In the scene where Solomon sings "Wish You Were Here", director George A. Johnson didn't tell Aaron Fullan that the photo would come to life because he wanted to capture his genuine reaction. This was also the only song in which the audio was recorded live, rather than in a studio.
The flashback scenes of Mindy and Molly as young children are actual home videos of Sophia and Angelina Amaya with their mother, Colleen (Carol).
Carol is the first movie that the entire Amaya family has appeared in together. Robert plays Christmas Past, Colleen plays Carol, and Sophia and Angelia play her daughters, Mindy and Molly.
The entire movie was filmed in just 12 days.
Because of budget limitations, the actors had to record the vocals for their songs in studios in their own hometowns before arriving to set. This was particularly difficult on songs with duets, but the talented cast pulled it off beautifully.
