A mere glimpse at Maurice Johnson’s social media accounts and it’s clear he’s excited to join Beyond the Gates. Not only is it an opportunity to work with actors like Clifton Davis and Tamara Tunie, but the Atlanta filming location is less than three hours from his hometown of Augusta, Georgia. Apparently, the actor even passed up work in Los Angeles to stick close to home. Here’s more of what you should know about Johnson, who plays Nicole Dupree Richardson’s husband Ted.
His Early Days
Johnson, a native of Augusta, Ga, earned a football scholarship to Albany University, where he graduated with a degree in Speech and Theatre. Interestingly, his time on the college debate team first sparked his passion for acting.
According to Augusta Good News, his debate coach encouraged and challenged him to use his voice. “We won a lot of awards with the debate team,...

“Hacks,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Black Cake” and Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” were among the big winners on Thursday as Humanitas revealed its 2024 Humanitas Prize recipients. The ceremony, held at Avalon Hollywood, revealed honors in nine juried categories, including TV, film and documentary fields.
“We actually got something friends,” “Origin” filmmaker Ava DuVernay said in accepting the award for drama feature — which had been previously snubbed through last year’s Oscars season. “We went through that whole awards gauntlet, and then this popped up in the summer, and I thought, ‘wow, they’re kind of off kilter for the award season!’ Because they don’t care about that… they’re doing something different. This award show that is about doing something with this medium that matters. Yes, entertainment matters, but we have such a powerful voice, such a powerful platform. Act Your Age’s arrival on Netflix was a rousing success, but was that enough to warrant a Season 2?
Act Your Age was conceived as a series akin to the iconic 1980s sitcom The Golden Girls, from which it borrowed its central premise: Three single women in their fifties with contrasting personality types, all living under one roof.
The Bounce TV sitcom starred Yvette Nicole Brown (of Community and Drake & Josh fame) as well as Kym Whitley and Trisha Campbell.

Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels’ comment on Thursday that the media giant has saved $100 million since the strike began is not going over well with the actors and writers who are holding out for a better contract.
“That’s like half of what you spent on ‘The Flash’ movie that nobody saw,” “Mythic Quest” writer, actress and comedian Naomi Ekperigin told TheWrap in front of of Paramount Studios on Thursday.
“That really gets you out of the hole you put yourself into when you made the merger,” she joked.
“Community” star Charley Koontz told TheWrap: “I think it’s interesting that today $100 million, is a lot to them. That’s a great savings for them today. Before, it was a pittance, it’s not worth making anything that [will earn less than] that… But that’s also a fraction of what we’re asking for. So you know, if [Warner Bros. Discovery CEO...

When TV academy voters sit down to fill out their 2023 Emmy nominations ballots, they have to consider 95 shows for Best Comedy Series; this is down by 23 contenders from last year. After six years of there being no restrictions on the amount of entrants they could vote for, each member’s selections can now not exceed the number of eventual nominations in a given category, which, in this case, will be eight.

My Wife and Kids was an immensely popular sitcom in the early 2000s, but what has the cast been doing since the show went off the air? Debuting in 2001, My Wife and Kids told the story of the Kyle family, and the hilarious chaos surrounding their day-to-day suburban lives. The cast was headed up by co-creator Damon Wayans, and throughout its five seasons, My Wife and Kids was a consistent hit. Even if most of the main cast members weren't household names at the time, many of them went on to bigger and better things after the series went off the air.
Besides Wayans, veteran actor Tisha Campbell-Martin brought her years of experience to the project and helped to elevate it above the endless number of other sitcoms that clogged the airwaves at the time. As is the case with most sitcoms, the cast was a strong mix of youth and experience,...

“Act Your Age” earns another win for Alyson Fouse and Bounce TV.
The sitcom starring Kym Whitley, Tisha Campbell, and Yvette Nicole Brown opened to an audience of 2.14 million total viewers with its two-episode back-to-back premiere on March 4 on Bounce TV, according to figures from Nielsen. Thus, making it the most-watched half-hour series launch in Bounce history.
The initial airing was also pushed with a special presentation on Bounce’s sister network, Ion.
“It’s the storytelling. It’s wonderful and I think there needs to be something said about how it really well represents black women in America today. That’s a real breath of fresh air,” said executive producer and David Hudson. “It’s fun, it’s funny, it’s engaging, it’s reflective. I think it has real broad appeal for a lot of women, men as well.”
Hudson adds: “Straight off the bat as we started...

How Tisha Campbell and Yvette Nicole Brown Pushed Kym Whitley to Board Alyson Fouse’s ‘Act Your Age’
Up against a ticking clock, Kym Whitley had to make a quick decision of whether she would join Alyson Fouse’s latest sitcom “Act Your Age.” She was on the fence as the final cast member to round out the trio — that is, until she received a call from her soon-to-be castmates and longtime friends Yvette Nicole Brown and Tisha Campbell.
The “Young & Hungry” alum hilariously recounted the story during the Bounce TV show’s red carpet premiere on Monday night at The London Hotel in West Hollywood.
Around the time of a Jewish holiday weekend some time ago, Whitley said she received a call from her agents asking her to give them a definite answer on Fouse’s offer. There wasn’t much time to consider the request as the show was scheduled to begin production the following week.
