phoebe Bridgers has shared her rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s “7 O’Clock News/Silent Night,” featuring Fiona Apple and The National frontman Matt Berninger.
Like the original 1966 folk track, Bridgers combines the classic Christmas song “Silent Night” with a reading from a typical nightly newscast — only this time, the headlines are pulled straight from 2019, with mentions of the abortion debate, sexting and the Trump White House. Apple harmonizes with Bridgers on the “Silent Night” portions, while Berninger plays the role of “the newscaster.”

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Monday’s fall finale of “Prodigal Son,” titled “Silent Night.”)
“Prodigal Son” ended the first half of its first season Monday with Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne) finally coming face to face with the Junkyard Killer a.k.a. Paul Lazar a.k.a. John Watkins (Michael Raymond-James) before being knocked out and dragged off to what we can only assume is a horrifying experience. And we know that because we spoke with showrunners Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver about where things are headed when the show returns next year.
“When we come back from hiatus, we’ll come back with one of the craziest, most intense episodes with Bright being taken by the Junkyard Killer,” Fedak told us. “As insane as that was, Episode 11 is one of our most insane episodes we’ve done and it’s an incredible panic attack of an episode.

Kacey Musgraves has enlisted a starry lineup for her first holiday special, and the first one to come out under the Amazon Prime Video banner, “The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show,” set to bow on the service Nov. 29. Lana Del Rey, Camila Cabello, Troye Sivan, Zooey Deschanel and Kendell Jenner are among the guest stars just announced for the show, which Musgraves calls “a nostalgic, Wes Anderson-inspired reimagining of the holidays.”
Others lined up include Leon Bridges, Fred Armisen, Dan Levy, the Radio City Hall Rockettes and James Corden. The latter’s late-night co-executive producer, Ben Winston, fills that role on this special, too, along with Emma Conway, Musgraves and her manager, Jason Owen.
The other guests, though, are new to Musgraves’ world, holiday-wise or otherwise. Sivan will debut a new original song with her, “Glittery.” Other fellow carolers will mostly drop in on more familiar standards, like Del Rey...

’90s nostalgia is in full swing and horror fans are loving it.

Raúl de la Fuente’s and Damian Nenow’s adaptation of Ryszard Kapuściński’s “Another Day of Life” isn’t the first film to combine documentary footage with animated reenactments, but it may be the first one that’ll make you wonder when the tutorial mission will begin, and you can finally start playing along for yourself.
“Another Day of Life” dramatizes three months of journalist Kapuściński’s life in Angola, in the midst of a violent Civil War. The streets were literally clogged with dead bodies, and foreign powers worked their insidious influence from the sidelines in an attempt to maintain their power in the region.
Into this “Cold War chess board” arrives Ryszard Kapuściński, a Polish reporter who usually goes by “Ricardo,” who takes it upon himself to tell the world what’s really happening in this chaotic corner of the world. His goal, he decides, is to...

After successfully teaming up for the “New Year, New You” episode of Hulu’s Into the Dark, producer Jason Blum and director Sophia Takal are reteaming to remake the horror classic Black Christmas. A staple of independent cinema for a decade now, Takal’s film follows up on her well-regarded episode and previous directorial outing Always Shine.
An early entry into the ever growing sub-genre of Christmas horror, Bob Clark’s 1974 Black Christmas concerned a group of sorority sisters who are stalked by menacing phone calls and a killer during the Christmas season. Takal’s film will be the second remake, following Glen Morgan’s ill-received 2006 Black Christmas.
Takal’s film stars Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Brittany O’Grady, Lily Donoghue, and Caleb Eberhardt. In addition to directing, Takal also co-wrote the film with film critic April Wolfe.

Barbra Streisand went deep, not shallow, in her song choices for a massive show Sunday night at London’s Hyde Park. As expected, or at least hoped for, the presence of Kris Kristofferson as an opening act on the bill did result in a “Star is Born” flashback, as the duo revived “Lost Inside of You,” a number from the 1976 movie that some fans insist should be an evergreen, too.
Following the obligatory rendition of “Evergreen” — the other song she co-wrote for the film in question — Streisand brought to the stage “one of my favorite leading men… Here’s a song that we sang together in the movie, right? I love this song,” she declared.
Although the song is unremittingly hopeful in its romanticism, there was added bittersweetness now as it began with the line, “Time has come again…” Streisand’s co-writer on the tune, Leon Russell, is no longer around.

The team behind “Noche de Amor” (Night of Love), one of two Argentine comedies featuring in this year’s Canneseries Short Form Competition, has given Variety exclusive early access to the first trailer for the series.
The series follows Vicky, a left-leaning rebellious young woman, and her mother Nora, a conservative mother-hen, who don’t always see eye to eye under the best of circumstances. Nora is thrilled when she learns her youngest daughter is about to be married to Mike, a laid-back Canadian whose Spanish is at best so-so. Each of the series’ seven episodes highlights one keystone day in the lead-up to the wedding, and the back and forth between mother and daughter.
“Noche de Amor” leans heavily on a strong script and the comedic timing of a number of Argentine film and TV stars to deliver a viewing experience easily on-par with other productions with far greater resources.

Dana Katherine Scully is one of the most popular and relevant television characters ever created. Portrayed by Gillian Anderson, Agent Scully was a medical doctor, an FBI agent, a Catholic, and a skeptic. She was smart, funny, and strong. She went on monster hunts, discussed scientific theories, performed autopsies, questioned her faith, and opened herself up to the possibilities even though she was afraid to believe.

[Note: With the film screening as part of this years Horror-On-Sea Film Festival, here's a reposting of our review of the seasonal slasher Once Upon a Time at Christmas]
Christmas horror is one of my favourite sub genres. It of course includes such classics as Gremlins, Black Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night and Krampus. But with a collection like mine, it also includes lesser known or cult classic titles such as P2, Santa’s Slay, Jack Frost and Rare Exports… to name but a few. So I am always on the look out for new holiday horror. Which is the reason I watched Once Upon A Time At Christmas well outside of the usual November/December time frame.
Once Upon A Time At Christmas is, in very basic terms, a slasher movie set at Christmas – which is no bad thing.
