For networks hungry to break into the Emmy race, it sometimes takes just one show.
FX did it in 2002 with cop classic “The Shield,” AMC made it in 2007 with the Western miniseries “Broken Trail” and Netflix swung the door open for streaming services in 2013 with the political drama “House of Cards.” From there, those networks became Emmy titans.
“At a time when basic cable wasn’t considered to be of that quality, it was extremely gratifying,” “The Shield” creator Shawn Ryan said of the show’s big first-season nominations (and win– for star Michael Chiklis) 15 years ago. “Not knowing if anyone would take anything on FX seriously, to get that kind of validation was a career-making memory.”
This year, several more networks are looking to make a splash on Emmy night, entering the competition in a big way with big, signature programs that have captured the attention of Television Academy voters.

It's 2017, and so MTV decided to literally mix up their annual awards show.
For the first time, the MTV Movie Awards became the MTV Movie & TV Awards, and categories combined both mediums into one. As movie lovers, we're not quite sure that the two are comparable, though we obviously recognize the rise of quality television.
Not only that, but MTV just became the first awards ceremony to neutralize gender in the acting categories. Instead of splitting up Best Actor and Best Actress, which is typical of all awards shows, the MTV Movie & TV Awards simply had "Best Actor in a Movie" and "Best Actor in a Show", where men and women performances competed against each other. It's worthy to...

Yesterday, the Academy announced one of their long lists, whittling down the Best Animated Feature contenders to just 15 finalists. They went from an initial listing of 145 titles, making this comparatively a very short list. It consists of all of the year’s big contenders, as you’ll see shortly, but it also has relatively few snubs. I’ll get into that momentarily, but that’s a nice change of pace. This is always somewhat of a crapshoot, category wise, so knowing there’s a ton of quality here is never a bad thing at all. Anyway, this is more information to take into account when doing your Oscar predictions. The puzzle is slowly coming together, ladies and gentlemen! Nothing too unexpected was left off this list, though Leonardo Dicaprio and Fisher Stevens’ Before the Flood, Werner Herzog’s Into the Inferno, Ron Howard’s The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years,...

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (Bfca) and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (Btja) have announced the nominees for their inaugural Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards, taking place next month at a first-time gala event in Brooklyn, New York. Ava DuVernay’s “13th,” Ezra Edelman’s “O.J.: Made in America” and Clay Tweel’s “Gleason” lead the pack of nominees, with five nominations each. Other nominees include Kirsten Johnson’s “Cameraperson,” the gob-smacking “Weiner” and recent Netflix features “Amanda Knox” and “Audrie & Daisy.”
“It is an amazing time for documentaries, with the ever-increasing number of platforms enabling producers to reach enthusiastic and growing audiences for non-fiction storytelling,” said Bfca and Btja President Joey Berlin. “This is clearly demonstrated in the depth and quality of our inaugural nominees. We have a wealth of brilliant creators who are bringing to light some of the most entertaining and illuminating stories being told today. The singer, who will be wrapping up her Formation world tour at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Friday, looked like a candy-coated dream in a pink and silver striped skirt complete with a matching butterfly sweater and Gucci hat. Beyoncé's casual outing comes a month after she attended Budweiser's Made in America Festival in Philadelphia with husband Jay Z, and although she's been keeping a low profile, she did celebrate her 35th birthday with a star-studded Soul Train-themed bash in September. The year isn't over yet, but we're already convinced that Beyoncé threw the best birthday party of 2016. The "Formation" singer kicked off celebrations for her 35th year of being an earthbound goddess by attending Budweiser's Made in America Festival in Philadelphia on Sunday, where she spent quality time with former president Bill Clinton and Chance the Rapper. The next day, she made her way back to NYC to host one seriously funky, Soul Train-themed bash with guests like Serena Williams, Usher, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, and Destiny's Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Beyoncé and hubby Jay Z (who was dressed as Jimi Hendrix, by the way) burned up the dance floor, and Usher was kind enough to record the adorable moment when their daughter, 4-year-old Blue Ivy, said, "Happy birthday, mommy!" into the microphone via Snapchat. The festivities reportedly didn't end until 5 a.m.

