If You Loved Studio Ghibli's Grave of the Fireflies, You Should Watch This War Anime Masterpiece Too

Grave of the Fireflies is Studio Ghiblis soberest story, yet it harbors a dedicated fanbase, and I have just found their watchlists newest addition: Barefoot Gen. Aside from the fantastically-captivating action, romance, and horror genres of anime, the humbling realities of war and international conflict are also tackled in Japanese media. Some series are outwardly aimed towards anti-war or pro-Japanese themes. However, others are more subtle, masking a clear agenda within a fluffy exterior.
For example, my favorite Studio Ghibli film, Howl's Moving Castle, contains inspiration and reflections from both its director and the source material's author. The films release date was in 2004, following the invasion of Iraq by the United States. The film...

At the 27th Academy Awards, Oscar helped Edmond O’Brien win an Oscar.
O’Brien played sleazy show biz publicist Oscar Muldoon in 1954’s “The Barefoot Contessa,” which starred Humphrey Bogart and Ava Gardner. Bogart had been crowned Best Actor of 1951 for “The African Queen,” and had also contended for the same award for 1943’s Best Picture, “Casablanca.” Gardner was coming off of her first and only nomination, for Best Actress in 1953’s “Mogambo.” “The Barefoot Contessa” was written and directed by Academy favorite Joseph L. Mankiewicz, who had won back-to-back Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars for 1949’s “A Letter to Three Wives” and 1950’s Best Picture, “All About Eve.”
”The Barefoot Contessa” didn’t fare quite as well at the Oscars as “Letter” or “Eve.” Neither Bogart or Gardner received nominations, though Bogart was cited for his role in that same year’s Best Picture entry “The Caine Mutiny.

Valerie Bertinelli weighed in on Food Network’s move toward reality competition formats Tuesday, lamenting the fact that the home of her former show “is not about cooking and learning any longer.”
The former Valerie’s Home Kitchen host wrote on Threads that she “fell in love with Food Network two decades ago” because of the educational “in the kitchen shows.” She named several examples: Rachael Ray’s 30 Minute Meals, Ina Garten’s Barefoot Conetessa and Giada De Laurentiis’ Giada at Home.

“The list goes on,” Bertinelli continued, saying, “I learned so much. It’s sad it’s not about cooking and learning any longer. Oh well, that’s just business, folks.”
Bertinelli’s post was a response to a thread from cookbook author Marlynn Schotland, who wrote that she missed “actual shows” on Food Network. “Remember those?” she wrote. “Do you know...

Following the award-winning mobile film “Monsoon Clips”, Diganta Dey decided to continue on the same path with “Bare Foot”, which has already had an extensive festival run, including a distinction in One Earth Awards.
“Bare Foot” review is part of the Submit Your Film Initiative
With the under title “My India” setting the tone of the 2-minute short, the film begins with the sound of a cello playing, while the view from a window is depicted on screen, in black-and-white, and text on screen begins a “story” that starts with “This is my Country”. The film follows the same pattern, with the sound of cello, the images and the under text, in what appears to be a critique of the overall system in India. An image of a broken elevator screen, for example, reads that “the rule of supply and demand suffers” , the image of a camera talks about surveillance,...

Anime isn't a genre. It's a medium, one that's still fighting for mainstream acceptance in the West. Its hold on American audiences is stronger than ever, with Studio Ghibli blockbusters and franchises like "My Hero Academia" earning critical acclaim and global adoration. However, too many people still associate animation with children's viewing. While there are plenty of great anime films that parents can show to their kids, this attitude still leads to confusion. Not only is some anime emphatically not child-safe, but if you dismiss it as kids' stuff, you're missing out on some great movies.
If you've never watched an anime film before, rest assured that it's not all sailor uniforms and jiggly bits, just like how action movies aren't all gravelly-voiced men and sexy ladies. There's something for everyone, although we also confess that you're going to see a lot of Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Oshii here, and for good reasons.

It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. While it was originally planned to be a four-part miniseries, this recut version of 2017’s ill-fated Justice League will in fact be a four-hour movie. But perhaps even four hours won’t be enough for fans who have been waiting years for just such an event.

Sydney, Nov 16 (Ians) Fast bowler Pat Cummins on Monday conceded that the Australia men's cricket team had fallen behind in its recognition and education around racial injustice, adding that they will stand in a circle with bare feet at the start of every international series in solidarity with the anti-racism movement while also celebrating indigenous culture.
"We've decided to do the Barefoot Circle. We're going to look at doing it at the start of each series and it's a pretty easy decision for us. As soon as you try and learn a little bit about it, it just becomes a really easy decision. Not only as a sport, but we as people are absolutely against racism," Cummins said as per ESPNcricinfo.

"My journey across the country is a metaphor - to not give up." 1091 Pictures has released an official trailer for Barefoot: The Mark Baumer Story, a documentary film about climate activist Mark Baumer. This premiered at the Heartland Film Festival last year and won the Best Feature Documentary Award, and also won the "Inspiration Award" from the Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival this year. Barefoot is a portrait of Mark Baumer, a writer and activist who walked barefoot for over 100 days to protest climate change. In a voice the New Yorker praised as "reminiscent of Andy Kaufman", Baumer narrates his walk in self-recorded videos, sharing his offbeat take on life and how we all can make a difference. Baumer was tragically struck and killed by an SUV in Florida during his journey in early 2017. "Mark's story is more relevant than ever," director Julie Sokolow says. Adding: "as wildfires blaze across the West Coast,...

