At dawn, the body of 27-year-old Walter Peterson is found in a forest near the guest house. Everyone who attended Walter's birthday party becomes a suspect. Detective Richard Everson gets the chance to return to police work, but will have to work with a young and ambitious investigator Oscar, who wants to make the world a better place. Unexpectedly, it turns out that the uninvited guests also arrived at the guest house at midnight, but all of the witnesses don't want to tell anything about them.

Oscar discovers that Richard hasn't come to work because he's started drinking again, so he continues to investigate the case alone. Rita persuades Oscar to invite his boss Richard to lunch, but the meeting doesn't go as planned. Another "skeleton in the closet" of one of the party members is revealed. Richard and Oscar finally manage to capture one of the uninvited guests.

Richard interrogates Arthur and discovers new information about the uninvited guests. Oscar and Richard go to a small town theater where they talk to Walter's former theater colleagues. New secrets are revealed about the guests of the party.

Richard and Oscar find out who was the mastermind behind the murder. Richard goes to talk to Rita, but the meeting with Oscar's mother turns out differently than planned. Oscar's surprising discovery could help find the answer to the question of who was Walter Peterson's killer.