Sunday marked the 35th birthday of human angel Beyoncé Knowles. To celebrate, the pop star attended Budweiser's Made in America Festival in Philadelphia. At one point, she chatted with former president and potential first gentleman Bill Clinton; at another, Chance the Rapper sang her a sweet birthday song from the stage while she bashfully hid behind Jay Z. Beyoncé of course deserved a little downtime on such a holy day. After all, she's been killing it on the Formation World Tour for months now, and she just recently shut down the MTV VMAs with a showstopping 15-minute performance. For the record, in light of all her professional prowess, it's amazing to see that the "Happy Birthday" song can make her shy.

News can confirm the birthday girl was able to take in the sounds of Chance the Rapper, Coldplay and more artists with close friends Kelly Rowland, La La Anthony and Carmelo Anthony. And yes, Bey's husband was close by too. "They were acting very affectionate and dancing with each other near the stage," an eyewitness shared with E! News. "Jay Z had his arms around her and kissed Beyoncé during the show. He was dancing behind her the whole...

A more conventional music doc than his previous entry into the field, the Jay-z team-up Made in America (2013), Ron Howard's The Beatles: Eight Days a Week supplies a month-by-month account of the band's brief tenure (shockingly short by today's standards) as a live band. Predictably full of great performing footage and incorporating new interviews with the too-few surviving witnesses, the doc may hold few revelations for baby boomers and their kids, who've had ample opportunities to revisit the material. But it will make a fine entry point for younger auds who grew up with

Director Ron Howard is taking his second foray into documentary territory (after 2013’s Made In America) with The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years, and with this news comes the first U.K. teaser trailer.
Over The Beatles‘ rendition of “Twist and Shout,” the teaser gives glimpses of the pressure, hysteria, and joy experienced by four friends from Liverpool who really shook things up with their first world tour. Seeming to combine vintage, beautifully filmic concert footage with standard talking-head interviews, the documentary looks to be a vibrant, if somewhat by the books look into one of the biggest names in music.

The TV event of 2016 so far was surely FX's marvelous miniseries The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, which turned the Trial of the (last) Century into 10 fascinating, funny, tragic hours of drama that shed new light on a case that most of its viewers thought they already knew by heart. Given the phenomenon of The People v. O.J., you would think a five-part, 7.5-hour (10 with commercials) documentary on the same subject would be redundant. Who needs to spend even more time watching a retelling of Simpson's trial for murdering ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman? Instead, Espn's newest 30 for 30 film O.J. Simpson: Made in America(*) proves to not only be better than The People v. O.J. — and among the best things Espn has aired in its history — but a perfect complement to the FX show. Where People v. O.J. was...

Beyoncé and Jay Z showed sweet Pda while on their lavish vacation in Sardinia, Italy, on Saturday. The couple, who is currently overseas to celebrate Beyoncé's 34th birthday, shared a romantic moment by the water, kissing, cuddling, and even appearing to sing to each other. Nearby, their 3-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy, played with Beyoncé's Bff Kelly Rowland, who also brought her husband, Tim Witherspoon, and son, Titan, along for the trip. Beyoncé stunned in a white crop top and printed skirt, and she and Jay swayed back and forth with their arms around each other - even after seven years of marriage, these two are clearly still crazy in love. The couple and their crew headed to the Amalfi Coast last week, just days after Beyoncé hit the stage at the Made in America Festival in Philadelphia over Labor Day weekend. Beyoncé was in great company while celebrating her birthday in Italy this week. The singer, who turned 34 on Sept. 4, was spotted showing off her legs in a zebra-print romper on the Amalfi Coast on Thursday. She was joined by her husband, Jay Z, and their 3-year-old daughter Blue Ivy, as well as her cousin, Angie Beyince. Also along for the fun getaway was Bey's Bff Kelly Rowland, who brought along her husband, Tim Witherspoon, and their baby boy Titan. After enjoying a meal (and a large glass of wine) at La Conca del Sogno in Nerano, the group boarded a small boat that took them across the water to a waiting yacht. It's been a busy month for Beyoncé, who, despite not having any new music out, is still dominating the stage and the covers of fashion magazines. She performed an incredible set at the Made in America Festival over...
