In preparation for the role, Sydney Sweeney watched interviews and spoke with the real Reality Winner over Zoom. Sweeney used these conversations to understand Winner's speaking mannerisms which she would mimic. She also trained to increase her muscle mass, in some cases using workouts Winner posted on her Instagram to better represent Winner's job as a yoga trainer and CrossFit instructor.
The anime character who can be glimpsed several times in the film (such as the stickers on Reality's fridge and wall, and the sketches in her notebook) is Princess Nausicaä, the central character in the Studio Ghibli film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984). This is likely intended as a subtle metaphor, as that character is a pacifist who is struggling to end a terrible war, similar to what Reality is trying to accomplish in this film.
