Of the six main cast members, only Eugene Domingo and Tippy Dos Santos are non-professional singers. Ogie Alcasid, Gary Valenciano, Zsa Zsa Padilla, and Sam Concepcion were all recording artists before venturing into acting. The producers initially wanted to cast singers who can also dance as lead actors in the film.
When producer Tony Gloria watched the Broadway musical "Mamma Mia" in 2002, he conceptualized a local musical movie that would feature popular songs by a popular artist. When Gloria noticed that the songs of Apo Hiking Society were revived by various bands and became hits anew, he felt their songs would be great for a movie as it spans many generations, so he talked to APO member, Jim Paredes and signed them up to a contract.
The contract to use the music of Apo Hiking Society expired twice before the production went full blast early in 2012.
Of the 18 songs used, 'Di Na Natuto' was a major hit for actor Gary Valenciano before 'Apo Hiking Society' recorded it in the 1980s. The song was composed by Apo member 'Danny Javier', and 'Eugene Domingo' performs it in the film.