Few singers have played a larger role in defining the sound of country music over the past half-dozen years than Thomas Rhett, the honey-smooth Georgia crooner whose last several records conjure Bruno Mars more than Brooks & Dunn. Rhett has set the parameters of tasteful bro-country (“It Goes Like This,” “T-Shirt”), self-mythologized his own autobiography (“Die a Happy Man,” “Life Changes”), and mastered the art of the country-pop come-on (“Marry Me,” “Make Me Wanna”), resulting in a staggering dozen Number One hits at country radio.

Thomas Rhett looks back fondly on the vehicle that transported him into adulthood in “That Old Truck,” the latest release from his upcoming album Center Point Road. The follow-up to Rhett’s 2017 release Life Changes, Center Point Road will be available May 31st.
A gentle, mostly acoustic number that veers off from the dance-inflected country-pop of Rhett’s current single “Look What God Gave Her,” “That Old Truck” — penned by Rhett with Julian Bunetta, Kamron Kimbro and Ryan Tedder — offers up a series of vivid snapshots from Rhett’s coming of age.

February is here, which means Valentine’s Day is around the corner. Hulu is offering traditional fare (think Kleenex and chocolates) like the Sandra Bullock-led rom-com “While You Were Sleeping,” as well as “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Moonstruck,” and “Barefoot.”
Why stop at romantic relationships though? Celebrate Galentine’s Day, the Feb. 13 “holiday” popularized by “Parks and Recreation,” which honors women and female friendship. Check out the thrilling “Thelma & Louise” or “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” and for campy reality TV fun, watch women fight and make up on “The Real Housewives of New York City.”
Hulu has also brought out a spate of James Bond films, so get yourself a martini and marathon “Dr. No,” “From Russia With Love,” and “Thunderball,” all the way up to “Tomorrow Never Dies.”
Additionally, recent critically acclaimed movies available on the platform this month include the dark comedy western “The Sisters Brothers,...

Moviefone's Top Blu-ray of the Week
"Sorcerer"
What's It About? Roy Scheider co-stars in this thriller about four men from disparate backgrounds who, for various reasons, are forced to hide in a small village in South America. When a nearby oil well explodes, four of them must transport nitroglycerin through dangerous terrain in the hopes of extinguishing the fire.
Why We're In: William Friedkin's film met all sorts of bad luck upon release, from its box office competition (a little film called "Star Wars") to misleading marketing that confused audiences expecting a second helping of "The Exorcist." Although the Blu-ray doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, the quality of the transfer will sate all cinephiles who've been dying to add this cult favorite to their collection.

In the overcrowded pantheon of bad movies, there are interesting failures, prideful and pushy in their aspirations, and there are wispy disappointments that hew so meticulously to formula their creators might have thought they were making soufflés (or cooking meth). With its small, wayward ambitions, director Andrew Fleming’s “Barefoot” lies between those extremes, though it leans toward the latter. The hollow core of this dreadful romantic dramedy is Jay Wheeler (Scott Speedman), the screw-up son of a wealthy Southern clan. Though he seems to have a college degree, Jay works as a custodian at a psychiatric institution in Los Angeles,...

Two very different action pics blast into theaters this weekend: the period epic Pompeii and the tick-tock spy thriller 3 Days to Kill. Despite boasting directors who have proven themselves somewhat reliable box office quantities — Resident Evil’s Paul W.S. Anderson and Charlie’s Angels’ McG — neither will hold a candle to The Lego Movie, which will enjoy a third weekend at the top of the charts.
Tiny animated toys aren’t the only obstacle for the action pics. The new contenders also have to compete with the still-formidable competition of About Last Night and Monuments Men. This weekend’s wild card is RoboCop.

This weekend, the legendary Mount Vesuvius erupts again in "Pompeii," starring Kit Harington ("Game of Thrones"), Kevin Costner stars opposite Amber Heard in the spy-thriller "3 Days to Kill," and several acclaimed independent and foreign films make their way to select theaters.
"Pompeii" stars Kit Harington as Milo, a slave-turned-gladiator, who falls in love with Cassia, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. As Mount Vesuvius erupts and slowly destroys the magnificent Roman province Pompeii, Milo must fight his way to Cassia (Emily Browning) and save them both. Paul W.S. Anderson ("Resident Evil") directs this historical action epic.
In "3 Days to Kill," Kevin Costner plays a dangerous international spy determined to retire and finally spend time with his wife and daughter. "You just love people 'cause you love 'em." Roadside has debuted a trailer for Andrew Fleming's Barefoot, a very quirky romantic comedy starring Evan Rachel Wood and Scott Speedman. As is pretty much the usual, it's about two people at odds who eventually fall in love after being brought together. This time the guy is Speedman, a "black sheep" son of a wealthy family, and the girl is not what I expected - Evan Rachel Wood playing a bit young, a bit kooky, but still quirky, fun and likeable. The cast includes J.K. Simmons, Treat Williams and Kate Burton. This doesn't look that bad, but doesn't look that good either. Have fun. Watch the first official trailer for Andrew Fleming's Barefoot, originally from Yahoo: Synopsis: The "black sheep" son (Scott Speedman) of a wealthy family meets a young psychiatric patient (Evan Rachel Wood) who's been raised in isolation her entire life.

