Asghar Farhadi wrote the script in Persian and then lived in France for two years in order to better understand the rhythms of the French language so that he would be able to more accurately judge the translation of his script and the performance of his actors.

However, Cotillard dropped out because Farhadi always insists on a rehearsal period with his actors before filming, something she could not commit to due to prior engagements.

Asghar Farhadi took 4 months to shoot the film and insisted on 2 months of rehearsals beforehand.
