There were no guards inside the Governor's residence. There is no state in the entire United States in which a sitting Governor does not have personal security inside their residence along with other staff. The loss of power to the CCTV ( Closed Circuit Television, a video surveillance system that uses cameras to send signals to a limited number of monitors. ) system in a Governor's residence would be augmented by a backup power supply. The assassination plan pursued in this case would have been rendered impossible by those facts.

Goofs
The Sheriff's Deputy who clear's the Governor's residence after the sound of the gunshot announces the victim's name on the radio.

It is police procedure to not make such announcements over an open frequency, and instead, to allow the investigating detective the chance to establish the victim's identity, especially in the case of high profile victims or for decedents found at the residences of high profile individuals. Doing so, even on encrypted frequencies, will likely draw unwanted media attention and complicate the the process of notifying the next of kin, as well as losing control of the PR process.

In any wrongful death investigation, police will not make any public pronouncement until the next of kin is contacted, and with continuity of state leadership at issue in this case, they will also delay until the Lieutenant Governor is advised.

The succession

After some more awkward "old" (taking place several weeks earlier) scenes including the presentation of John Dutton's murder, this episode settles down to the political maneuverings and crime investigation that follow the governor's death.

Structurally, one is reminded of the recent super-hit "Succession", but that series was built around an amazing amount of original black humor, and a cast of complex, screwy main characters. In "Yellowstone", the death of a patriarch, leaving three adult children dealing with the preservation or elimination of his title empire, has more clear-cut good guys and bad guys, with Jaymie the pitiful weakling.

The Native Americans are poised to contribute in some major way to the final story resolution, but it is left unclear exactly how. My favorite brief scene has Kayce and Mo Brings Plenty gazing out at the Yellowstone landscape and pondering its fate -will it remain pristine or become commercialized? The segment builds to a "surprise" ending, but because I didn't doze off during key moments it was quite obvious to me which character was about to meet their maker.