Scott Speedman’s no stranger to playing romance on screen. But Barefoot’s central relationship — between an unlikable man and a mental patient — doesn’t read like your typical romantic comedy.
Yet, that’s what Speedman calls it. Directed by Andrew Fleming, the film stars Speedman as Jay Wheeler, the “black sheep” son of a wealthy family who strikes up an improbable relationship with Daisy, a free-spirited patient at a mental hospital played by Evan Rachel Wood. (Check out the first poster for the film above.)

Just because a bunch of actors and director Rob Marshall have gone into the woods for, er, Into The Woods, that doesn’t stop someone from trying to make a movie called Into The Forest. It’s not a musical but a dystopian future tale, and it’ll star Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood.Patricia Rozema is directing the adaptation of Jean Heglund’s novel, which will find Page and Wood as sisters struggling to survive when society collapses in a near-future scenario. To escape the day-to-day horrors of their Northern California city, the escape into the local woods. Sorry, forest.Page is aboard to produce the film, which doesn’t have a set start date yet. She was seen this year in The East and will show up in 2014 as part of the sprawling ensemble in X-Men: Days Of Future Past. Wood has Charlie Countryman and rom-com A Case Of You...

Making the most of a beautiful afternoon, Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell did some shopping in Los Angeles yesterday (May 28).
The “Wrestler” starlet covered her massive baby bump with a Van Halen t-shirt as she walked hand-in-hand with her husband up the street.
And it sounds like Ms. Wood has been a busy lady as of late, as she’ll appear in a trio of films in the not-too-distant future.
Evan’s movie “The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman” with Shia Labeouf is due out later this year, and she’ll also star in “It Is What It Is” with Sigourney Weaver and “Barefoot” with Scott Speedman.

It’s one of those things, you’ve got to strike while the iron is hot, therefore, Atom Egoyan’s next movie, Queen of the Night, is gearing up fast.
The Killing star Mireille Enos, who came on board Canadian filmmaker’s West Memphris Three drama The Devil’s Knot back in May, is now back for Queen of the Night along with Scott Speedman who also had a role in Egoyan’s 2008 Adoration.
Thesp duo coming aboard to support previously announced Ryan Reynolds who plays a father who discovers a series of disturbing clues eight years after his daughter is abducted, a trail that leads him to believe that the now 17-year-old girl remains alive, and he is determined to find her.

Evan Rachel Wood doesn't have any movies coming out in 2012, but that doesn't mean she hasn't been keeping herself busy. In the past few months she's wrapped production on Fredrik Bond's The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman (with Shia Labeouf, Rupert Grint and Mads Mikkelsen), Andrew Fleming's Barefoot (with J.K. Simmons and Scott Speedman) and Kat Coiro's A Case Of You (with Peter Dinklage and Sam Rockwell). And now she's added yet another title to her future resume. Variety says that Wood is now in talks to star in 18 Wheel Butterfly, an indie road movie which is now set to be directed by Michael Polish. Written by Christian Divine and described as a mix between Thelma and Louise and Smokey and the Bandit, the story is set in 1977 and follows Rainbeaux (Wood), a trucker on the run from the police, bounty hunters, and her fellow truck drivers...

Since last giving Steve Coogan a worthy lead comedic performance in Hamlet 2, we’ve been waiting to learn when we’ll see director Andrew Fleming‘s next feature. He’s just wrapping up production on the indie dramedy Barefoot, with Evan Rachel Wood, Scott Speedman, J.K. Simmons and Treat Williams. Now Variety has news on his follow-up.
They report the helmer has signed on to another comedy, one from Millennium Films. Titled Guys Night and written by Chris Baldi, the film follows ”four guys stuck in dead-end jobs and not-much-better relationships who hear about a mystery island off the coast of New Jersey where anything goes. One night, they set off in search of adventure — but everything that can go wrong does.”

Writer-director Andrew Fleming has had a curious career wherein he's helmed such campy comedies as Dick and Hamlet 2, but also the '90s teen-witch drama The Craft and the cutesy, family-friendly crime-caper Nancy Drew. Simply put, it's hard to anticipate where Fleming's next project may take him. He's just wrapped on the romance dramedy Barefoot, in which Evan Rachel Wood plays a psychiatric patient who falls for her doctor, and now Variety reports Fleming has inked a deal with Millennium Films to helm their upcoming comedy Guys Night. Chris Baldi's spec script for Guys Night was purchased by Millennium last fall. The feature focuses on four guys with jobs that are going nowhere and romantic relationships that are less than enviable. So when they hear about a mystifying island off the New Jersey coastline where anything goes, it seems like the perfect guys night out getaway. Of course,...
