I recently stumbled across this series on Netflix, and my 7 and 4 year old love it. While the acting is predictably bad, the "Psycho Squirrel" show within a show is violent, and the writing is poor, my kids loved the show about teenagers who both produce a web based cartoon and have cartoon based super powers.
I generally appreciate shows that include humor specifically for adults, especially when it is cleverly done and goes over kids heads. But this show has gone waaaaaaaay too far. There is a character on the show named "Free Hugs", who is written as a sort of over the top spoof of a sensitive 70's swinger of indeterminate sexual orientation. That however is not the problem. They give this character lines to say that go far beyond what could even be considered marginally appropriate and veers into purely offensive. Two examples: In a show where the Team is searching the school for a girls lost hamster, Free Hugs advises the team "Hamsters are nocturnal, so you should probably look where the sun don't shine."; In another episode, the team is looking for the human skeleton from the biology classroom that has gone missing, upon consulting Free Hugs he says "Well I did see some bones in the boys locker room earlier, you might want to look there". Adolescent humor is one thing. But this show is rated Y7... somehow. Although my children obviously did not pick up on either of these references, they also will not be watching the show anymore. Too bad.
